Jem's row carries the catch: the clearest package list in the region sits under a site-wide notice that the owner can't take new web projects. That makes Madweb's 'from $800' the lowest figure you can actually order, and it describes Madweb's smallest job, not necessarily yours.

So how much should a small business pay for a website? Enough to cover the drivers its job actually has: a sole trader with their own words and five pages sits near the bottom of any band, a clinic with booking, old pages to redirect and copy to write near the top.

Port Kembla suppliers, clinics near the hospitals, the UOW student market: the site each needs
We have not worked for BlueScope, the health district or the university. This is about the smaller firms that sell to them and their people.
Supplying the steelworks
BlueScope puts its direct Illawarra workforce at around 3,000 and says about 10,000 local jobs depend on it once contractors and suppliers are counted. Fabricators, engineering shops and transport firms in that chain get checked online by procurement staff, so a supplier site needs:
- a page per capability (welding, machining, shutdown work, haulage)
- a downloadable capability statement
- licences and insurances listed and kept current
- a named tender or estimating contact

Near the eight hospitals
Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District employs more than 5,800 full-time-equivalent staff across eight hospitals, and in the 2021 Census hospitals employed more Wollongong residents than any other single industry (5.2%). Nearby allied health and NDIS providers take referrals from GPs, hospital teams and support coordinators, so they need online booking, a quick referral form and screen-reader-friendly pages. Serving the university crowd
UOW counts 35,076 students and 2,586 staff university-wide, with Wollongong its main campus. Cafés, gyms, tutors, landlords and repair shops around Keiraville, Fairy Meadow and North Wollongong serve people searching on a phone between classes: they need mobile-first pages, a Maps embed, hours matching the Business Profile, and ordering or booking where it suits. 16,278 Wollongong businesses: what the ABS count says about who needs which site
Actively trading businesses in the Wollongong LGA numbered 15,470 in June 2023, 15,929 a year later and 16,278 in June 2025, according to the ABS. About 53% (8,642) turn over less than $200,000 a year, which argues for a fixed, modest first build over a large retainer. The next council-level count is due on 18 December 2026.
Construction: 3,185 businesses, the biggest group in the count

Health care and social assistance grew from 1,630 businesses in June 2023 to 1,873 in June 2025, the fastest-rising group for booking and referral sites.

Helensburgh to Gerringong: getting found suburb by suburb, not just as ‘Wollongong’
Search terms often pair a trade with a suburb, and Google weighs how near you are to the searcher. Write a suburb page only when you can say something real about working there; pages that just swap the suburb name are doorway pages. If you work from home and travel to customers, set a service area on your Google Business Profile rather than a misleading address.
Northern suburbs: Helensburgh, Austinmer, Thirroul, Woonona and Corrimal
Searches are short and specific: 'Thirroul electrician', 'Austinmer café', 'Woonona physio'. One northern-suburbs page naming real jobs in Helensburgh or Corrimal usually beats five thin ones.
Central: Fairy Meadow, North Wollongong, Keiraville, the CBD and Figtree
With most providers clustered here, a 'physio Fairy Meadow' search tends to turn on your Business Profile, reviews and a page that loads fast on a phone, so spend there before adding suburb pages.
South: Port Kembla, Warrawong, Dapto, West Dapto, Albion Park, Shellharbour, Kiama and Gerringong
Searches such as 'builder West Dapto' or 'landscaper Albion Park' reward a page naming jobs in those streets. Port Kembla and Warrawong lean industrial, so supplier pages matter more than menus. Shellharbour and Kiama are separate councils with their own searches; a service-area page with real Kiama or Gerringong jobs earns its place.

Web designer, web developer or digital agency: which one the Wollongong search you typed points to
'Web designer', 'web development' and 'digital agency Wollongong' look interchangeable but lead to different jobs and ways of paying. Most owners need a brochure site first; a developer earns the fee once the site has to talk to other software.
