Quick answer

How much does custom software development cost in Melbourne?

Published Melbourne prices run from about $10,000 for a simple first version to AUD 99,000–152,000 for a medium-to-large build, and Microknot's full-software range stretches to A$5,000,000 (checked October 2026). Codingclave sets one fixed AUD figure per defined phase: A$9,800–A$98,000 over 6–16 weeks, or A$4,900–A$35,000 for a custom CRM in 4–8 weeks. Scope decides where a job lands: a single staff workflow sits lower in our band than a customer portal with logins and Xero sync, and a SaaS MVP with subscription billing sits higher again.

  • Our band: A$9,800–A$98,000 across 6–16 weeks
  • Custom CRM: A$4,900–A$35,000 in 4–8 weeks
  • Running costs after launch: A$80–A$240 a month

Custom software development cost in Melbourne: eight sources beside our fixed price (checked 6 Oct 2026)

Most Melbourne software pages answer a price question with a consultation form. Here is what the pages ranking for Melbourne custom software searches print, read on 6 October 2026, with our bands in the last row. App and website prices for the city sit on our Melbourne page.

Where the money goes in one published quote. Only Vrinsoft splits its range by phase: requirements AUD 11,000–16,000, design and architecture 16,500–24,000, core development 55,000–80,000, testing 16,500–24,000, deployment and training 5,500–8,000. The phase minimums add to AUD 104,500, above its quoted AUD 99,000 floor, so treat the range as approximate. Testing gets the same budget as design there; if a quote you receive has no testing line, ask where that work went. National cost tiers by project type are in our Australia-wide guide.

Custom software development companies in Melbourne: where the developers actually sit

RevenueBase, a business-data directory refreshed on 9 September 2026, counts 161 custom software firms headquartered in Melbourne: 81 have 1–10 staff and 142 have 50 or fewer. A head office says nothing about where code is written. Clutch's highest-placed "Melbourne" developers list hourly bands of $25–49 and under $25, rates that usually point to teams outside Australia, and the top organic result for this search when we checked on 6 Oct 2026 describes a "100% Perth-based team".

Five lines that get a Melbourne business a fixed quote

Rough answers are fine. Send these five on WhatsApp:

5 questions to ask

  1. The one job the system must do first. Book a pickup, cost a job, take a referral.
  2. Who uses it, and how many. Office staff, customers, drivers, carers.
  3. What it has to talk to. Xero, MYOB, Shopify, a spreadsheet or a carrier portal.
  4. Any Victorian rule from the table further down. Health records, long service leave or Portable LSL.
  5. Your date, and why. EOFY, peak season, a lease ending.

Send the five lines on WhatsApp and a fixed AUD figure comes back for phase one, listing what it covers and what it leaves out. If the real problem is copying data between apps you already pay for, say so: automating that first can be the cheaper answer.

Shortlisting a Melbourne software developer when every ‘top 10’ list is written by a vendor

Two "best companies" pages ranking here come from firms on them: WTT Solutions ranks itself first of 15, and Jaarvis names only itself. Five checks for choosing a builder instead:

  • Read reviews from projects your size

On Clutch, skip the position and the star average. Read reviews of projects near your budget: what was built, what it cost, how long it took and whether the client came back.

  • Ask who writes the code, and in which country

It shapes your hours, your contract and who picks up the phone. A Melbourne address with an offshore team can still suit you, provided you hear it before signing.

  • Ask for a fixed price for phase one, in writing

Hourly estimates can run on without limit; a fixed figure for a defined first phase moves only through a written change request. If a firm can't fix phase one, ask what it needs to know.

  • Ask who owns the repository from day one

The code should sit in your business's own account from the first commit, not arrive as a zip file at the end. See who owns the code.

  • Custom or off-the-shelf?

If Xero plus a booking app already runs a Dandenong South workshop's jobs without double entry, stay there. Custom earns its cost when the gap in those products is how you win work, or per-seat fees keep climbing. Our build vs SaaS section runs the numbers.

Software developer salary in Melbourne vs paying for one fixed phase

SEEK's salary guides, filtered to Melbourne and based on full-time ranges in job ads, put a software engineer at A$100,000–A$120,000 and a software developer at A$80,000–A$100,000. SEEK notes that some advertised salaries already include super. Where they don't, 12% is added and, under Payday Super, paid every pay run.

One Melbourne hire vs one fixed phase (SEEK salary ranges, accessed 6 Oct 2026)

Super figures are 12% of SEEK's medians, where the advertised salary excludes it; leave, equipment, recruiting and payroll tax are left out. Our judgement: hiring wins once you can see a year or more of steady product work. Before that, a fixed phase one tests the idea for less than a year of one developer's pay and super at SEEK's median. The 3- and 5-year version, with SaaS beside it, is in our build, buy or hire maths.

What Melbourne businesses commission, from Truganina warehouses to Cremorne start-ups

The Port of Melbourne calls itself "Australasia's largest maritime hub for containerised, automotive and general cargo", and the freight sheds feeding it fill the western and south-eastern suburbs. Factories cluster in the north and south-east, health precincts in Parkville, Box Hill and Heidelberg, start-ups around Cremorne, Richmond and Collingwood. Suburbs are examples of where each business type operates, not our clients.

Victorian rules a custom system may have to handle (general information, not legal advice)

The ranking pages we read on 6 Oct 2026 don't explain the Victorian rules below, yet they often decide what a Melbourne system must record, restrict or export. Confirm your obligations with an adviser.

Victorian and federal rules that shape a Melbourne software spec
RuleWho it reachesWhat the software should doSource
Health Records Act 2001 (Vic) and its Health Privacy PrinciplesAny organisation handling health information in Victoria, including disability and aged-care information and employers' staff records. Privacy Act 1988 (Cth)Businesses with turnover above A$3 million, plus every health service provider whatever its turnoverSee the notes on our Melbourne pageoaic.gov.au
Long Service Leave Act 2018 (Vic)Most workers, casuals included, after 7 years' continuous employment with one employerAccrue 1 week per 60 weeks from a stored continuous-service start date; keep it when the business is soldvic.gov.au
Portable Long Service Benefits SchemeEmployers in community services, contract cleaning and securityRecord each worker's service and export the quarterly return (the employer registers first)plsa.vic.gov.au
Payday Super, from 1 July 2026All employers12% of qualifying earnings, in the fund within 7 business days and reported through STP; feed payroll, don't rebuild itato.gov.au

Integrate with payroll; don't build it. Send hours from the rostering or job system to STP-enabled payroll such as Xero or MYOB, which already carries the tax and super rules. An LSL report on that data is a sensible custom feature.

Health records belong in the spec. Before the first screen is designed, decide which fields hold health information, which roles can open them, how long access logs are kept and where the production database lives. HPP 9 limits when health information may leave Victoria, which matters with any developer outside the state, us included.

Got one of these rules to handle? Send it on WhatsApp and phase one gets quoted with it in the spec.

Replacing a spreadsheet or an old system while the business keeps running

Microknot and Vrinsoft both list legacy modernisation without explaining how the switch avoids a lost week of trading. Our order:

  • Export and map the old data first

Before any screen is designed, everything comes out of the spreadsheet, Access file or old database and each column is mapped, with duplicates and blanks listed for your team to settle.

  • Run both systems for one cycle

Staff keep the old system while the new one runs beside it for one natural cycle, such as a month of invoicing or one roster period, then outputs are compared line by line.

  • Switch one team at a time

The office moves first, then drivers or the floor, so a problem touches one group. The old system stays open read-only until someone on your side signs off the reconciliation.

  • Taking over another developer’s code

If someone else built what you have, an audit of the code, hosting and data comes first. It is scoped as part of phase one, included in its fixed quote, and tells you whether to fix, extend or replace.

How a software milestone runs on Melbourne time (AEDT now, AEST from 4 April 2027)

During daylight saving our Monday-to-Saturday day runs 3:30pm to 12:30am in Melbourne: decisions early, releases late. Hours by season are on our Melbourne page.

  • Release after your team logs off

Changes go live in your evening, up to 12:30am AEDT, so nobody is entering orders or bookings mid-change. A backup comes first, and the previous version stays ready to restore.

  • Test on staging the next morning

Your team opens the staging link, tries the change with real cases and replies on WhatsApp. Notes sent before 3:30pm are waiting when we start.

  • Freeze changes around your busy dates

Name the weeks when nothing should move, such as the run-up to 30 June for invoice or payroll exports, or a retail peak, and releases are scheduled around them.

  • Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo

Regional Victoria keeps Melbourne's clock, so the cycle is identical for Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo.

How much does it cost to develop custom software in 2026?

In Melbourne, published figures run from about $10,000 for a simple first version (WTT Solutions, currency not stated) through an A$20,000 MVP at Microknot to AUD 99,000–152,000 for a medium-to-large Vrinsoft project, with Microknot's full-software range reaching A$5 million. Codingclave quotes one fixed AUD price per defined phase: A$9,800–A$98,000 over 6–16 weeks, or A$4,900–A$35,000 for a custom CRM. Market ranges by project type across Australia are on our national custom software page.

What hourly rate do Melbourne software developers charge?

Few Melbourne-ranking firms publish one. Vrinsoft lists AUD 55–80 an hour; WTT Solutions quotes $25–$149 and Clutch's top Melbourne listings show $25–49 or under $25, neither naming a currency. The lower bands usually belong to teams outside Australia. We don't bill by the hour: you get one fixed AUD price for a written phase, from A$9,800.

Who are the top custom software developers in Melbourne?

No neutral ranking exists. The two "best companies" lists ranking here are written by firms that put themselves first, and Clutch says it may earn a fee for some placements. "Top IT companies" lists also mix managed-IT providers with software builders. RevenueBase counts 161 Melbourne-headquartered custom software firms, half with 10 staff or fewer. Shortlist three or four from Clutch reviews of projects near your budget, then ask each who writes the code and where. We rank nobody, ourselves included.

Is it cheaper to hire a software developer in Melbourne or pay for a fixed-price build?

For one defined system, a fixed build usually costs less. SEEK puts Melbourne software developers at a median A$90,000 and engineers at A$110,000. Where the advertised salary excludes super, 12% adds about A$10,800 or A$13,200, now paid every payday, before leave, equipment and recruiting. Phase one with us is A$9,800–A$98,000, one fixed price for the phase. Hiring makes more sense when you can see a year or more of continuous product work for that person.

How long does custom software development take for a Melbourne business?

Published Melbourne timelines vary widely. Designpluz says an MVP typically takes 4–12 weeks and most projects 3–12 months; WTT Solutions gives 3–4 months for simple mobile apps and 9–12 months for enterprise systems. Our fixed phases usually run 6–16 weeks, and a custom CRM 4–8 weeks, including a lean start-up MVP. Schedules most often slip outside the code: approvals left for a fortnight, or old data needing a clean.

Can a Melbourne business use a software developer based interstate or overseas?

Yes, though where a firm's developers sit is often unclear. Clutch's highest-placed Melbourne developers list hourly bands that usually signal a team outside Australia, and the top organic result for this search when we checked on 6 Oct 2026 describes a 100% Perth-based team. Codingclave's developers are in Lucknow, India, with 1.5 hours of live overlap during AEDT. With anyone, get IP assignment, the payment schedule and the hosting region in writing before signing.

Can you connect custom software to Xero or MYOB?

Yes. Both publish APIs, so a portal, job system or CRM can pass invoices, contacts and payments across instead of someone retyping them. MYOB documents its Business API on its developer centre (developer.myob.com), and Xero runs a developer platform too. Which records sync, how often and any API access costs are scoped per project and confirmed in writing for your business before you sign. Our Xero and MYOB integration page covers the detail.

Does software for a Victorian clinic, NDIS or aged-care provider have to meet the Health Records Act 2001?

Yes, where it holds health information collected or handled in Victoria. The Health Privacy Principles reach private and public organisations, cover disability and aged-care information, and have no small-business exemption. In a spec that means only the fields needed, role-based access, a way for people to see and correct their record, an access log, and hosting that respects HPP 9. General information, not legal advice.
