Every published price for a Melbourne online store, side by side

How much does it cost to pay someone to design your online store in Melbourne? On 6 October 2026 we read every page in Google's organic top ten for ecommerce website design in Melbourne, plus Fox & Lee from the map pack and the one Melbourne cost guide. Not one organic result states a price for an online store. This is everything we found in writing.

"From" is a floor: Fox & Lee gives no upper figure, so a bigger catalogue or an extra integration lifts it. Read the whatsthedamage bands with care, because it names none of its sources and sells leads to agencies. Pricing a brochure site instead? See our Melbourne page.

What each Melbourne price actually buys: products, design, integrations, migration

How much should an ecommerce website cost? It depends on scope, and the published packages show how quickly scope moves. Christom's Essentials+ stops at 10 simple products and Advanced+ at 20 variable ones; Fox & Lee's Starter covers up to 50 products, and Xero or CRM work pushes you to its Growth tier. Fox & Lee includes 30 days of post-launch support, while whatsthedamage puts yearly upkeep at 15–25% of the build cost.

Three things move a store within our band: product and variant count, the number of named integrations (Xero, a CRM, a 3PL warehouse) and how much data migrates. As a rough guide to where you might land:

  • Near the bottom: a candle maker with about 30 products on a Shopify theme, Australia Post rates and no integrations.
  • Around the middle: a custom design with a few hundred size and colour variants, zone shipping, click-and-collect and Xero.
  • Near the top: a shoe label with 900 variants moving from Neto, with Xero, a 3PL warehouse and full customer and order history carried across.

The fixed figure written into your quote is the one that counts.

How many weeks a Melbourne store takes, and the real cause of delays

Published Melbourne timelines for ecommerce web development mostly run one to three months. Our 2–6 weeks starts when your product data and photos are complete, not when you sign, so the three items below decide your launch date.

  • Product data is the critical path

Late stores are usually waiting on a spreadsheet, not on code. Our template has one row per SKU: title, variants, price, shipping weight and stock. Fill it from your till or supplier export before kick-off.

  • Photos

Shoot before kick-off on one background and image ratio, with file names matching your SKUs. A shoot that starts after kick-off moves the launch date with it.

  • Decisions that stall builds

Shipping rules, returns wording and who signs off hold up more launches than any feature. Settle shipping in week one and name one approver.

Where Melbourne’s parcels go: delivery and checkout choices from Victorian data

Is a proper online store still worth paying for in 2026? Australia Post's eCommerce Report 2026 puts national online spending at $82.6b for 2025, 24% of all retail, with shoppers in Victoria accounting for $20b, up 13%. ABS growth data adds where the new households are: the biggest 2024–25 gains were in Rockbank–Mount Cottrell, Mickleham–Yuroke, Fraser Rise–Plumpton and Clyde North, while Tarneit North grew 18.5%.

What we would build from those numbers:

  • Zones that match the map. Metro Melbourne and regional Victoria priced apart, with test orders to 3030 Point Cook, 3336 Fraser Rise, 3029 Tarneit, 3335 Rockbank, 3064 Mickleham and 3978 Clyde North before launch.
  • Out-of-home delivery. 32% of shoppers would change retailer to collect from places like Parcel Lockers, so the checkout accepts locker and pickup addresses.
  • Speed where timing matters. 26% expect same-day or next-day delivery on time-sensitive orders; offer it on those products only.

Australia Post and StarTrack set-up is on our national ecommerce page.

A Melbourne shop counter and a website on one stock count

For a retailer with a counter, stock is the hard part of selling online. A boutique on Chapel Street or a homewares shop on Brunswick Street can sell the same last unit twice, once over the counter and once online. Can one stock list run both? Yes, when till and website share it.

  • One SKU list

Each product gets one SKU for till, website and supplier orders. We import from the cleanest system and retire the other list.

  • Click-and-collect

A pickup order reserves stock once paid, shows your counter hours and sends a ready-to-collect message.

Selling wine, beer or spirits online from Victoria: the checkout features the rules require

A craft brewery in Collingwood or Brunswick, a distillery, a bottle shop or a Heathcote winery can sell online from Victoria, but the store has to do more than take payment. A remote seller's licence covers selling by phone, app or website and delivering, and suits manufacturers and online retailers. The non-refundable application fee is $690.80 for up to 750 m² of floor space or $1,295.30 above; apply at least 11 weeks ahead. Eligible licensees without one must notify Liquor Control Victoria before taking online or phone orders.

Shopify, WooCommerce or custom: matching the platform to your Melbourne business

What is the cheapest ecommerce platform in Australia? Per month, Square Online's free plan, the nearest thing to a free ecommerce website: $0 plus 2.2% per sale. The WooCommerce plugin is free, but hosting and extensions aren't. Shopify Basic is A$42 a month billed yearly or A$56 monthly, after a 3-day trial and then $1 a month for three months. Cheapest per month isn't always cheapest at your sales volume; our national guide does the fee maths.

Which website is best for ecommerce? The table is the short answer. Ask any agency whether it builds on more than one platform, since a single-platform shop will recommend its own, and check its running-cost figures: Christom still lists Shopify from "$39/month", while Shopify Australia's Basic plan is A$56 billed monthly or A$42 billed yearly.

We don't build on or look after Magento or Adobe Commerce, though we can move a store off it. If you're staying on that stack, a Magento-based agency such as Zeemo, or a larger shop like 23 Digital, fits better.

Rebuilding a Melbourne store you already run: what carries across

We can move stores from Neto (now Maropost), Magento, WooCommerce or Squarespace. Pick a quiet trading week for the switch, well clear of the Cup Day to Boxing Day run, and see the step-by-step Neto and WooCommerce method if Shopify is the destination. This is what transfers.

  • Products and variants

Titles, descriptions, prices, SKUs, variants, images and stock move by spreadsheet, then get checked against the old store.

  • Customer accounts

Names, emails, addresses and marketing consent come across. Passwords usually can't, because they're stored hashed, so we plan a reset email for launch week.

  • Order history

Past orders can be imported so regulars see what they bought. How much history moves is set in the quote.

  • 301 redirects

Every old URL gets a permanent redirect to its new address so links and bookmarks keep working. We test the redirect list on staging, then again on the live domain.

Comparing Melbourne ecommerce quotes: nine questions, with the answers builders publish

Send these nine questions to every ecommerce agency or website designer on your shortlist; "not published" means you'll have to ask.

When a Melbourne agency is the better pick

Choose a builder with people in Melbourne if your store needs:

  • in-person product shoots or warehouse visits
  • a Shopify Plus partner, because a plan or contract requires one
  • an existing Magento or Adobe Commerce estate looked after
  • an ERP-heavy stack such as Apparel21, Pronto or Cin7, where an agency like 23 Digital that lists those systems is the stronger fit
  • procurement that needs an onshore entity or an ABN

We'd rather say so now than take a job that suits someone else. For trade portals and ERP-linked builds we do take on, see custom software in Melbourne.

Ask Ashish directly

Ask on WhatsApp

How much does it cost to pay someone to design an online store in Melbourne?

Our band is A$2,400–A$19,500, fixed in writing with no GST added. A 30-product store on a Shopify theme with simple shipping sits near the bottom; a large Neto move with Xero and a 3PL warehouse sits near the top. For comparison, Fox & Lee starts at $6,000 +GST for up to 50 products, and the cost guide whatsthedamage gives $10,000–$30,000 for a custom Melbourne store. Platform plans and card fees come on top.

What is the cheapest eCommerce platform in Australia?

By monthly fee, Square Online's free plan: $0 a month plus 2.2% of each online sale. The WooCommerce plugin is free, but you pay for hosting and extensions. Shopify Basic is A$42 a month billed yearly or A$56 monthly, after a 3-day trial and three months at $1. At higher turnover, a lower card rate can matter more than a lower subscription; our national ecommerce guide works the numbers.

How long does it take to build an ecommerce website in Melbourne?

Builders that publish a figure quote 6–12 weeks (Fox & Lee), 6–8 weeks (Christom) or 4–8 weeks or more (SGD). We take 2–6 weeks, counted from the day your product spreadsheet and photos are complete. Product data causes most delays, followed by undecided shipping rules and returns wording; custom design and big migrations sit at the longer end.

What does my website need to sell wine, beer or spirits online in Victoria?

The site must show your liquor licence number and the prescribed under-18 warning where customers order, and first-time buyers confirm they're 18 or over, with the driver checking ID. Gift orders need recipient details and an 18+ confirmation from sender and recipient, same-day orders can't be left unattended, and deliveries finish before 11pm. You'll need a remote seller's licence or, with another eligible licence, to notify Liquor Control Victoria. General information only, not legal advice.

Can I still add a card surcharge at my online store's checkout in Victoria?

Not on Visa, Mastercard or eftpos cards. Under the Reserve Bank's conclusions released on 31 March 2026, surcharges on debit, prepaid and credit cards on those three networks are no longer allowed from 1 October 2026. If your checkout still adds a card fee line, remove it and build the cost of card acceptance into your product prices instead. Buy now, pay later services were left for a later consultation, so check your provider's own terms.

Which platform is best for a small ecommerce business in Melbourne?

It follows from how you sell. Selling direct, with or without a shopfront, usually points to Shopify, because till and website share one stock list. A brand whose content and search traffic already live in WordPress usually suits WooCommerce. Trade accounts, customer price lists and ERP sync point to a custom build in Next.js or Laravel. We don't build on or look after Magento or Adobe Commerce; a Magento-based agency suits stores staying there.

Are Melbourne ecommerce web design prices quoted with or without GST?

It varies, so check each quote. Fox & Lee prints its store prices plus GST, and Christom states that its prices exclude GST; whatsthedamage doesn't say. Our quotes carry no GST, because we're an overseas supplier and not registered for it. If you aren't registered for GST, $6,000 +GST costs you $6,600. If you are registered, you can usually claim that GST back, so compare the ex-GST figures and ask your accountant about reverse charge.

Can a team in India build my Melbourne online store, and when are you online?

Yes, with clear hours and written terms. Until 4 April 2027 we're online 3:30pm to 12:30am Melbourne time, Monday to Saturday, a 1.5-hour overlap with a 9–5 day; from 5 April 2027 it's 2:30pm to 11:30pm. You brief us in the afternoon, test in your evening and find progress by morning.
