Overview

Most stores go live 2–6 weeks after your content arrives, with every payment method and carrier in scope test-ordered first. You open and pay for the store yourself, so it's yours. We're a founder-led team in Lucknow, India, working your afternoon and evening, so switch-overs happen while your store is quiet.

Quick answer

How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer in Australia?

Codingclave sets one AUD figure for a whole Shopify job, inside A$2,400–A$19,500, before work starts. Theme fixes and speed work sit at the lower end, a new store on a theme in the lower half, and custom themes or Neto and WooCommerce moves with order history towards the top. Published figures elsewhere vary by route: Airtasker prices per task, Confetti Design lists $3,000–5,000 for theme customisation or a smaller build and $5,000–$15,000+ for a full custom store, and 23 Digital quotes $15,000–$35,000 for small stores. Support after launch is optional at A$80–A$240 a month, where Confetti lists $150–$500.

  • Our band: A$2,400–A$19,500 fixed, live 2–6 weeks after content arrives
  • Optional support afterwards: A$80–A$240 a month
  • Your Shopify plan is billed to you: Basic A$56 a month, or A$42 on yearly billing, plus 10% GST until a GST-registered ABN is added
  • Since August: purchase tracking hit by Shopify's checkout upgrade, and card surcharges that must come off from 1 October

What Shopify developers charge in Australia: eight ways to hire, side by side

Most places you'll look for a Shopify developer are directories and marketplaces. They show who exists, not what a finished store costs, how long it takes or whether a figure is in US or Australian dollars. Here's what each route publishes, side by side, so a per-task price isn't mistaken for a per-store one.

Shopify expert or Shopify developer?

'Expert' is the older name for firms in what Shopify now calls its Partner Directory. 'Developer' describes the work itself: Liquid templates, theme sections, app code. We aren't listed there, so judge us on things you can check: the written scope, our Google reviews and the work we've shipped.

As each source publishes it, checked 6 Oct 2026. Currency and GST basis differ from source to source.

Shopify jobs we price, and where each tends to land in the band

Can I hire someone to build me a Shopify store? Yes. Setting one up costs the plan (Basic is A$56 a month) plus the job behind it, and theme customisation, a new build and a Neto move with thousands of variants are different purchases, each with its own drivers.

Setting up a Shopify store in Australia, in order

  1. Start the trial in your business's name: 3 days free, then A$1 a month for 3 months.
  2. Once GST-registered, add your ABN to the billing profile.
  3. Set up Shopify Payments with your business and bank details.
  4. Under Settings > Taxes and duties, set up GST and decide whether prices include it.
  5. Connect carriers and publish refund, shipping and privacy policies.
  6. Test-order every payment method and carrier, then refund.
Shopify jobs by scope. Each gets one figure inside A$2,400–A$19,500 once scoped; the last column shows where that figure usually lands.

Your job's place in A$2,400–A$19,500 goes into a signed scope beside the app list and test orders, before anything in your store changes. A single small tweak still starts at our minimum, so for one line of change a task marketplace will cost less.

What to send for a quote:

  1. Store URL, or the old platform
  2. Product and variant count
  3. Apps in use
  4. Carriers
  5. Payment gateways
  6. Wanted-by date

Send those six on WhatsApp and you'll hear where the job sits in the band.

Two Shopify changes since August: purchase tracking and card surcharges

26 August 2026 was Shopify's deadline for stores below Plus to move to the new Thank you and Order status pages. Stores that hadn't moved were upgraded automatically, and anything relying on additional scripts or deprecated app features there stopped running, often including Meta, Google Ads, GA4 and TikTok purchase tags. Then, on 1 October, the surcharge rules changed.

  • A five-point tracking check you can run today

    1. GA4: do last week's purchase events roughly match Shopify's order count?
    2. Google Ads: is the purchase conversion still recording, with order values?
    3. Meta: do purchases in Events Manager line up with orders since late August?
    4. TikTok: does its events view show the same?
    5. Thank-you page apps: after a test order, do upsell, survey and review-request apps still appear?

Repairs use web pixels, app pixels and checkout blocks, not pasted code. Google Ads and Meta use these purchase events to set bids, so a tag that stops firing misleads bidding without any warning.

  • Card surcharges after 1 October 2026

Following the RBA's March 2026 Conclusions Paper, eftpos (debit and prepaid cards) and Mastercard and Visa (credit, debit and prepaid) brought in no-surcharge rules from 1 October 2026, and American Express, UnionPay and PayPal have also decided to remove surcharging. If your checkout still adds a card fee through an app or a fee line, take it off; the RBA says merchants must, unless an exception applies, which your payment provider can confirm.

Ask for a tracking and surcharge check with your store URL and ad platforms; you'll see what fires and what doesn't before any repair is quoted. Campaign work itself sits with Google Ads management.

Shopify plans in AUD, and what each one changes in a build

Plans are billed in AUD, Shopify Payments runs here, and the plan decides staff logins, stock locations, trade catalogues and the fee on orders paid outside Shopify Payments. Card rates are in our running-costs table.

  • GST on your Shopify bill

Shopify adds 10% GST to an Australian store's subscription and shipping labels until a GST-registered ABN goes in under Settings > Billing > Billing profile; only invoices issued afterwards drop it. Shopify Payments processing fees already include GST. The full answer is in the FAQ below.

  • Afterpay and Zip orders carry the plan’s third-party fee

Afterpay and Zip connect as separate provider apps, not inside Shopify Payments. Shopify's help centre says that when customers pay by an alternative method, "you'll be charged third-party transaction fees for their purchases": 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, on top of the provider's own fee. Check the fee shown under Settings > Payments for your store. The dollar effect is in our fee maths example.

  • When Plus earns its A$3,700-plus a month

Not for wholesale alone: the lower plans already run up to 3 active B2B catalogues on new Shopify Markets. Plus pays when each trade company needs its own catalogue, you take trade deposits, stock sits in over 10 locations, or over 15 staff need logins.

  • Is Shopify free for developers?

For building, yes. Shopify's dev store docs call a dev store a free store for building themes; its password page comes off only after transfer to a merchant or a move to a paid plan. We usually build inside your own trial store instead, so it's yours from day one.

Customise a theme, commission a custom theme, or go headless

Most jobs in our band belong in the first row. Still choosing a platform? See our Shopify vs WooCommerce vs custom comparison.

When headless is overkill

One market, a few thousand SKUs at most, and no app or content site sharing the product data: a theme does that job. Headless adds a second codebase and deployment, plus developer time for edits the theme editor handles. Shopify's Hydrogen docs put Oxygen hosting at no extra charge on paid plans, but the build and upkeep still cost more. Custom themes go faster with designs signed off first, which our UI/UX design service can scope.

Three storefront routes. Oxygen terms from Shopify's Hydrogen docs on shopify.dev, checked 6 Oct 2026.

Afterpay, Zip, Australia Post, StarTrack, Xero and store GST: set up, then test-ordered

Does Shopify accept Zip? Yes, and Afterpay; both connect as payment providers. Does Shopify use Australia Post? Through apps in the Shopify App Store that connect your own MyPost Business, eParcel or StarTrack account. Installing them is quick. We place a real order through each before launch and record it on your sign-off sheet.

  • The AusPost token

The Australia Post API key or 'token' a shipping app asks for comes from your own Australia Post business account, not from us, so changing developers later never touches it.

  • Xero or MYOB

Shopify connects to both. Agree with your bookkeeper whether sales post as one daily summary per gateway or one invoice per order, and give each gateway its own clearing account so a short payout shows up straight away. Connector choices and MYOB routes are on our Xero and MYOB integration page.

Australian set-up and the test order run for each before launch. Provider fees live on the ecommerce page.

Moving to Shopify from Neto or WooCommerce, with redirects and an evening switch

Neto or Shopify? If Neto runs your counter, marketplace listings and trade pricing, price a Shopify replacement for each before deciding. The data is the easier half; URLs, and features the old platform handled without an app, are where moves go wrong.

  • Neto (Maropost) exports, reshaped for Shopify

Neto isn't a source in Shopify's Store Migration app, so products, customers and orders arrive as CSV exports rebuilt into Shopify's import columns. Hand work goes into variants (parent and child SKUs become one product with options), custom fields (mapped to metafields) and customer accounts (sign-in tried on one imported customer).

  • Neto features that need a Shopify replacement

A counter POS becomes Shopify POS, with stock by location loaded first. Each marketplace needs a Shopify channel or app. Trade price groups fit up to three B2B catalogues below Plus.

  • Running Neto alongside Shopify

Some stores keep both for a while: an overlap during cut-over, or Neto kept for wholesale while retail moves. That works only if one system owns stock and the other follows. Any sync is an app or custom work, priced in the scope.

  • WooCommerce through the free Store Migration app

Is a WooCommerce to Shopify move free? The app is; your time, redirects and order history are not. Shopify's free Store Migration app lists WooCommerce as a source and brings across product and customer data, warning that some platforms don't export everything. Orders, subscriptions, reviews and plugins without a Shopify equivalent are handled separately and listed in the scope.

  • The redirect map, delivered as a file

Old URL beside new Shopify URL, checked against the pages Search Console reports as indexed. It loads before the domain moves, and the file is yours.

  • Cut-over in your evening

Product edits freeze after the final export, and the domain switches in your evening: we're at our desks until 12:30am in Sydney during daylight saving, or 9:30pm in Perth.

Redirects avoid needless losses, though positions can still move for a while after a platform change; later ranking work sits with our SEO service. Staying on WooCommerce? See WordPress development.

Send your Neto or WooCommerce URL and product count for a fixed AUD migration scope.

A Shopify team in India on Australian evenings: what it means for your store

Codingclave has no Australian office, no ABN and no Shopify Partner status; you should know that before the first message. Ashish Sharma founded the company in Lucknow in 2017 and still leads delivery. We work Monday to Saturday, starting in your afternoon, so there's no cover before then and none on Sundays. For a Shopify store, that means evening cut-overs while traffic is quiet and changes that move on overnight.

In Adelaide our day runs 3:00pm–12:00am, in Brisbane and the Gold Coast 2:30pm–11:30pm, and in Darwin 2:00pm–11:00pm. The Australia overview has every city.

  • Sale-day prep

Discount codes, banners and app settings for a sale are finished the afternoon before, while we're both online. A fault spotted at 9am in Sydney can't be looked at before 3:30pm, when our day starts (Mon–Sat). Your previous theme stays in the theme library, so you can switch back yourself under Online Store > Themes while we're offline.

  • Changes sent in your afternoon

Edits sent in your afternoon can be worked on that evening (Mon–Sat), so the preview has usually moved on by the next morning.

  • What you can check about us

Eight checks for any Shopify developer you’re weighing up, us included

Which is the best Shopify agency in Australia? No list can rank agencies for your job; these eight checks will. Put them to every shortlisted name, ours included.

8 questions to ask

  1. The store is opened and billed in your name. Shopify charges your card, never the developer's.
  2. Staff or collaborator access only. Your owner login stays with you.
  3. Every paid app listed with its monthly cost. Apps are rent, so they belong in the budget.
  4. Work happens on an unpublished theme copy. The live store keeps trading until you approve the switch.
  5. Test orders listed per gateway and carrier. Refunds included.
  6. The redirect map arrives as a file. One row per old URL, yours to keep.
  7. Code ownership and handover are written into the scope.
  8. Support terms are written down. Warranty period and reply times agreed before you pay anything.

How it works

From store URL to evening launch, in six steps

Start on WhatsApp
  1. Store URL on WhatsApp

The store address, or the platform you're leaving, and a line on the job.

  2. Short call if you want one

Early in your evening, or the whole quote stays on WhatsApp. Staff or collaborator access is requested only when the scope needs a look inside your admin; the owner password never leaves you.

  3. Written scope

A fixed AUD price, every app with its monthly cost to you, and the list of test orders we'll run.

  4. Build on an unpublished theme copy

Your live store keeps selling while we work in your evening.

  5. Test orders and sign-off

Card, Afterpay and Zip orders with refunds, carrier labels and the GST line, ticked off with you.

  6. Evening cut-over and handover

Publish or domain switch while the store is quiet, then code, redirect file and access handed over.

Ask Ashish directly

Ask on WhatsApp

Should I pay a Shopify developer hourly or a fixed price?

Hourly or per-task pricing suits a tiny change you can describe exactly, and marketplaces such as Airtasker price that way. A store build or migration has too many unknowns for a meter, so ask for a fixed scope listing apps, test orders and redirects. Codingclave fixes each job inside A$2,400–A$19,500 before work begins, and anything added later is priced before it's done.

Can I hire someone to build me a Shopify store?

Yes. Start the Shopify trial yourself so the store and its billing sit in your name from day one. Add the developer as staff, or approve their collaborator request, rather than sharing your owner password. Get a written list of every paid app and its monthly cost before work begins, and have your logo, product spreadsheet, photos and shipping rules ready; most builds wait on those.

Is Shopify still worth it in 2026?

Yes, it runs in Australia with AUD billing and Shopify Payments, and for most small and mid-sized Australian stores it's still good value. Basic is A$56 a month (A$42 on yearly billing) and covers hosting and checkout. Costs climb when you need a catalogue per trade company, trade deposits or more than 10 stock locations, which means Plus. WooCommerce can suit a content-heavy WordPress store; custom software suits ordering rules no platform handles.

How much do Shopify developers make?

SEEK's closest page is web developer. For October 2026 it shows A$99,142 a year for full-time web developer roles in the Information & Communication Technology industry, noting some advertised salaries include super and others don't. As an employer, set that plus leave, equipment and hiring time against a scoped project: one build and occasional changes usually cost less as a fixed A$2,400–A$19,500 job with optional support.

Does Shopify charge GST in Australia?

On its own bill, yes. Australian stores pay 10% GST on the Shopify subscription and on shipping labels. Once you're GST-registered, add your ABN under Settings > Billing > Billing profile and invoices issued after that carry no GST; pending or unpaid ones aren't changed. Shopify Payments processing fees already include 10% GST, invoiced monthly on the 5th of the following month. Ask your accountant about input tax credits.

Do Afterpay orders cost extra on Shopify?

Yes. Afterpay and Zip connect as separate provider apps rather than through Shopify Payments, and Shopify's help centre says purchases made by alternative methods attract its third-party transaction fee: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, on top of the provider's own merchant fee. Check the fee shown under Settings > Payments for your store. On a Basic store with heavy buy-now-pay-later sales, that gap can justify a plan change.

How do I migrate from Neto to Shopify?

Shopify's Store Migration app has no Neto connector, so the move runs on CSV exports. Parent and child SKUs become products with variants, custom fields map to metafields, and customer sign-in is tested. Find a Shopify replacement for your counter POS and each marketplace, build a redirect map, freeze product edits, then switch the domain on a quiet evening.

How much is Shopify Plus per month in Australia?

Shopify's Australian pricing page lists Plus from A$3,700 a month, with no yearly figure shown, and mentions 1- and 3-year Plus terms, so ask Shopify which term its quote assumes. Plus buys unlimited staff accounts, up to 200 inventory locations, B2B catalogues assigned per company, trade deposits and a 0.2% third-party provider fee. For wholesale pricing across a few customer groups, the lower plans may be enough.
