Quick answer

How much does SEO typically cost in Melbourne?

In October 2026, published Melbourne SEO prices ran from A$800 a month for one-suburb work to A$15,000 at the top of First Page's Melbourne range. A standard small business sits at A$1,500–A$3,500 and a competitive sector at A$3,000–A$6,000 (whatsthedamage, last verified October 2026). Codingclave's runs from A$990 to A$9,800 a month, set after a free look at your site.

How much do SEO agencies charge in Melbourne? Every printed figure, October 2026

Here is every price we could find in print, side by side with ours. First Page (Richmond) quotes market ranges in its FAQ; StudioHawk, Impressive and SIXGUN print no figure on their service pages. What is the average cost? Nobody publishes a measured Melbourne average; where you land depends on how many suburbs you need and how crowded your trade's searches are.

Read each Semrush figure as a floor: "from A$1,000" doesn't say what that A$1,000 buys, so ask for the monthly deliverables before comparing. Melbourne SEO cost by area: A$1,500–A$2,500 in the CBD, A$800–A$1,400 in growth corridors

How much does local SEO cost? In Melbourne it moves with where your customers search from. whatsthedamage is the only publisher we found that splits the city by area. The example suburbs below are the guide's own; the competition notes and the last column are ours.

Greater Melbourne reached 5,435,590 residents at June 2025 after adding 105,030 in 2024–25, more than any other capital (ABS). The fastest-growing areas sit on the west, north and south-east edges: Rockbank–Mount Cottrell (+4,602), Mickleham–Yuroke (+4,145), Fraser Rise–Plumpton (+4,064) and Clyde North–South (+3,771). Before settling on a budget, look at the sites you'd actually compete against in your suburb.

Looking for affordable SEO in Melbourne? A$800 is the lowest band in the one independent Melbourne cost guide; StudioHawk's national guide starts entry work at A$500, and one Semrush card shows Creative Fosters at A$0–A$2,500. Below A$800, ask for the deliverables list first.

Lock-in and guarantees: what Melbourne’s ranking SEO pages actually say

Do Melbourne SEO agencies lock you into a contract? Their pages mostly don't say. On 7 October 2026 StudioHawk was the only one with a lock-in stance, saying it prides itself on not locking clients into contracts. First Page offers to beat your current results or waive its fee, subject to conditions and exclusions in separate terms of business.

  • How many days’ notice ends the retainer, and what happens to a set-up fee?

Ask for the notice in days, whether the final month is billed in full, and whether any set-up fee comes back if you leave early. With us, the notice period and any set-up fee are set in writing before you sign.

  • Whose name are Search Console, GA4 and the Business Profile in, and who owns the written pages?

They should be yours, with the agency added as a user; accounts opened under an agency's login can be slow to recover. Ask who owns the copy and images written for your site too. Content ownership is confirmed in writing for your business before you sign.

  • Do you also work for a competitor in my suburb and trade?

Two Brunswick physios want the same map spots. Get the policy in writing. AEK Media gives its conflicts policy a section of its own, a fair benchmark to ask other agencies for.

  • If I leave, do the pages, links and redirects stay live on my site?

Pages, redirects and fixes made on your own site should stay when the invoices stop. Links on sites the agency controls can vanish when you leave. The work we do sits on your site and in your accounts.

Getting your business into Melbourne’s Google Maps results (and why your agency’s office doesn’t matter)

Your pin ranks on your own address, Business Profile and reviews, not on where your agency sits. Google's local ranking help says local results rest mainly on relevance, distance and popularity, which takes in links and review counts, and that there's no way to request or pay for a better local position.

On 6 October 2026 the three map results for "seo agency melbourne" were SIXGUN (5.0 from 106 reviews, Richmond), eMarket Experts (4.9 from 115, Melbourne) and Supple Digital (4.9 from 363, Richmond). First Page (Richmond), Impressive (Cremorne) and StudioHawk (Prahran) rank in the organic results from the same inner-south-east cluster.

Codingclave has no Melbourne premises. We won't fake a Melbourne address for ourselves, and we'll never ask you to fake one either: Google's profile guidelines rule out a rented mailing address the business doesn't operate from, and accept a co-working office only with clear signage, customers received there and its own staff on site during business hours.

Organic results follow other rules. AEK Media (Crows Nest, NSW address) and Digital Surfer (a (07) Queensland number, no address on the page) ranked organically in the same search. Organic position rests on the page and site, not the postcode.

  • Your Business Profile: what we touch and what stays yours

The profile stays registered to you; we're added as a manager you can remove at any time. We work on categories, services, photos you supply and review replies you approve, and never stuff keywords into the name or move the address. If a competitor's pin sits on an address they don't trade from, you can report it to Google under the same guidelines. Suspension triggers are on our national Business Profile checklist.

  • Reaching suburbs you drive to but aren’t based in

Organic pages reach where your pin can't. A Box Hill plumber who also takes jobs in Hawthorn needs a page that proves the Hawthorn work: jobs done there, the travel radius actually covered and photos you supply. A copy of the Box Hill page with the suburb swapped won't rank or convince anyone.

  • Do you need someone to visit? If yes, a remote team isn't for you, us included; pick an agency with an office in Melbourne.

  • Are the terms printed? If not, ask for them in writing before the proposal call.

Trades, clinics, NDIS, online stores and AI search: where Melbourne SEO starts for each

Greater Melbourne had about 595,600 trading businesses in June 2025, roughly 68% with no employees (ABS). Among businesses that employ staff, construction (about 32,700) and professional services (about 32,000) lead; professional firms mostly compete in the CBD band above.

  • Trades and construction

Trade searches are urgent and short-range: a blocked drain in Brighton, a switchboard upgrade in Craigieburn. Start with one page per service, real job photos and an honest service area. If the site can't carry that yet, start with tradie websites in Melbourne.

  • Clinics and dental practices

Patients search by treatment, then suburb, then compare who can see them soonest. Treatment pages that answer cost, booking and parking questions usually beat a blog. What the site needs first is under dental websites in Melbourne.

  • NDIS providers

Participants, families and support coordinators search by support type and area, often on someone else's behalf. Plain-language service pages and clear coverage areas matter more than volume. The site side is on NDIS websites in Melbourne.

  • Online stores, and sites that need rebuilding first

Ecommerce SEO lives in category and product pages, so structure comes first: see ecommerce websites in Melbourne and Shopify developers in Melbourne. If the site needs rebuilding first, compare WordPress developers in Melbourne and the build prices on our Melbourne page.

  • AI SEO in Melbourne: what it should change on your site

Google's AI Mode reached Australia on 8 October 2025 (Google). AI SEO is mostly ordinary groundwork: crawlable pages, specific services, real prices and named areas an AI answer can quote. Ask what any AI line item changes on your site. More in the national AI-search section; for chat that answers enquiries, see AI automation in Melbourne.

How it works

Your first month with us on Melbourne time, and how leaving works

We're online 3:30pm to 12:30am on the Melbourne clock (AEDT until 4 April 2027), Monday to Saturday, so you can reach us after the tools go down or the clinic closes. WhatsApp comes first, with email and video calls when you want them; any response-time commitment is written into your agreement.

Start on WhatsApp
  1. Send your URL, suburb and trade

WhatsApp the site, your suburb and what you do. The free review comes back with specific changes, each tied to a page on your site.

  2. Terms in writing

Notice period, any set-up fee, payment schedule and who owns the accounts and content, set down in one document before you sign.

  3. Access as a user, never a transfer

You add us as a user on Search Console, GA4 and your Business Profile. Ownership stays with you, and you can remove us at any time.

  4. Audit and first fixes

We crawl the site and start on the biggest problems. Calls fit the 3:30–5:00pm overlap with a 9–5 day, an evening after work, or Saturday. You wake up to a progress note on what changed.

  5. Monthly review in your own data

Each month we walk through your Search Console clicks, impressions and the pages that moved.

  6. Leaving, or staying past autumn

Leaving means removing our access; pages, fixes and redirects on your site stay live. Staying? From Monday 5 April 2027 our day becomes 2:30–11:30pm AEST, a 2.5-hour overlap.

Ask Ashish directly

Ask on WhatsApp

What's in an SEO package, and what should one cost in Melbourne?

A package is a monthly scope with a price on it, usually technical fixes, new or rewritten pages, Business Profile work and a report. whatsthedamage's Melbourne tiers run A$800–A$1,500 for one suburb, A$1,500–A$3,500 for a standard small business and A$3,000–A$6,000 for competitive sectors. Semrush's "starting from" budgets don't state inclusions, so ask for the monthly deliverables before comparing figures. We charge from A$990 up to A$9,800 a month, with no GST added.

How much does local SEO cost for one Melbourne suburb?

The published single-suburb band is A$800–A$1,500 a month (whatsthedamage, verified October 2026). Location moves it: growth areas such as Werribee and Craigieburn sit at A$800–A$1,400, the CBD and Southbank at A$1,500–A$2,500. Our A$990 floor falls inside the outer-suburb band and below the inner-city ones, with the scope at your price set after a free review.

What does an SEO audit cost in Melbourne?

whatsthedamage puts a one-off Melbourne audit at A$2,000–A$4,000, and StudioHawk's national guide gives A$2,000–A$5,000 for a comprehensive site audit. A proper audit covers crawling and indexing, page speed, duplicate or thin pages, internal links, your Business Profile and a prioritised fix list. Our free review is not an audit: it names a few changes on your own pages so you can judge the work before paying. The full crawl starts in the first retainer month.

Who is the best SEO agency in Melbourne?

No neutral ranking exists. Optimising's five-best list was written by Optimising, ranks itself first and dates from June 2025 despite its 2026 title; Semrush's Melbourne directory shows near-identical ratings. Choose on checks you can run: visits, who works your account, printed terms and what the price buys. If you want in-person meetings, an agency in Richmond, Cremorne or Prahran suits you better than we would.

Does an SEO agency need an office in Melbourne to rank my business?

Not for the organic results. On 6 October 2026, AEK Media (Crows Nest, NSW) and Digital Surfer (a Queensland phone number) ranked organically for "seo agency melbourne" with no Melbourne address shown. Map results depend on your premises and Business Profile, not your agency's office. We work remotely from Lucknow, India, and your profile and accounts stay in your name.

Will any SEO agency promise page one or the Melbourne map pack?

None should. Google's guide to hiring an SEO says no one can guarantee a number-one ranking, and its Business Profile help says local ranking can't be requested or bought. First Page's pay-on-performance offer carries qualifying conditions and exclusions in its terms of business, so read them first. Codingclave doesn't guarantee rankings or leads; you see the work in your own Search Console every month instead.

Should a Melbourne small business hire an SEO consultant, a freelancer or an agency?

It depends on whether you need a one-off fix or monthly work. A freelancer or consultant suits an audit or a batch of technical fixes, at A$150–A$300 an hour in StudioHawk's national guide; an agency with an office suits owners who want meetings in person. An in-house hire needs daily work to justify PayScale's Melbourne average of AU$70,791, about AU$79,300 with 12% super. Our remote founder-led team fits smaller budgets, if WhatsApp and evening calls work for you.

Is SEO still worth paying for in 2026 for a Melbourne business?

For demand that returns every year, usually yes, but it pays back later than ads: Google's hiring guide says SEOs typically need four months to a year to show benefit. Plain arithmetic, not a result: A$990 a month is A$11,880 a year, so a trade clearing A$400 margin per job needs about 2.5 extra jobs a month to cover it. Calls needed this month suit Google Ads better, with spend paid to Google. Unsure which fits this quarter? Send your site and we'll say honestly.
