Overview

Codingclave is a founder-led team in Lucknow, India, with no Canberra office, so you judge progress by test builds on your own phone. For comparison, the only fixed packages on a Canberra-ranking app page are Dr App's, A$3,300 to A$27,500 including GST, and Bark puts an ACT first version at $20,000–$50,000. Every source sits in the table below.

Quick answer

How much do app developers in Canberra charge?

By the hour, Bark says ACT mobile developers generally charge $110–$195, and most Canberra firms on Clutch that show a band sit at $100–$199, with several under $25 or at $25–$49. By the project, Dr App's three packages come to A$3,000, A$10,000 and A$25,000 before GST; Sunrise Technologies quotes $10,000–$50,000+ without a GST basis; and Bark puts an MVP at $20,000–$50,000, a mid-range app at $50,000–$150,000 and security-classified platforms above $250,000. Codingclave fixes one figure between A$6,900 and A$43,000, delivered in 4–12 weeks, excluding GST.

  • Cheapest printed package: A$3,300 inc GST, five screens (Dr App)
  • Typical ACT first version: $20,000–$50,000 (Bark)
  • Clutch's Canberra hourly bands: under $25 to $150–$199
  • Printed build times: about 1 month to 3–6 months
  • Ours: A$6,900–A$43,000 ex GST, 4–12 weeks, fixed before the build

What app developers in Canberra publish: price, GST basis and build time

If you searched app development cost in Canberra, this is what the ranking pages print, copied on 6 October 2026, plus Bark's ACT cost page. Only Dr App says its prices include GST, so only its packages are converted. Subz Designs' page refused the connection on 6 and 7 October and Airtasker's Canberra listing returned a bot check on 6 October, so neither has a row.

Divide by 1.1 only where a page says GST is included; otherwise ask whether 10% goes on top. Clutch shows a plain $ with no currency named, so treat its figures as unconverted, not AUD.

Costs none of these tables print: The Apple Developer Program is US$99 a year, charged in local currency when you enrol, and a Google Play developer account is a one-off US$25. Both sit in your name, so you pay them directly; check the figure each shows on the day you sign up.

Three Canberra briefs placed inside A$6,900–A$43,000, and why our floor sits above A$3,300

We quote one band, not packages, on a single Flutter or React Native codebase that produces both store apps, so later changes are made once. Native earns its higher price only when an app leans hard on device hardware, augmented reality or wearables. The briefs below are examples, not client projects.

  • Toward the floor: an ICON-backed first version for a startup

Sign-in, one core flow (a booking, a log entry, a request), push reminders and a small admin panel. One type of user, no payments, and the shorter end of 4–12 weeks. This is the version a matched ICON budget is most often stretched to cover.

  • Middle of the band: an inspection app for a government supplier’s crews

Field staff open the day's jobs and fill checklists with photos out of signal; the app syncs when back in range, and the office assigns work from an admin panel. It holds the supplier's own records, never agency or classified data (see government work).

  • Toward the top: bookings for a multi-clinic allied health group

A physio or allied health group with rooms in Belconnen and Woden wants one app that books either site: practitioner calendars, reminders, staff roles, payments through a gateway agreed at scoping, and patient details handled under ACT privacy rules (our health-records feature list covers those).

  • What a five-screen package lists, and what our floor adds

Dr App's Silver lists up to five screens, login, email messaging and a WordPress link in one cross-platform app; it doesn't mention an admin panel, push notifications or store submission. Our floor adds a back end with an admin panel, testing on iPhone and Android before store submission, and submission to both stores under your accounts. If five screens are enough, Silver may suit you better, and we'll say so.

  • What to send for an accurate quote

Your screens (a sketch is fine), user types, the systems the app must talk to (Xero, a booking platform, a payment gateway), a launch date, and whether your organisation already has Apple and Google developer accounts.

Release week on Canberra time: TestFlight at breakfast, App Review overnight

Our day is 10am–7pm India time, Monday to Saturday: 3:30pm–12:30am in Canberra until 4 April 2027, then 2:30–11:30pm (hours in full). In release week, Apple's reviewers and our team both work while Canberra sleeps, so work finished in our evening can be on your phone when your day starts.

  • Submitting for App Review in the Canberra evening

Apple says its App Review team reviews at least half of submissions in under 24 hours and 90% in under 48. We submit the release candidate after your sign-off call, so a decision often arrives overnight or the next day, not a week later.

  • When Apple rejects a build while you’re asleep

A rejection notice lands in App Store Connect with the guideline it cites. We read it when our day starts, fix or answer it, and resubmit the same Canberra evening. For a critical bug in a live app, Apple accepts expedited review requests that include the steps to reproduce it.

  • Starting the rollout on a Canberra morning

Set the approved version to release manually and you press the button yourself, at 8am Canberra time if you like. For updates, Apple's phased release reaches users with automatic updates over seven days (1% on day one, 100% by day seven) and can be paused for up to 30 days in total, so a problem can be caught before most users have it.

  • The honest limit

A message sent at 10am waits until 3:30pm Canberra time (2:30pm from April). If a live app needs fixing mid-morning, hire someone in your own time zone.

Six app-specific checks for any Canberra app developer

Region Canberra's list (April 2025: four firms with positive feedback and at least 4 out of 5 Google stars) and Clutch (more than 20 firms, most with no review or one) are fair places to shortlist. For ABN, review-count and team-location checks, see our Canberra software checklist. The six below are the ones only an app brings up.

  • 1. Store accounts in your organisation’s name

Enrol your organisation in the Apple Developer Program (Apple asks organisations for a D-U-N-S Number, so request one early) and open Google Play Console as an organisation. The developer is added as a team member. Moving an app out of a developer's personal account needs their cooperation.

  • 2. Who holds the signing keys and push credentials

Ask where the Android app signing key lives (with Play App Signing, inside your Google account) and who created the Apple push-notification key. Both should sit in accounts you control, or a future developer can't ship an update.

  • 3. Test access from the first milestone

You should be installing builds through TestFlight and Play internal testing from the first milestone, not seeing screenshots until launch week.

  • 4. Repository access and an IP assignment clause

The contract should assign code, designs and assets to your organisation and say when the repository is handed over; without that clause, paying may not make you the owner.

  • 5. A post-launch change rate in writing

Dr App's $80 an hour is the only change rate printed on a Canberra-ranking page. Get any developer's rate in writing before the build starts; store and OS updates keep coming.

  • 6. Fixed or hourly

Fixed pricing on an agreed screen list makes overruns the developer's cost; hourly billing makes them yours.

Our answers, in order: accounts in your organisation's name with us added as a team member; keys created inside those accounts; installable builds from the first milestone; IP assigned and the repository handed over; no published change rate, so post-launch pricing is agreed in writing before you sign; one fixed price for the agreed screens.

Choosing a mobile app development company in Canberra: freelancer, studio, interstate agency or offshore team

Apps for government agencies and their suppliers: what applies, and when we’re the wrong pick

Can we build apps for government agencies or their suppliers? For a supplier's commercial app holding no classified data, usually yes; for cleared, PROTECTED or onshore-only work, no. Settle these while the scope is still on paper.

  • Digital Service Standard 2.0: WCAG 2.2 AA on a phone

The DTA's Digital Service Standard 2.0 requires agencies to implement WCAG 2.2 level AA; public-facing services that existed before 1 July 2024 had to meet version 2.0 from 1 July 2025 or seek an exemption. In an app that means VoiceOver and TalkBack labels on every control, layouts that survive enlarged text, touch targets big enough to hit and checked contrast, all in the acceptance criteria.

  • Hosting certification for the app’s back end

The DTA's Hosting Certification Framework has two levels: Certified Assured, and the higher Certified Strategic, which lets government set ownership and control conditions. Ask the agency or head contractor, in writing, which level applies to your back end. With us, the provider and region for that back end are agreed in the contract, not assumed; see which cloud regions sit where.

  • Where a cleared Australian firm is the right hire

Security-cleared staff, PROTECTED data or onshore-only handling rule us out, since we have no staff or entity in Australia; this checklist explains the levels. Bark notes classified platforms can pass $250,000 depending on compliance requirements such as IRAP or the ASD Essential Eight.

  • Where an offshore team fits

Supplier apps with no government or classified data: an inspection app, a staff roster, a booking tool, a prototype for internal review. Check your head contract for offshore-access limits first.

Supplying a Canberra agency? Send Ashish the data classification on WhatsApp before a scope is written, and he'll say whether an offshore team can take the job.

Funding a first version: the ACT ICON grant arithmetic for Canberra startups

Can a Canberra startup use the ACT ICON grant? Innovation Connect (ICON) is ACT Government matched funding for Canberra-based startups and entrepreneurs developing an innovative product or service: for every dollar you invest between A$10,000 and A$30,000 the government adds the same, and time you put in can count as your side. It is delivered with the Canberra Innovation Network (CBRIN); see the ACT Government's grants page.

How the sums meet an app budget (our arithmetic):

  • Full match: A$30,000 of yours plus A$30,000 matched is A$60,000. A top-of-band A$43,000 build leaves A$17,000 for Apple and Google developer fees, support at A$80–A$240 a month and launch marketing.
  • Smallest match: A$10,000 plus A$10,000 is A$20,000, enough for a first version in the lower half of our band.
  • If your side is time: the cash may be close to the matched amount alone, so scope the first version to that.

Before you plan around ICON, confirm with CBRIN whether invoices from an overseas supplier count as eligible spend, and check current round dates. No grant is guaranteed.

For context only: the ACTivate Capital Fund, set up by the ACT Government with Epicorp, has A$10 million from the ACT Government and started investing from 2025. To trim a first version to what a grant covers, read how to build an MVP.

Budgeting an ICON-backed app? Ask Ashish for an ICON-funded MVP scope priced to fit the matched budget.

What Canberra’s largest employing industries might ask app developers to build

Jobs and Skills Australia's ACT Industry Profile (ABS Labour Force data, released April 2026) counts about 273,100 people employed in the ACT in February 2026, with five industries holding about 70% of those jobs. The app column is our suggestion, not JSA data.

Clutch’s app-developer list for Canberra, by suburb and hourly band (October 2026)

This is Clutch's app-developer category, not its software list. It shows more than 20 firms for Canberra, with ratings refreshed on 6 October 2026; the 20 our check recorded are grouped below by the suburb each gives. Figures keep Clutch's plain $.

What moves a quote from A$6,900 towards A$43,000: more screens and user roles, payments, offline sync, links to systems such as Xero, and how much the admin panel must do. Settled per project: the payment split and methods, any bug-fix period after launch, the point at which code passes to you, and the hosting region are confirmed in writing for your business before you sign.

Prices are in Australian dollars and do not include GST: Codingclave is an overseas (India-based) supplier and is not registered for Australian GST. If your business is GST-registered, check with your accountant whether the reverse-charge rules apply to imported services.

How it works

From a Canberra brief to both app stores in five steps

Start on WhatsApp
  1. Send the brief on WhatsApp

A sketch, a feature list or another developer's quote, then a video call to walk through it. Want a non-disclosure agreement first? Ask any developer, us included, to sign one before you share the detail.

  2. A fixed AUD quote with a screen list

Every screen, role and integration, with build weeks and one AUD figure: a scoped quote you can compare before anything is signed.

  3. Milestone builds to TestFlight and Play internal testing

Each milestone ends with a build you install on your own phone. How payments line up with those milestones is part of the contract terms listed under our prices.

  4. Store submission from your organisation's accounts

Apple Developer and Google Play accounts sit in your organisation's name from day one; we are added as a team member.

  5. Code and repository handover, then optional support

Source code and repository handed over, with the IP assigned in the contract. Support afterwards is optional at A$80–A$240 a month.

How much would it cost to have someone develop an app in Canberra?

Published Canberra figures start at Dr App's Silver package, A$3,300 including GST for five screens, with larger packages at A$11,000 and A$27,500. Bark puts an ACT first version (MVP) at $20,000–$50,000 and a mid-range app at $50,000–$150,000, with no GST basis given. Our fixed figure falls between A$6,900 and A$43,000, excluding GST. Send every developer the same screen list so the quotes compare.

Who are the best app developers in Canberra?

No ranking fits every app, so treat lists as a starting point. Region Canberra's April 2025 article names four firms with at least four Google stars; Clutch shows more than 20 Canberra app developers, most with no review or one. Shortlist from both, then compare who owns the store accounts and signing keys, when you get test builds, the IP clause, the post-launch change rate and the pricing model.

How much does it cost to develop an app in Australia compared with Canberra?

Published 2026 agency guides quote from about A$15,000 to A$300,000+ nationally, and most of that spread comes from hourly rates, as our national app cost page explains. In Canberra, Bark's ACT bands start at $20,000 for a first version at $110–$195 an hour, and Dr App's packages begin at A$3,300 including GST. Our A$6,900–A$43,000 band, ex GST, is the same in every city; scope moves a price far more than location.

How long does it take to build an app in Canberra?

Three Canberra-ranking pages print a timeline: Dr App about a month for five screens, three months for a job-management app and "more than 3-5 months" for native builds; Sunrise Technologies 8–14 weeks for a standard business app; 7 Pillars 3–6 months on average. Ours take 4–12 weeks from scope sign-off, plus store review: Apple says 90% of submissions are reviewed in under 48 hours.

Do Canberra app prices include GST, and does an overseas developer charge it?

Only Dr App's Canberra page says its prices include GST, so its A$3,300 package is A$3,000 before tax. Sunrise Technologies, Bark and Clutch print no basis, so ask each whether 10% is added. Codingclave's prices exclude GST because we are an overseas supplier not registered for Australian GST. If your business is GST-registered, ask your accountant whether the reverse-charge rules apply to imported services.

Do I need a Canberra-based app developer?

Only if the work needs people in the room, such as on-site workshops, or security-cleared staff and onshore data handling. Otherwise a written screen list, a video call each week and installable test builds do the job. With us, a 9-to-5 Canberra day overlaps our hours by 1.5 hours during daylight saving and 2.5 hours from 4 April 2027, and work finished in our evening is waiting when your morning starts.

How do I protect my app idea and keep control of the store accounts?

Ask for a non-disclosure agreement before sharing the detail. Check that the contract assigns code, designs and assets to your organisation and says when the repository is handed over. Open the Apple Developer and Google Play accounts in your organisation's name, add the developer as a team member, and keep the signing keys inside those accounts. If you part ways, you remove one login and keep everything.

Can I use the ACT Innovation Connect grant to pay an app developer?

Possibly. ICON matches every dollar a Canberra-based startup invests between A$10,000 and A$30,000, time can count as your side, and it is delivered with CBRIN. Developing an innovative product is what it funds, but ask CBRIN in writing whether developer invoices count as eligible spend, including an overseas supplier's such as ours, and check that a round is open before you plan around it.
