Overview

We're a founder-led team in India, so the lower price comes from our costs, not from skipping payments, shipping, GST or returns set-up. Below: published agency prices beside ours, and the running costs most quotes leave out.

Quick answer

How much does an ecommerce website cost in Australia?

Australian agencies publish about $3,000–$5,000 for Shopify theme work, $5,000–$15,000+ for a full custom Shopify store, and $15,000–$35,000 for a small-store redesign that bundles strategy and content. Codingclave builds Shopify, WooCommerce and custom stores for A$2,400–A$19,500 in 2–6 weeks, fixed in writing. Running costs are extra: Shopify Basic is A$56 a month (A$42 billed yearly) plus 1.7% + 30c per domestic card order on Shopify Payments.

  • Year one = build + plan + payment fees + paid apps + support
  • On A$20,000 a month in sales, Shopify Basic plan and card fees are about A$456 a month
  • Afterpay and Zip cost roughly three times a card payment
  • On Shopify Basic, any non-Shopify Payments gateway adds 2%
  • Our prices are in AUD before GST; see the note under the price cards

What an online store costs to build in Australia, by build type

One quote says A$5,000 and another A$35,000 because they describe different jobs. What moves the price most:

  • Products: 40 items, or 2,000 SKUs across sizes and colours.
  • Design: a customised theme, or a custom design with revision rounds.
  • Integrations: stock and order sync with Xero, MYOB or Cin7.
  • Migration: products, customers and redirects from Wix, Squarespace, Etsy or an old store.
  • Product data: who writes descriptions and loads every SKU.
  • Payments and carriers: each gateway, Afterpay or Zip option and live rate needs testing.

Shopify vs WooCommerce vs custom: which suits an Australian store

For most new Australian stores without an existing WordPress site, Shopify is the simpler start: hosting, security and checkout are included in the monthly fee. WooCommerce is the better fit if you already run WordPress, publish a lot of content, or want to own the hosting and code outright. Custom suits pricing or ordering rules that neither handles well.

  • When Shopify wins

You want to launch fast with a standard catalogue and never think about hosting or security patches. The trade-off is rent: plan and app fees monthly, plus the third-party fee on orders not paid through Shopify Payments. Shopify's help centre says Stripe can't be added as a separate gateway where Shopify Payments is supported, Australia included.

  • When WooCommerce wins

You already run WordPress, want articles and shop in one site, or want to move hosts freely. After launch, WordPress, WooCommerce and plugin updates fall to you or a support plan.

  • WooCommerce hosting in Australia

Managed WooCommerce hosting usually covers server updates, caching, daily backups, a staging copy and SSL. An Australian data centre keeps pages quicker for Australian shoppers than a server overseas; ask any host how checkout copes during a sale. Your host and region are set out in the written scope.

  • When custom Next.js/Node or Laravel wins

Per-customer trade pricing, quote-to-order, product configurators or multiple sellers. Headless ecommerce means the shop front is a separate app, often Next.js, while products, cart and orders stay in a platform such as Shopify: more design freedom, but a second codebase to maintain. Portals and B2B ordering: custom software development. Companion apps: mobile app development. Selling meals? See restaurant online ordering.

  • Is Shopify still worth it in 2026?

For most small Australian stores, yes: A$56 a month (A$42 billed yearly) covers hosting, checkout and security. If paid apps plus third-party fees on Afterpay and Zip pass the cost of running WooCommerce, compare platforms before you renew.

How much an ecommerce website costs per month in Australia

Build quotes rarely show running costs: the plan, payment fees, paid apps and support. Shopify's Australian plans:

  • What a third-party transaction fee is

A percentage Shopify adds on top of the provider's own fee when an order isn't paid through Shopify Payments. Shopify's help centre says it applies to all third-party and alternate gateways, even with Shopify Payments switched on. WooCommerce and custom stores have none.

  • Ecommerce website maintenance cost

Our hosting-support plan is A$80–A$240 a month for updates, backups, monitoring, fixes and small changes, in our working hours Monday to Saturday, with no 24/7 cover. For comparison, Confetti Design publishes Shopify retainers of $150–$500 a month, and 23 Digital's 'Grow' retainer starts from $2,500 a month.

  • Costs quotes often leave out

Monthly apps, a premium theme licence, photography and copy, migration and SKU import, domain and email, chargeback fees, and buy-now-pay-later fees that may not come back on refunds. On Shopify Basic at A$20,000 a month, plan and card fees alone are about A$5,470 a year.

Worked example: fees on A$20,000 a month in online sales

One store: A$20,000 a month from 200 orders at A$100, all on Australian cards unless stated. Every figure comes from the providers' published Australian rates; plug in your own sales and order count.

Monthly fees on A$20,000 in sales (200 orders × A$100). Published rates checked October 2026; a worked calculation, not a client's store.

The formula: (sales × card %) + (orders × A$0.30) + plan fee. On Shopify, add (sales through other gateways × 2%, 1% or 0.6%) for anything not paid through Shopify Payments.

When to change plan: Grow costs A$93 more a month than Basic and saves 0.15% per sale, so it pays off above about A$62,000 a month (about A$48,000 on yearly billing). Advanced beats Grow above about A$213,000 a month (about A$158,500 yearly).

The lesson: Keep Shopify cards on Shopify Payments; a third-party card gateway nearly doubles the fees here.

Payments in Australia: cards, PayPal, Afterpay, Zip and PayTo

Is Shopify Payments available in Australia? Yes, at the rates above, and on Shopify it's the only card gateway without the third-party fee. Most stores also add PayPal or buy now, pay later (BNPL) providers such as Afterpay and Zip, each with its own fee:

  • Buy now, pay later: conversion against cost

Afterpay and Zip can lift conversion but cost about three times a card. On an A$100 order: Zip on Stripe A$5.79, Afterpay on WooPayments A$6.30, a Stripe card A$1.95. Afterpay doesn't publish merchant rates; CreditorWatch and other Australian sources report about 4–6% + A$0.30, not returned on refunds, so check your agreement before writing your refund policy.

  • Which gateways we set up for you

Which gateways and buy-now-pay-later providers we integrate on your store is confirmed in writing for your business before you sign. Unsure how the third-party fee changes your Afterpay maths? Ask on WhatsApp and we'll work it through.

Shipping with Australia Post and StarTrack now Sendle has closed

Postage is the last cost a shopper sees before paying, so shipping settings are worth getting right before launch. Shopify connects carriers through apps, WooCommerce through plugins, and a custom store through carrier APIs. Your rates come from your own carrier account.

  • Sendle has shut down

Shopify's help centre states that Sendle ceased shipping operations on 11 January 2026 and is no longer a Shopify-supported label carrier in Australia. If your store still uses its app, shows its rates or names it in your shipping policy, switch to Australia Post, StarTrack or a multi-carrier app and update the policy wording.

  • Live rates or flat zones

Live rates need a correct weight on every product. Flat zones are simpler and let you price remote WA, NT and far north Queensland separately. Start with zones; move to live rates once product data is clean.

  • Free-shipping threshold maths

A threshold pays for itself when (threshold − average order) × gross margin % ≥ average postage you absorb. Example: average order A$80, 40% margin, threshold A$110. Each customer who tops up adds (110 − 80) × 40% = A$12 of margin, so it works if your average postage is A$12 or less. Use your own carrier figure and recheck after a month.

GST on online sales: when to register and how the store is set up

Do I need to charge GST on my online store? Once you're registered, yes, on taxable sales. This isn't tax advice: your accountant decides timing and GST-free items; we handle the store settings.

  • When you must register

When GST turnover reaches A$75,000 (A$150,000 for non-profits) over the current and previous 11 months, or projected over the current and next 11. Register within 21 days of crossing it.

  • 10% GST in the store’s tax settings

GST is 10% on most goods. We set the store rate to 10%, flag GST-free items your accountant names, and test totals with shipping and discounts.

  • GST-inclusive prices and tax-invoice-ready emails

Product pages, cart and checkout show GST-inclusive prices, so the total doesn't jump at the last step. Order emails carry your business name, ABN and GST amount for buyers who need a tax invoice.

Australian Consumer Law returns, built into your store

Do I have to offer refunds on online orders in Australia? For change of mind, no; if you offer it, set the conditions out on your returns page. For goods that are faulty or not as described, yes, and no wording on your site can remove that right. Returns pages and a request flow are included in every store build.

  • Consumer guarantees can’t be excluded

Goods must be safe, durable, free of defects, match their description and be fit for purpose. If they fail, the customer is entitled to a repair, replacement or refund, sale items included.

  • What we set up, and what we don’t

A returns-policy page, a returns request form linked from the order email, and matching product-page and checkout wording, sale pages included. We don't give legal advice; have a lawyer review your policy.

Hiring Shopify or WooCommerce developers in Australia: your options

Can I hire someone to build me a Shopify store? Yes, through a directory, a marketplace or an agency. Search for Shopify developers in Australia and you'll see all three. An hourly rate isn't a store price, so ask everyone on your shortlist for a fixed scope covering payments, shipping, GST and returns.

When someone else is the better choice

You're on Shopify Plus (from A$3,700 a month) and want a Plus partner; you need in-person workshops or warehouse visits; you've chosen BigCommerce or Adobe Commerce; or you need one small theme tweak, which a freelancer will do for less. Testing an idea with five products? A DIY store builder may be enough.

How it works

How a store build runs, and how long it takes

Confetti Design estimates six to ten weeks for a Shopify build from a completed brief. Our quoted range is 2–6 weeks once your product list and photos are ready. These are ranges, not a guarantee: product data and approvals decide where yours lands.

Start on WhatsApp
  1. Send your product list and a short brief

On WhatsApp (free from Australia), by email or through the form on this page: your product list (a spreadsheet is fine), preferred platform or 'not sure', and launch date.

  2. Written scope and fixed AUD quote

Platform, SKU count, gateways and BNPL, carriers, integrations, code ownership, accounts in your name, exclusions and the payment schedule.

  3. Design and catalogue set-up

Theme or custom design, then products, variants and collections. Product data and photography are the usual delay; start gathering them on day one.

  4. Payments, shipping, GST and returns

Gateways and BNPL, carrier rates or zones, GST settings and order emails, and the returns page and flow.

  5. Evening review and test orders

A walkthrough in your afternoon or evening, then test orders on mobile and desktop: a card payment, a BNPL payment, a refund, a shipping label and a GST total check.

  6. Launch and handover

Domain, redirects from any old store and analytics go live on a day we're working. Logins go to you directly, on accounts in your business name.

  7. Optional support plan

Stay on hosting-support at A$80–A$240 a month (working hours, no 24/7 cover), or run the store yourself. For traffic after launch, read our guide to digital marketing and SEO in Australia.

How much does an ecommerce website cost per month in Australia?

Add the plan, payment fees, paid apps and support. A Shopify Basic store selling A$20,000 a month (200 orders at A$100) pays about A$456: A$56 for the plan and A$400 in Shopify Payments fees, or about A$442 on yearly billing. A WooCommerce store on Stripe pays about A$390 in card fees plus hosting. Our support plan is A$80–A$240 a month.

Shopify vs WooCommerce: which is better for an Australian store?

Shopify suits most new stores without an existing WordPress site: A$56 a month on Basic covers hosting, security and checkout, and domestic cards cost 1.7% + 30c on Shopify Payments. WooCommerce suits you if you already run WordPress or want to own your hosting and code; the plugin is free, Stripe cards cost 1.65% + A$0.30, and you pay for hosting and updates instead.

What are WooCommerce fees in Australia?

The WooCommerce plugin is free. WooPayments has no monthly fee and charges 1.75% + 30c per domestic card payment, plus 1.5% for international cards and 2% for currency conversion. 10% GST is added to those fees unless you give a valid GST ID. Disputes cost $25, refunded if you win. Afterpay through WooPayments is 6% + 30c. Hosting and any paid extensions are extra.

Does Shopify have Afterpay and Zip in Australia?

Yes, both offer Shopify integrations you install as separate payment providers. Afterpay doesn't publish merchant rates; Australian sources report about 4–6% + A$0.30. Because neither runs through Shopify Payments, Shopify's help centre says its third-party fee applies: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced. Which providers we set up for your store is confirmed in writing before you sign.

Does Sendle still work with Shopify?

No. Shopify's help centre says Sendle ceased shipping operations on 11 January 2026 and is no longer a Shopify-supported carrier for buying labels in Australia. Stores that relied on it need another carrier, such as Australia Post (MyPost Business or eParcel), StarTrack or a multi-carrier app, and updated shipping-policy wording. WooCommerce stores using a Sendle plugin need the same change.

Do I need to charge GST on my online store?

Once you're registered, yes, on taxable sales. You must register within 21 days of GST turnover reaching A$75,000 (A$150,000 for non-profits), measured over the current and previous 11 months or projected over the next 11. GST is 10% on most goods. We configure the store's tax settings; your accountant decides which items are GST-free.

Do I have to offer refunds on online orders in Australia?

Not for change of mind; that's optional. But the Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply to every sale, sale items included. If goods are faulty, don't match their description or aren't fit for purpose, the customer is entitled to a repair, replacement or refund, whatever your policy says. 'No refunds on sale items' wording isn't allowed.

How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer in Australia?

It depends whether you pay by the hour or for the whole store. Directories such as Clutch list agencies by hourly rate and minimum project size. Australian agencies publish about $3,000–$5,000 for theme work and $5,000–$15,000+ for a full custom Shopify store. Our builds are A$2,400–A$19,500, fixed in writing. Send your product list on WhatsApp for a quote.
