Quick answer
How much do app developers in Melbourne cost?
A Melbourne agency app costs from about A$30,000 to A$300,000 or more, going by October 2026 guides; Codingclave builds iOS and Android apps for A$6,900–A$43,000 at a fixed price. Software Co and Dotsquares put a simple MVP at A$30,000–A$80,000 and a mid-complexity app at A$75,000–A$200,000. Rocket Lab's average is A$100,000–A$300,000, and Clutch's Melbourne listing shows an average project cost of $50,000–$199,999 (currency not stated). Larger builds are quoted case by case; store fees and hosting are extra.
- Why ours is lower: one Flutter or React Native codebase for both platforms, an India cost base and a phase-one scope
- Marketplace or AI features: the upper part, or a separate quote above A$43,000
- Store fees: Apple US$99 a year, Google Play US$25 once
- Hosting, backups, monitoring and support: A$80–A$240 a month
- Website only? Business websites start at A$1,200

Melbourne app development cost by app type
The table adds what the Melbourne guides leave out: where each kind of app sits in our range, beside the published cost and timeline. An MVP (minimum viable product) is the smallest version customers can use; cross-platform means one codebase for iPhone and Android. Suburbs are examples of who might use each app, not client projects. For costs elsewhere, see our national app development page.
| App type (Melbourne example) | Published Melbourne cost | Published timeline | Where it sits in our range | What moves it up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Booking or loyalty app (a salon in South Yarra) | MVP A$30k–70k single platform, A$35k–80k cross-platform (Software Co); simple MVP A$30k–80k (Dotsquares) | 8–14 weeks (Software Co); 6–10 weeks (Dotsquares) | Lower part | Payments, a POS link |
| Customer app on an existing website, or a staff or field app (a trade business in Dandenong) | MVP A$30k–80k (Software Co, Dotsquares) | 6–14 weeks (Dotsquares, Software Co) | Lower to middle | Offline mode, user roles, a new backend |
| Marketplace MVP (a startup in Cremorne or Richmond) or ecommerce companion app | Mid-complexity A$75k–170k (Software Co); A$80k–200k (Dotsquares) | 14–22 weeks (Software Co); 3–5 months (Dotsquares) | Upper part, phase one only | Payouts, reviews, catalogue sync |
| App with AI features | AI app with a custom ML model A$185k–470k+ (Software Co); AI-integrated A$150k–800k+, chatbots A$15k–50k (Dotsquares) | 20–30 weeks (Software Co) | Upper part, or our separately priced AI chatbot as an add-on | Custom models, data pipelines |
| Full consumer or enterprise app | A$170k–330k and A$330k–650k+ (Software Co); A$200k–400k and A$400k–700k+ (Dotsquares); average A$100k–300k (Rocket Lab) | 20–28 weeks consumer, 24+ weeks enterprise (Software Co); 6+ months large (Rocket Lab) | Above our range: quoted case by case | Scale, integrations, compliance |
Why A$6,900 and not A$30,000? Three reasons, and one trade-off. We build iOS and Android from one Flutter or React Native codebase, so you pay for one build rather than two. A team in Lucknow, India, costs less to run than one in Melbourne. And we quote a phase one: the features customers will use every week, not every idea at once. The trade-off: 1.5 hours of live overlap with your working day during daylight saving, and no in-person workshops.
Where we stop. Complex consumer or enterprise apps above A$43,000 are quoted case by case.

Hiring an app developer in Melbourne: hourly rates vs a fixed quote
Melbourne agencies bill by the hour, and the guides stop at the rate. A rate becomes a budget only once you know the hours: 100 hours at Software Co's blended rate is A$11,000–A$16,000. A freelancer costs less per hour, but one person handles design, code, testing and release, so any delay stalls the project.
Against Sydney, Software Co finds Melbourne 5–10% cheaper: blended rates of A$110–A$160 an hour against A$120–A$170. Our Sydney page covers that city.
| Who | Published rate | Source | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melbourne agency | A$110–160/hr blended; A$90–200/hr | Software Co; Dotsquares | Full team, highest hourly cost |
| Senior developer or tech lead | A$140–180/hr senior; A$185–260/hr tech lead or architect | Software Co | Experience, billed by the hour |
| Freelancer | A$75–140/hr; A$60–130/hr | Software Co; Dotsquares | Cheaper per hour; one point of failure |
| Offshore company | US$20–60/hr | Dotsquares | Lower rate; check the hours overlap and contract terms |
| Codingclave | Fixed project price, not hourly | Our price list | Brief us mid-afternoon, progress by morning; evening calls until 12:30am AEDT |
We don't sell hours. You get a fixed scope and AUD price for the whole project before work starts.
Ask every developer about GST. Neither Melbourne website price guide we checked says whether its figures include it. The note under our prices explains how GST works on ours.

What pushes a Melbourne app quote up or down
A handful of choices set most of the number. Where a Melbourne guide publishes a figure, its source is named.
Paid discovery before the price
Software Co runs 1–2 weeks of discovery at A$5,000–A$12,000 before quoting fixed-price work. We scope smaller apps from your brief and a video call. Whoever you choose, ask whether discovery is included or extra.
One cross-platform codebase or two native apps
Flutter or React Native gives you iOS and Android from one codebase. Two native apps mean two builds to pay for and maintain.
Logins, roles and admin
One customer login is cheap. Separate roles for customers, staff and admins, plus dashboards and per-branch reports, add design and testing time.
Taking payments in the app
Dotsquares puts payment gateway integration at A$5,000–A$15,000. Checkout, receipts and refunds add screens, and transaction fees go to the gateway. Which gateway connects is confirmed in writing for your business before you sign.
Connecting to software you already use
Dotsquares prices CRM or ERP integration at A$20,000–A$60,000. A link to your booking, accounting or POS system depends on what that software allows, so each is scoped separately or left for phase two.
AI features
A chatbot that answers from your own content can be added for A$1,950–A$23,500. AI apps with custom models are another bracket: Dotsquares starts them at A$150,000 and Software Co at A$185,000.
A phase-one scope
The cheapest honest saving: launch what customers will use every week, then plan phase two from real use.

Do Melbourne businesses need an app at all? Website, web app or store app
Plenty of Melbourne owners who ask for an app would do better with a fast website and online booking. One question settles most cases: will customers open it every week? If not, a website costs far less.
When a ready-made product beats a custom app
A café may not need a custom app. Our restaurant POS covers tables, kitchen display, menus, modifiers and split bills, and our comparison of restaurant software in Australia sets out the alternatives. A motel can start with our hotel management software. Australian payment, EFTPOS and delivery-app connections are confirmed for your business before you sign.
When a web app is the better build
Portals, booking back-offices and internal tools often work better as a web app: no store review, one version to update. Listing tools for a real estate agency are a common case, as is a student portal for education and migration agents. We price these as custom software and portals.
| Option | Good for | Limits | Our price route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Responsive website with booking | Cafés, trades, clinics | Weaker push notifications; no store listing | Business website |
| Web app or PWA (a website that installs like an app) | Portals, internal tools | No store listing; iOS limits some features | Custom software |
| Store app (iOS and Android) | Loyalty, repeat customers, camera or location features | Store fees and app review | Mobile app |
| AI or no-code prototype | Testing an idea | Not production-ready: security, payments, upkeep | A tool subscription |
| Ready-made product | Restaurants, motels | Fit for your venue to be checked first | Our restaurant POS or hotel software |

What a Melbourne app costs to run in its first year
These costs start after launch; the table shows who you pay for each. One correction: Dotsquares lists the Google Play fee as A$30, but Google's own fee is a one-time US$25.
| Cost | Amount | Paid to | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Developer Program | US$99 a year, shown in local currency at enrolment | Apple | Apple |
| Google Play registration | US$25, one time | Play Console Help | |
| Apple commission on paid apps and in-app purchases | 15% under the Small Business Program (up to US$1 million in prior-year proceeds), else the standard rate | Apple | Apple Small Business Program |
| Hosting, backups, monitoring and support | A$80–A$240 a month | Codingclave (if you take our plan) | Our price list |
| Maintenance budget | 15–25% of build cost a year (market estimate, not our pricing) | Your developer | Software Co; Dotsquares |
| SMS, maps and other APIs | Usage-based | The provider | Listed in your quote |
| Payment gateway fees | Per transaction | The gateway | Your gateway's pricing |
| .com.au domain | A$15–50 a year | Your registrar | Design Mojo; Quazic |
Our quote lists the third-party costs we know about for your build, so you can budget before launch. Google Play also charges a service fee on digital sales; if your app sells digital content, the current rate goes in your quote.

Website design in Melbourne: price for small businesses
Owners pricing an app are often pricing a website too, and app cost guides skip it. Quazic puts a Melbourne brochure site at A$1,000–A$3,000 and an SME site at A$5,000–A$15,000; Design Mojo prices by business type. Neither says whether GST is included.
What A$1,200–A$6,900 buys a Melbourne small business
Custom-designed service pages, a booking or enquiry form, a Google Business Profile link-up and fast mobile pages, usually in 1–3 weeks. A café in Fitzroy needs a menu, bookings and a map; online ordering for cafés is a separate build. A physio or GP practice should read our clinics and allied health page first.
Who owns the domain and hosting
Your .com.au domain and hosting account should sit in your business's name, so you can move the site later. Ask whoever builds it to confirm that before you pay.
WordPress, Shopify or custom for a Melbourne business
WordPress suits a site you'll edit yourself; ours take 1–2 weeks. For selling online, choose Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom store; ours take 2–6 weeks. Prices for both are below.
| Melbourne business | Usually needs | Published Melbourne range | Our route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Café or restaurant | Menu, bookings, map | A$4,500–8,500 (Design Mojo) | Business website |
| Tradie | Services, quote form, reviews | A$3,500–6,500 (Design Mojo) | Business website or WordPress website |
| Clinic or allied health practice | Bookings, practitioner pages | Professional services A$6,000–12,000 (Design Mojo) | Business website |
| Professional practice in the CBD | Credibility pages, enquiry form | SME A$5,000–15,000 (Quazic) | Business website |
| Brochure site | A handful of pages | A$1,000–3,000 (Quazic) | WordPress website |
| Online store (a Footscray retailer) | Catalogue, payments | A$5,000–50,000+ (Quazic); A$8,000–25,000+ (Design Mojo) | Ecommerce store |

Working with an India-based team from Melbourne: hours, ownership and payments
Codingclave was founded in Lucknow, India, in 2017 by Ashish Sharma and is still founder-led. If you're in Melbourne, we work with you remotely over WhatsApp (+91 92771 84741), email and video calls. We have no office, staff or ABN in Australia, so here is how the hours and paperwork work. Our Australia overview covers working with an Indian development team in more depth.
A Melbourne working day with us
Brief us between 3:30pm and 5pm while both sides are at work, take a video call in your evening if needed (we're online until 12:30am AEDT), and find progress waiting next morning. From 5 April the overlap grows to 2.5 hours. We work Saturdays too, at the same hours.
Six things to get in writing from any developer
Onshore or offshore, ask for these before you pay a deposit. With us, each is confirmed in writing before you sign.
- A written fixed scope.
- Milestone payments tied to work you have approved.
- Source code in your own repository.
- Apple and Google developer accounts in your business name.
- IP assignment in the contract.
- A named support period.
When a studio in Melbourne is the better choice
Choose a Melbourne-based studio for in-person workshops, procurement that needs an Australian entity or ABN, government panels, a full-day overlap, or a large consumer or enterprise app. We suit small and mid-sized builds where a fixed price matters more than sharing a room.
| Period | Melbourne time | Live overlap with your 9–5 |
|---|---|---|
| Now to 4 Apr 2027 (AEDT) | 3:30pm–12:30am | 1.5 hours |
| From 5 Apr 2027 (AEST) | 2:30pm–11:30pm | 2.5 hours |
Comparing Melbourne app developers. Directories such as Clutch show verified reviews but say they may earn a fee for some placements, so compare written scopes rather than rankings, ask what is excluded (store fees, hosting, content entry, post-launch fixes) and try similar work that is live.

R&D Tax Incentive and Privacy Act: what Melbourne app buyers should check
Two questions come up in Melbourne app quotes: will the R&D Tax Incentive pay for part of the build, and what does the Privacy Act ask of your app? This is general information, not tax or legal advice.
The R&D Tax Incentive rarely covers a routine app build
For companies with aggregated turnover under A$20 million, the refundable offset is the corporate tax rate plus an 18.5% premium: 43.5% at the 25% base rate. It is meant for experimental work whose outcome can't be known in advance, so routine app builds mostly won't qualify.
Claiming R&D done overseas, by us or anyone else, needs a positive Overseas Finding. The overseas work must be something that can't be done solely in Australia (for example, the expertise or facilities aren't available here), it must support an Australian core R&D activity conducted solely in Australia, and it must cost less than the related Australian R&D. Choosing an overseas developer to save money doesn't meet that test. If you plan to claim, speak to an R&D adviser before choosing any developer. We don't claim our work qualifies.
Privacy Act: the A$3 million exemption and its exceptions
Businesses with annual turnover of A$3 million or less are generally exempt. Health service providers, such as clinics and allied health practices, and businesses trading in personal information, among others, are covered whatever their turnover. NDIS providers should check whether they count as health service providers. If you're covered, design the app around the Australian Privacy Principles from the start.
From 10 December 2026: automated decisions in your privacy policy
Businesses covered by the Privacy Act (APP entities) whose apps use personal information to make, or substantially help make, decisions that could significantly affect someone must describe those kinds of information and decisions in their privacy policy. It is a transparency duty, not a ban; booking and loyalty apps rarely make such decisions.
