Overview

We're founder-led and work remotely from Lucknow, India, with no Canberra office; the minimum term and notice period are set out in writing for your business before you sign. For comparison, printed Canberra floors begin at $825 a month (canberraseo.au), Firewire starts at $2,500 + GST on a three-month minimum, Otto Media asks for six months plus an exit fee, and most page-one agencies show no price.

Quick answer

How much does an SEO agency in Canberra cost per month?

Published Canberra SEO retainers start between $825 and $2,500 a month (checked 7 October 2026), and most page-one agencies print no figure at all. canberraseo.au lists from $825 with no GST basis shown. Otto Media starts at $1,000 on a six-month minimum with an early-cancellation fee. Paperstack quotes about $1,500–$2,000 for B2B programs, with no lock-in. Firewire begins at $2,500 + GST on three months, then rolls monthly. The highest starting price printed is Otto's Accelerator plan, from $5,000. Our own band is A$990–A$9,800 a month, and no GST is added to our invoice.

  • Lowest printed floor: $825 a month, canberraseo.au
  • Firewire's $2,500 + GST is $2,750 invoiced; GST-registered buyers usually claim the $250 back
  • Minimum terms seen: none, three months or six months
  • Five of the eight page-one agency pages print no price

Canberra SEO providers side by side: price, GST, minimum term and where the work is run

Google showed nine results for "seo agency canberra" on 6 October 2026: eight agency pages and one directory. We re-read each on 7 October and added canberraseo.au, just off page one, and Paperstack, a Gold Coast and Melbourne agency that runs ACT accounts remotely. Figures are copied as printed; "not stated" means the page was silent. Zib Digital's page sat behind a bot check, so only its head office is recorded.

Reading a "best SEO companies" list. The Manifest's Canberra directory, at #6, refused our request. Before trusting any ranked list, ask whether firms paid to be featured, what decides the order, and whether price, GST basis and minimum term are shown.

An estimate, not an offer. whatsthedamage.com.au, a lead-generation site that sells Canberra enquiries to agencies, estimates $800–$1,500 a month for single-area local SEO and $1,500–$3,500 for a typical small business.

SEO consultant, national agency or remote team: which suits a Canberra business

Autocomplete for this search splits between hiring a firm (agency, company, services) and hiring a person (consultant, specialist, expert). Whatever the label, three things change between set-ups: who you speak to, the lowest price on offer and how long you're committed.

Canberra searches split two ways: capability queries and suburb queries

A buyer at a federal department, or at a prime contractor bidding for one, searches for a capability plus "Canberra" or "ACT". A household searches for a trade and a suburb. Which pattern your customers follow decides whether the first dollars go into your website or your Business Profile. The ACT had 37,785 trading businesses at 30 June 2026 (ABS); the industry split below runs to June 2025.

Across the border. Queanbeyan-Palerang, on the NSW side, held another 5,742 businesses at June 2025, 1,374 of them in construction, so a service area that stops at the ACT line gives searches away. The "fix first" column is our planning note, not ABS data.

Getting into the Canberra map pack: what Google lets you change, and what no agency can

The pinned results above the organic list come from Business Profiles, ranked mainly on relevance, distance and prominence (Google's summary line now says "popularity"). Google's help page leaves no room for doubt: "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." Here is how that plays out in Canberra.

  • Relevance: the part you can work on

Start with a verified profile at an address you actually trade from, or a service area if you travel to customers. Then come accurate primary and secondary categories, a true services list, and site pages that describe those services in the same words. A Woden clinic filed under one broad category can miss searches for the treatments it offers.

  • Distance is set by where the searcher stands

Google measures distance from the person searching, or the place named in the search. A Gungahlin searcher looking for a physio tends to see nearer clinics first, and no agency can change that.

  • Prominence: reviews and Canberra links

Google says prominence draws on how many websites link to a business and how many reviews it has. Canberra links from associations, chambers and local media are earned, so placements can't be promised. Ask all customers for reviews, not a hand-picked few.

  • Addresses Google refuses

Virtual offices, P.O. boxes, remote mailboxes and unstaffed co-working desks are ineligible. A business that travels to customers gets one profile and a service area, so separate profiles for Belconnen, Woden and Gungahlin break the rules rather than widen your reach.

  • Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and Googong across the border

If you genuinely take jobs in these NSW suburbs, add them to your one profile's service area and back them with pages about that work. Never add a borrowed Queanbeyan address to win a pin.

  • We work inside your profile, not ours

We don't have a Canberra address and won't invent one for you either. Everything we do on Maps happens inside the profile you own and control.

Want to know what's holding your profile back? WhatsApp your URL, suburb and top three services and you'll get three fixes back, each tied to a page or a profile field.

What A$990–A$9,800 a month buys for four kinds of Canberra business

A price band without a task list tells you little, so here are four scopes we would typically plan in Canberra. Where yours lands is set in writing after a read-only look at your site; the positions below are a guide, not a quote.

A first month for a Gungahlin electrician, week by week

A plan, not a reported result.

  • Week 1: read-only review of Search Console and GA4; crawl problems listed by URL.
  • Week 2: profile categories and service area (Gungahlin, Belconnen, Queanbeyan) corrected.
  • Week 3: the main service page rewritten, live after your sign-off.
  • Week 4: review link and call tracking set up; task list sent with every URL touched.
Example Canberra SEO scopes and their monthly tasks (planning guide, not a quote)
BusinessScopeTypical monthly tasksPosition in our band
Gungahlin or Tuggeranong tradieOne profile with a service area reaching Queanbeyan; three service pagesProfile kept current, one service page improved, review requests, call tracking checkedLower end
Woden or Belconnen allied health clinicPractitioner and treatment pages, booking path, categoriesOne practitioner or treatment page, booking tracking, profile hours and photosLower to middle
Barton or Deakin consultancy selling to governmentCapability pages, past-performance summariesOne capability page written or rebuilt, internal links, download and form trackingMiddle
Fyshwick retailer with an online catalogueCategory and product templates, click-and-collect pagesCategory fixes, structured-data checks, crawl clean-up, one category written upMiddle to upper

The top of the band covers several service areas, large catalogues and retainers that add Google Ads management. Ad spend always stays separate and goes from you to Google.

Hiring SEO from outside Canberra: the controls that make remote work checkable

canberraseo.au warns its readers about "very cheap SEO services (normally offered from outside Australia)". It applies to us: we work from Lucknow, India. Yet five of the eight page-one agencies, all headquartered in Victoria or New South Wales, also run their Canberra work from another city, so the useful questions are who does the work, who you talk to and who holds the accounts.

Three months, six months or none: reading the contract on a Canberra SEO proposal

Firewire starts with three months, then rolls monthly. Otto Media asks for six months, with an early-cancellation fee on its Traditional plans. RGC and Paperstack say no lock-in, canberraseo.au promises "month-to-month flexibility" but publishes no terms, and the rest say nothing.

Since 9 November 2023, proposing, using or relying on unfair terms in a standard-form contract with a small business (fewer than 100 employees or under A$10 million annual turnover) has been prohibited, for contracts entered into, renewed or varied from that date (ACCC). This is general information, not legal advice, and we make no claim about how it applies to a supplier based overseas.

  • Auto-renewal and notice period

A minimum term that renews itself unless you cancel inside a narrow window is a lock-in by another route. Ask whether it renews automatically and how many days' notice ends it.

  • Exit fees and what triggers them

A proposal should give the amount or formula of any early-exit fee, and say what counts as leaving: cancelling, pausing or cutting the scope.

  • Who owns content, pages and reports after you leave

Pages, articles and reports you paid for should stay yours, written into a clause rather than promised in an email.

  • Account access on exit

Search Console, GA4 and the Business Profile should already be in your name, with the provider added as a user. Leaving then means removing a user, not negotiating a handover.

  • Billing cadence

Billing one month at a time limits your exposure to a single month. Ask how invoices are raised and in what currency.

  • What a "free audit" includes

canberraseo.au and JSLmedia give no scope for their free audits, while Otto Media prices its Deep Dive audit from $2,550. Ask for a written list of problems with URLs, not a sales call, and grant read-only access only.

Got a proposal or contract in front of you? Send the proposal on WhatsApp for a clause-by-clause read of the term, renewal, exit and ownership wording.

How long SEO takes in Canberra, in the providers’ own words, and why nobody can promise page one

  • What Canberra providers publish

Firewire says technical and long-tail wins usually show within 8 to 14 weeks, with competitive terms taking 6 to 9 months. StudioHawk and canberraseo.au both give 3 to 6 months, and canberraseo.au allows 6 to 12 for competitive industries. Each is the provider's own estimate, not a promise to you.

  • Google’s position on guarantees

Google's guide to hiring an SEO puts it in one line: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." seoincanberra.com.au's FAQ also calls guaranteed results impossible. Codingclave doesn't guarantee rankings or leads, and no other provider can either.

  • Is it still worth it in 2026?

For most Canberra businesses whose customers search before they buy, yes. StatCounter puts Google at 87.9% of Australian searches in September 2026, and the ACT recorded 6,605 business entries and 5,564 exits in 2025–26, a net gain of 789 (2.1%) to 37,785. Ask on WhatsApp

How much should a small business in Canberra spend on SEO each month?

Printed Canberra starting prices are $825 a month at canberraseo.au, $1,000 at Otto Media (six-month minimum) and about $1,500 for Paperstack's B2B programs. whatsthedamage.com.au, which sells leads to agencies, estimates $800–$1,500 for single-area local work. Our band begins at A$990. A sensible first scope is the Business Profile plus three strong service pages, widened once enquiries show which searches pay.

What's included in an SEO package in Canberra?

Most Canberra pages list service categories (technical, on-page, local, links) rather than the tasks you'll get each month. Ask in writing for itemised monthly deliverables, whose name the Search Console, GA4 and profile accounts sit in, and what any audit covers. Audits range from free with no stated scope to Otto Media's Deep Dive, from $2,550. Our report lists each task with its URL and date.

Should I hire an SEO consultant or an SEO agency in Canberra?

A solo consultant such as Otto Media gives you the founder directly, though a consultant-led practice can have less capacity, and its plans carry a six-month minimum. A national agency brings a team, from $2,500 + GST at Firewire; ask who does the work. Paperstack, a remote agency, sits around $1,500–$2,000 with no lock-in. With us you deal with Ashish, within A$990–A$9,800 a month, and the time difference is the trade-off.

Do Canberra SEO prices include GST?

It depends on the provider, so check every quote. Firewire prints $2,500 + GST, or $2,750 invoiced, and GST-registered businesses can usually claim the $250 back. canberraseo.au and Paperstack state no GST basis, and Otto Media shows + GST on its Foundational plans only. Codingclave is an overseas supplier not registered for Australian GST, so none is added to our invoice; ask your accountant whether reverse-charge rules apply to you.

Who is the best SEO agency in Canberra?

There is no neutral answer, and a directory ranking is only as useful as the criteria behind it. Judge each shortlisted provider on things you can check: a published or written price, the minimum term and exit cost, where the work is done and by whom, whether accounts stay in your name, and an itemised monthly report. Our comparison table applies those tests to ten providers as of 7 October 2026.

Can a Canberra SEO company guarantee page one rankings?

No. Google's own guide to hiring an SEO states that no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and warns against anyone claiming a special relationship with Google. seoincanberra.com.au says the same in its FAQ. A provider can commit to the work itself: named fixes, published pages and an itemised monthly report. Treat any ranking guarantee as a warning sign.

Do Canberra SEO agencies lock you into a contract?

Some do. Firewire asks for three months before going monthly; Otto Media asks for six, with an early-cancellation fee on its Traditional plans. RGC and Paperstack state no lock-in, and canberraseo.au describes its agreements as flexible and month to month. The ACCC notes that unfair terms in standard-form small-business contracts have been prohibited since 9 November 2023 (general information, not legal advice). Our minimum term and notice period are confirmed in writing for your business before you sign.

Do I need an SEO agency based in Canberra?

Not necessarily. What decides the outcome is who does the work, who you speak to and who controls the accounts. Ask for Search Console, GA4 and your Business Profile to stay in your name, read-only access until a scope is signed, approval before any change goes live, and a monthly list of URLs you can check.
