Quick answer

What do Hobart web designers charge for a small business website?

Going by published figures, expect roughly $900–$6,000 for a small Hobart business site. Studios in Hobart that show prices start at $900 (Linxi) and $1,450+ for three pages (Forte); White Peak, on Macquarie Street, says small business sites run from $3,000 upwards, and Wakeford's builds start at $4,000 with a monthly retainer on top. Redback, a Melbourne agency on Google's first page, starts at $7,500 + GST. The independent guide whatsthedamage puts a 5–10 page site at $2,000–$6,000. Ours: A$900–A$4,300 on WordPress or A$1,200–A$6,900 for a custom-designed site, as one written figure.

  • Sole trader or 3-page site: about $900–$1,500 at the cheaper studios
  • 5–10 page business site: $2,000–$6,000 (whatsthedamage guide)
  • Online store with us: A$2,400–A$19,500, plus Shopify fees if chosen
  • Optional hosting and support with us: A$80–A$240 a month
  • Timeline: 1–3 weeks with us; about 4 weeks at White Peak; 3–4 months for Redback custom

What page one looked like: Of the nine organic results, seven pointed to Hobart addresses (one a LinkedIn page for an Elizabeth Street studio) and two to mainland agencies, in Melbourne and Mooloolaba. Of the six Hobart businesses there, only Wakeford and White Peak publish a figure. Below page one, six of the nine priced providers work from the mainland or a national platform.

At the same price, read the inclusions. Linxi, in Hobart, also starts at $900. Set any two quotes side by side and check the page count, who writes the copy, whose name the domain sits in, revision rounds, after-launch help and the go-live date. Ours answers each in writing.

Build-only, build plus retainer, or a monthly plan: how Hobart websites are paid for

The figures above aren't like for like. Some buy a finished site you keep, some bundle the site with a marketing service, and some rent you a site by the month. Before setting $699 against $8,000, work out which model each quote follows.

Leaving a rented or proprietary site can mean starting again. On a build-only site, three costs keep running:

  • Hosting and support: A$80–A$240 a month with us (A$960–A$2,880 a year), or any host you prefer.
  • Domain renewal: billed by your registrar, never through us; the .com.au rate is in our national cost guide.
  • Shopify, for a store: Basic at A$56 a month billed monthly or A$42 billed yearly, card rates from 1.7% + 30c.

As a Hobart example, a custom business site at A$1,200–A$6,900 plus twelve months of our hosting comes to A$2,160–A$9,780 before the domain. Australia-wide averages and GST sit under what a website costs across Australia.

When a Hobart-based studio is the better pick, and when a fixed remote quote makes sense

  • Choose a studio in Hobart if…

you want workshops around a table, on-location photography or filming, or a local SEO retainer with someone who drops in. Map results lean on a Business Profile with a Hobart address and steady reviews, ground a studio in town works daily. Our SEO services page sets out what a retainer covers; our digital marketing guide goes further.

  • A fixed remote quote fits if…

you want scope and price in writing before work starts, a build counted in weeks, and evening calls suit you. You get a private staging link, written speed and accessibility targets, and our past work and Google reviews to judge us by. Client logins or booking-system links count as web development, quoted separately.

  • Your .com.au stays in your name

auDA asks a .com.au registrant to show an Australian connection: normally an ABN or ACN; foreign companies can use an ARBN, and an Australian trade mark or application also qualifies. So the domain is registered in your business name, where it belongs, and we set it up with you on the first call. See the domain and code hand-over checklist.

Which website your Hobart business needs: trade, practice, hospitality or property

The ABS counted 6,940 actively trading businesses in the City of Hobart council area at 30 June 2025, down from 6,994 a year earlier. Of those, 4,228 (61%) employ nobody and 1,609 have one to four staff, so most need a lean, phone-first site the owner can update. The seven councils covering most of Greater Hobart total 19,846.

  • CBD practices and consultancies: credibility before contact

Professional services (1,182) and health care (1,017) lead the Hobart council area. Clients read practitioner pages, qualifications, fees and the booking button before they ring; see allied health clinic websites.

  • Eastern Shore, Kingborough and Sorell tradies: quote requests from a phone

Construction leads in Clarence (1,073), Kingborough (647) and Sorell (326). Someone typing "builder Howrah" or "plumber Bellerive" wants your suburbs, licence number, tap-to-call and a quote form that takes photos, without scrolling. A WordPress build in the A$900–A$4,300 band usually covers a sole operator; more in websites for tradies.

Send your trade and suburbs on WhatsApp for a fixed AUD price.

  • Property and rental businesses (857 in the Hobart council area)

The ABS category is rental, hiring and real estate services, so it also counts property investors, landlords and hire businesses. An agency's own site earns its keep from appraisal requests and landlords seeking a property manager; see real estate agency websites.

Writing for the visitor planning a Hobart trip from Melbourne, Sydney or overseas

The City of Hobart's February 2026 economic snapshot estimates 1,025,000 domestic overnight visitors in the four quarters to September 2025, 205,000 international visitors in the four quarters to December 2025, and 2,826,000 domestic passengers through Hobart Airport in the year to September 2025, while warning that sub-state visitor estimates need caution.

Most visitors find you weeks ahead, on a phone in another city, often at night. They want rates or an enquiry form that works when you're not answering, a fast mobile page and a menu that isn't a PDF.

  • Accommodation and short-stay hosts

Give each room its own page with real photos, beds and cancellation terms, then a booking button or a form capturing dates and guest numbers. Our hotel management software adds a reservation calendar, front-desk check-in and housekeeping status; Australian payment and channel set-up is scoped in your quote. See also a motel website versus Booking.com.

  • Cafés, restaurants and cellar doors

Put the menu on the page as text, so it loads on a weak signal and Google can read it, keep seasonal hours editable from a phone, and give groups and tastings their own enquiry path. See restaurant and café websites.

  • Tours and experiences

Ask for a preferred and back-up date, group size, pick-up point and access needs, then say what happens if the weather turns.

Selling from Hobart to the mainland: what a Tasmanian online store has to get right

Greater Hobart added just 542 residents (0.2%) in 2024–25 to reach 255,250, the slowest growth of any capital, and lost about 1,900 people to other parts of Australia. Word of mouth runs out quickly in a market that size, so a store has to work for buyers in Launceston, Devonport, Burnie and on the mainland too.

  • Shipping zones: Tasmania, mainland and Bass Strait islands priced separately

One flat national rate either overcharges a buyer in Sandy Bay or loses money on a parcel to Perth, so set separate zones for Tasmania, the mainland and the Bass Strait islands. We don't pick carriers or quote freight: you confirm rates with your carrier during scoping, and we build them into the checkout.

  • Free-freight thresholds and heavy or chilled goods

Settle these before the build: the order value at which free freight still pays, in Tasmania and to the mainland; which lines are too heavy or perishable to post; whether chilled goods dispatch only early in the week; and whether you offer click-and-collect in Hobart. Each answer becomes a checkout rule, on Shopify or WooCommerce alike.

Our stores run A$2,400–A$19,500 over 2–6 weeks; payments and returns nationally are covered in e-commerce development in Australia.

Send your product list and the states you ship to on WhatsApp for a store quote in AUD.

Consultants and suppliers to government, hospitals and Antarctic science: sites that pass a buyer’s check

At the 2021 Census, State Government Administration employed 3.3% of Greater Hobart's workers against 1.4% nationally, and hospitals were the largest employing industry (4.8%). The Australian Antarctic Division, which runs the Australian Antarctic Program, is headquartered at Kingston. Suppliers to these organisations get looked up online before anyone answers their email.

  • Capability, people and proof

Buyers work from a checklist, so give them a capability statement page (plus the same content as a PDF), named team bios with qualifications, case studies stating the problem, the work and the result, and a named contact. It won't win the contract for you, but it stops your website being the reason a procurement officer moves to the next name.

  • Accessible and light by default

We can set WCAG 2.2 AA as a written target in your quote (a target, not a certification). Some government and hospital networks restrict heavy scripts, so keep pages light and skip autoplay video.

  • Health, disability and community services

Other Social Assistance Services employed 3,951 Greater Hobart residents in 2021. Referral and consent forms are covered in NDIS provider websites.

Ask for a capability-site quote on WhatsApp with capability, team and case study pages.

Suburb or council, business type, current web address and any Hobart quote you already hold.

  2. Receive a written AUD quote

One figure, the pages it covers, the timeline and the payment schedule, before anything is paid.

  3. Register the domain, plan the pages

How much should I pay a website designer in Hobart?

For a small business, published figures cluster between about $900 and $6,000. Hobart studios that list prices start at $900 (Linxi), $1,450+ for three pages (Forte) and $3,000 upwards (White Peak). Melbourne's Redback starts its largest tier at $35,000 + GST. Ours: A$900–A$4,300 for WordPress and A$1,200–A$6,900 for a custom-designed business site, quoted as one written figure.

Is affordable web design in Hobart worth it, or will a cheap site cost me later?

Yes, if you own what you pay for. A $699–$1,500 site usually means a template, three to eight pages and your own words and photos, with little custom design or SEO. The later cost comes when the site sits on a platform you can't leave or the domain is in someone else's name, so confirm you'll hold the .com.au, files and logins.

Do I need a web designer who is actually based in Hobart?

Only if you need someone in the room: in-person workshops, on-site photography and a local SEO retainer with visits favour a Hobart studio. Scope, design reviews and a written price work remotely over video and a staging link. In our saved 6 October 2026 search, seven of the nine organic results pointed to Hobart addresses and two to mainland agencies. We are in Lucknow, India, and say so up front.

Is web design still in demand in Tasmania in 2026?

Yes. The ABS counted 45,094 actively trading Tasmanian businesses at 30 June 2026, up 850 (1.9%) in a year, with 5,881 entering the count during 2025–26, 3,879 of them newly started. Each needs to be findable, and most want a site they own. The shift is at the low end: templates and AI builders now cover a one-page placeholder, so paid work leans towards sites that bring in bookings, quotes or sales.

Web designer or web developer: which does a Hobart business need?

A designer shapes how the site looks and reads: layout, page structure, how a visitor reaches the enquiry button. A developer builds what sits behind it: client logins, booking systems, links to your stock or accounting software, custom calculators. Most Hobart sole traders and practices need design on a standard platform such as WordPress. Once the brief includes logins or one system talking to another, it is development work, quoted separately with its own timeline.

Is a $49-a-month plan cheaper than a Hobart build over three years?

Not always, on price alone. Over 36 months a $49-a-month plan with no build fee (Netbound's published entry price) costs $1,764. A WordPress build from us starts at A$900; on $30-a-month hosting, three years comes to about A$1,980, and on our A$80–A$240 support plan, A$3,780–A$9,540. The difference buys ownership: with a build, the site, files and domain stay yours and can move hosts.

Will a new website get my business onto Google's map results in Hobart?

Not on its own, and nobody can guarantee rankings or leads. Map results lean heavily on your Google Business Profile: a verified Hobart address or service area, the right category, photos and steady reviews, with businesses near the searcher tending to be favoured. A website supports that profile by matching its name, address and phone number, loading fast on a phone and giving each service a clear page.

What is the average cost of website design in Australia?

There is no official average; the ABS doesn't track it, and published guides measure different things. For Hobart, the independent whatsthedamage guide puts a 5–10 page small business site at $2,000–$6,000 and a custom build at $6,000–$15,000. Australia-wide figures, with sources and dates, are compared on our national website cost page.
