Overview

What Sydney e-commerce agencies publish for a store build

We opened the online store pages of seven agencies that rank for ecommerce website design in Sydney and recorded every store price, build time and stated focus they print. Four give a figure. 23 Digital, TheAd and Milk Digital publish no store price, so you can't compare them until you've sat through a consultation.

Why the agency floors sit at A$15,000–A$25,000. Most of the money pays for stages wrapped around the build. EB Pearls sells a fixed-fee A$15,000 prototyping phase, and its Sydney team handles design, project management and account management. Click Click Media's schedule runs 14–18 weeks. For in-person workshops, an ERP integration or a national rollout, those stages are worth paying for. A shop with a few hundred products and an ordinary checkout rarely uses them; Click Click Media's own page says a template store "costs a few thousand dollars". That is the kind of store most of our Sydney briefs are.

Headless builds sit outside our band and go to custom software in Sydney. A site without a shop is priced on our Sydney website cost page.

8 to 28 weeks or 2 to 6: where the time goes in a Sydney store build

The agency schedules above stretch from 8 weeks to 28; ours is 2–6. The gap has less to do with coding speed than with what is already on your desk: theme, checkout and delivery rules take days, while a finished product list or a photo shoot can take weeks to arrive.

What has to be ready before a 2–6 week build can hold
ItemWhy launch waits on itWho supplies it

Payment provider accountTest orders need a live account in your business nameYou open it; we connect it
Old-store export and URL listCustomer import and the redirect map come from itYou grant access; we pull the data

Our 2–6 week clock starts once the six items above are in. A new shop with a few dozen products and finished photos sits near the two-week mark. A rebuild carrying thousands of variants, customer accounts and years of old URLs sits near six.

Sydney online store maintenance costs after launch

How Sydney shoppers buy online, and the checkout features that follow from it

Australia Post's eCommerce Report 2026 is the most useful public picture of the market a Sydney store sells into. NSW shoppers spent A$26.4 billion online in 2025, up 13% and roughly one in every three dollars Australians spent online (state estimates leave out buy now, pay later), and the CBD's 2000 postcode led the country for online shopping volume per person.

Australia Post eCommerce Report 2026 findings and the build item each calls for

No more card surcharges from 1 October 2026: what to strip out of your store

The Reserve Bank's Conclusions Paper, released on 31 March 2026, ended card surcharging from 1 October 2026, and NAB's merchant guidance sets out the reach: eftpos, Mastercard, Visa, American Express and UnionPay, on debit, prepaid and credit cards, at the counter or online. The ban names those networks, so check fees on other payment methods with your provider. Older stores often still carry a surcharge somewhere:

  • a fee line or surcharge app at checkout
  • a "card fees apply" notice in the cart or on product pages
  • a clause in the terms and conditions
  • invoice, receipt and trade-quote templates
  • order confirmation and abandoned-cart emails

Take each one out, then decide with your accountant whether prices need to rise.

Two further dates matter. From 30 October 2026, card schemes and large acquirers must publish their average merchant service fees every quarter. From 1 April 2027, a cap on foreign-card interchange applies.

The top e-commerce platforms in Australia by live stores, matched to Sydney sellers

StoreLeads counts live online stores by platform; its Australian reports were updated on 2 October 2026. By raw count the top five are Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace and Ecwid, two of them site builders with a shop bolted on. BigCommerce and Magento come next and are shrinking, by 12% and 28% in a year. A Sydney store on either, or on Neto, is worth pricing a move to Shopify or WooCommerce before its next redesign, scoped like a rebuild with the redirect map included.

Example Sydney store scopes, and where each lands in our range

ABS counts reported by SEO Guys put 36,678 retail businesses in Greater Sydney at 30 June 2025, up 6.8% since 2021, and 59,686 in transport, postal and warehousing, up 17.8%. That second figure matters to online sellers, because more Sydney brands now ship through a third-party warehouse than from a back room.

Example scopes, not client projects. Each is priced as one fixed figure after scoping; a full trade portal or headless build is quoted as custom software instead.
Example storeCatalogue and featuresLikely platformWhere it usually sits in our band

Orders flowing into Xero or MYOB are a separately scoped line; see our Xero and MYOB integration page. Trade logins with account price lists fit inside the band as a layer on a normal store; a full wholesale portal goes to custom software in Sydney. Who builds your store, when they work, and who owns the accounts

The person you message is the person building your store. Ashish Sharma started Codingclave in Lucknow in 2017 and still leads delivery, so no account manager relays your changes. Plainly: we're an Indian business, with no Sydney office, no ABN and no staff in Australia. Some Sydney agencies split the work offshore too: EB Pearls says its Kathmandu team does the engineering, and Designpluz lists an office in Coimbatore, India.

Credentials: you create the platform account and add us as a staff user you can remove. Payment account: in your business name, so payouts never pass through us. Staging: a working copy you can click through from the first week. Launch night: a low-traffic window you choose, with test orders either side of the switch.

Questions to put to any Sydney store quote before you sign, ours included

Ask each of these in writing, and expect a written answer.

10 questions to ask

  1. How many SKUs and variants does the price assume? Two hundred products in six sizes is 1,200 variants.
  2. How many unique templates? Each named, so a new layout later is a priced change, not a dispute.
  3. What migrates, and where is the 301 map? Products, customers and order history, with every old URL redirected.
  4. Whose name is on each account? Platform, domain, payment provider and Google accounts opened by your business, with the developer as a removable user.
  5. Which paid apps, at what monthly cost? Each listed with its price.
  6. Which payment provider and methods? Named in writing, paying out to your business bank account.
  7. Which delivery options and carriers? Each with its carrier confirmed.
  8. Are cart-recovery and post-purchase emails Spam Act compliant? Consent, clear sender details and a working unsubscribe; the basics are on our Sydney website page.
  9. What do support terms cover? Scope, length and monthly cost, in writing.
  10. Are surcharge lines gone? No card fee left in checkout, templates or terms.

Rebuilding a store that already ranks? Nobody can guarantee rankings through a rebuild, ourselves included. What protects them is mechanical: keep URLs where the platform allows, 301-redirect every old address, carry titles and alt text across, and watch Google Search Console for crawl errors after launch. Search work afterwards sits under SEO services, Shopping campaigns under Google Ads management. Selling from another city? See our Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth store pages.

Your store gets one figure inside the band below, worked out from your catalogue and written into the scope before you pay. As a guide to where you land: near the bottom is a new store on a paid theme with a small catalogue and standard checkout and delivery rates; the middle is a few hundred products with variants, custom-designed home and product pages and a move from an old store; the upper end is thousands of variants, trade logins with their own price lists, or custom delivery rules. How much does an ecommerce website cost in Sydney?

Among agencies ranking for ecommerce website design in Sydney, Spark Interact estimates A$10,000–A$50,000 for an agency-built store, Designpluz sells template stores at A$15,000–A$25,000, Click Click Media's standard tier is A$25,000–A$40,000 excl. GST and EB Pearls reaches A$80,000. Shopify-only builders start from A$1,500. Codingclave quotes one figure between A$2,400 and A$19,500 after seeing your catalogue. We're an overseas supplier not registered for Australian GST, so none is added; if your business is GST-registered, ask your accountant about reverse charge on imported services.

What is the cheapest way to get an ecommerce website?

Set one up yourself. A Shopify or Wix plan with a free theme suits a small catalogue if you have time to load products, write policies and test checkout; plan fees are compared on our national e-commerce page. Paying a builder makes sense once the do-it-yourself store starts costing sales: hundreds of variants, delivery zones, an old store with URLs to redirect, or a checkout that loses buyers.

Do I need a custom design, or is a template store enough?

For most Sydney shops a well-chosen theme is enough. Click Click Media itself says a template store costs a few thousand dollars, though its standard tier starts at A$25,000; the difference buys workshops, prototyping and longer schedules. A theme-based build at our price still gets your branding, templates set up for your catalogue, delivery rules and a tested checkout. Custom design pays off when product pages do unusual work, such as configurators or bundles.

Can my Sydney online store still add a card surcharge?

No. Since 1 October 2026, following the Reserve Bank's Conclusions Paper, businesses can't surcharge debit, prepaid or credit card payments on eftpos, Mastercard, Visa, American Express or UnionPay, online or in store. Search your checkout, cart notices, terms, invoices, receipts and email templates for leftover fee lines and remove them, then reprice products if your margin needs it. Fees on other payment methods are a question for your provider. Our quote form has a surcharge clean-up option for stores built before the change.

What are the top 5 e-commerce platforms in Australia?

By live store count on StoreLeads (updated 2 October 2026): Shopify with 138,183 Australian stores, WooCommerce with 78,036, Wix with 35,299, Squarespace with 19,085 and Ecwid with 4,291. Wix and Squarespace are site builders with shops attached. Of the dedicated commerce platforms, BigCommerce (2,159) and Magento (2,072) come next, down 12% and 28% on a year earlier. For most Sydney sellers the practical shortlist is Shopify or WooCommerce.

How long does it take to build an ecommerce website in Sydney?

Sydney agencies publish 8 to 28 weeks: 8–12 for a simple Designpluz store and up to 28 for its larger ones, 8–16 at EB Pearls and 14–18 at Click Click Media. Our range is 2–6 weeks, and the clock starts when your product list, photos, policies and payment account are with us. Without photos or a clean product list no store launches in two weeks, and we'll say on day one which item is holding the date.

Can the store connect to my POS, inventory or accounting system?

Usually, as a separately scoped line. Sydney retailers commonly run tools such as Lightspeed, Shopify POS, Cin7 or Unleashed for stock, and Xero or MYOB for accounts. Each connection is listed in your scope with what syncs and in which direction, and confirmed in writing for your business before you sign, because the method depends on your plan and the tool's own options. Xero and MYOB are covered on our integration page.

Is it safe to have an offshore team build my Sydney online store?

It is when the safeguards are on paper. Open the platform, domain and payment accounts in your business name and give us staff logins you can revoke. Card details stay with the payment provider, never the developer. Approve the build on staging, and agree one fixed AUD figure in writing before money changes hands; payment split and support terms are confirmed for your business before you sign. Calls start at 3:30pm Sydney time (2:30pm after daylight saving ends).
