WATI vs Gupshup: which one should you pick in 2026?

Pick WATI if a non-technical marketing or support team needs a shared WhatsApp inbox, broadcasts and a no-code chatbot this week. Pick Gupshup if you have developers, want the lowest per-message fee (from $0.001 on self-serve), or need SMS and RCS from the same vendor. If your volume is low or seasonal and nobody can build on an API, a pay-per-use tool may suit you better than either.

Quick answer:

  • Cheapest per message: Gupshup self-serve. It adds a fee from $0.001 (about ₹0.09) to Meta's rate, so a marketing message in India costs about ₹0.95, ex-GST.
  • Easiest for a non-technical team: WATI. Growth is ₹2,999 a month, or ₹2,199 billed annually, with a 7-day free trial.
  • At 20,000 marketing messages a month: about ₹19,000 on Gupshup self-serve against ₹27,100–₹33,900 on WATI Pro, ex-GST.
  • At 1 lakh+ messages, or with SMS and OTPs in the mix: Gupshup, if someone can own the integration.
  • Low or seasonal volume with no developer: a pay-per-use tool at about ₹1.06 per marketing message and no subscription. PayPerWA, our own product, is one example.

Pros and cons at a glance

WATI

  • Pro: team inbox, broadcasts, no-code bots and WhatsApp Flows ready on day one
  • Pro: native Shopify, HubSpot, Salesforce and Zoho CRM connections
  • Con: subscription plus a per-message margin that WATI does not publish
  • Con: Growth stops at 3 users and 15,000 broadcasts a month, with no webhooks

Gupshup

  • Pro: lowest published per-message fee, with no subscription on self-serve
  • Pro: SMS, RCS and other channels besides WhatsApp from one vendor
  • Con: the self-serve product assumes someone can work with an API
  • Con: no public rate card for enterprise plans, so you have to go through sales

The real difference: a team inbox you log into vs an API you build on

WATI is software your team logs into. Connect your number and you get a shared inbox for WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and a web widget, plus broadcasts, an automation builder and catalogue tools.

Gupshup is a communications platform (CPaaS) first. Its self-serve WhatsApp product is API access on a prepaid wallet. It also sells SMS, RCS and other channels, and its larger deals are negotiated with sales.

So the marketing head wants WATI's inbox live by Monday, and the developer wants to build on Gupshup and skip the markup. The six questions further down settle it.

I'm Ashish Sharma, founder of Codingclave. We sell a WhatsApp tool too (PayPerWA), so I flag it wherever it appears and show all the maths.

How each one charges in 2026

How WATI charges: a plan plus per-message rates

WATI charges a monthly plan and bills every message at its own rate for each country and category. In USD, Growth is $49 and Pro is $99 a month on annual billing. On 30 September 2026 Business showed $299 annually ($359 monthly), but other checks that month showed different figures, so confirm it on WATI's pricing page.

India visitors see separate INR pricing. A browser check from India on 30 September 2026 showed Growth ₹2,999, Pro ₹6,499 and Business ₹18,499 a month on monthly billing, or ₹2,199, ₹4,899 and ₹14,799 billed annually. Extra users cost ₹1,299 a month on Pro and ₹2,199 on Business. WATI's prices vary by visitor location, and our June 2026 audit shows older figures, so confirm on the pricing page.

Growth includes 3 users with no add-ons and caps broadcasts at 15,000 a month. We read that as messages, not campaigns; confirm in the trial. For the plan table and hidden costs, see our WATI pricing audit for India.

How Gupshup charges: a prepaid wallet from $0.001 per message

On self-serve you pay Meta's fee "at actuals" plus a Gupshup fee as low as $0.001 per message. There is no subscription, setup fee or volume commitment (Gupshup self-serve WhatsApp). Gupshup's support documentation says the fee applies to both template and session messages. At about ₹88 to the dollar that is ₹0.09; your wallet shows the actual currency and rate.

Enterprise pricing is sales-led, with no public rate card. For wallet mechanics and the self-serve vs enterprise split, read our Gupshup WhatsApp pricing audit.

What Meta charges underneath both

The Meta fee is the same whichever provider you use. These are the rules that change the maths, from Meta's WhatsApp pricing documentation:

  • Meta has billed per message since 1 July 2025. Any quote based on a "24-hour conversation" is out of date.
  • Until 30 September 2026, non-template replies and utility templates inside an open customer-service window were free. From 1 October 2026, Meta's non-template pricing page charges both at the utility rate, about ₹0.115 in India. Chats started from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad or Page button still get a free 72-hour window.
  • The rates used in this post are marketing ₹0.86 and utility/authentication ₹0.13 per message, plus 18% GST.
  • Third-party readings of the July 2026 INR card give ₹0.8631 and ₹0.115; India's volume tiers lower utility and authentication further.
  • INR billing began on 1 January 2026. Eligible businesses must switch to INR by 31 December 2026.
  • Meta raised India's authentication-international rate in 2026. OTP senders should check the current rate card.

Last verified: September 2026.

Cost at 4 volumes: 2,000 to 1 lakh marketing messages a month

Assumptions, so you can redo the maths with your own numbers:

  • Every message is a marketing template to an Indian number at ₹0.86.
  • Gupshup self-serve: ₹0.86 + ₹0.09 = ₹0.95 per message, using the lowest advertised fee.
  • WATI: ₹1.03–₹1.37 per message. WATI shows its rate card only inside the account. We use the range between the two estimates on our own site (about 20% over Meta, and ₹0.51 over Meta) as a stress test. Plan prices are WATI's INR monthly-billing prices seen on 30 September 2026.
  • PayPerWA (ours): ₹0.20 + ₹0.86 = ₹1.06 per message.
  • All figures exclude GST and any developer or agency time.
Marketing messages a month WATI Gupshup self-serve PayPerWA (ours)
2,000 ₹5,059–₹5,739 ₹1,900 ₹2,120
5,000 ₹8,149–₹9,849 ₹4,750 ₹5,300
20,000 ₹27,099–₹33,899 ₹19,000 ₹21,200
1,00,000 ₹1,09,499–₹1,43,499 ₹95,000 ₹1,06,000
Monthly subscription ₹2,999–₹6,499 ₹0 ₹0
Inbox and no-code bot Included Bot Studio; inbox varies Included

Last verified: September 2026. The WATI figures are Growth (₹2,999) at 2,000 and 5,000 messages and Pro (₹6,499) at 20,000 and 1 lakh, plus messages. Annual billing lowers the plan part by ₹800–₹1,600 a month. With 18% GST, the 20,000 row becomes about ₹32,000–₹40,000 on WATI, ₹22,400 on Gupshup and ₹25,000 on PayPerWA.

What the table tells you:

  • Gupshup self-serve has the lowest fees at every volume. At 1 lakh a month it is about ₹14,500–₹48,500 cheaper than WATI Pro.
  • At 20,000 messages you need WATI Pro, because Growth caps broadcasts at 15,000. That jump alone adds ₹3,500 a month.

A realistic mixed month

A D2C brand with 5 agents sends, in one month, under the rules that applied until 30 September 2026:

  • 10,000 marketing templates
  • 5,000 utility templates, half of them inside an open window (then free on Meta) and half outside at ₹0.13
  • 10,000 support replies inside the window (then free on Meta)

That adds up to 25,000 messages, of which Meta charges for 12,500. Meta's total is ₹8,925.

Cost line WATI Pro Gupshup self-serve PayPerWA (ours)
Meta charges Inside WATI's rates ₹8,925 ₹8,925
Message and platform fees ₹10,700–₹15,300 (Meta + margin) ₹2,250 on all 25,000 ₹5,000 on all 25,000
Subscription ₹6,499 ₹0 ₹0
Total, ex-GST ₹17,199–₹21,799 ₹11,175 ₹13,925

From 1 October 2026 the 10,000 replies and 2,500 in-window utility templates are billed by Meta at about ₹0.115 each, adding roughly ₹1,440 to every column before any provider margin on them. The ranking doesn't change.

Assumptions:

  • WATI: Pro, because Growth allows only 3 users. Its per-message margin is applied to utility templates as well, which makes them about ₹0.16–₹0.64 each. Free in-window replies are assumed to cost nothing, so confirm both points in your WATI rate card.
  • PayPerWA: the ₹0.20 fee is applied to every message sent, which is the conservative case.

Gupshup still costs least, but with this many in-window replies its lead over WATI narrows to about ₹6,000–₹10,600 a month.

What the tables don't show

  • Developer time on Gupshup. See the break-even under question 3 below.
  • Seats on WATI. A 6-agent team needs Pro plus one extra user at ₹1,299 a month ($24 on the USD page). Extra users on Business cost ₹2,199 ($69) each.
  • Prepaid wallets. Gupshup and PayPerWA are prepaid, so set a low-balance alert before big campaigns.
  • Meta's messaging limits. New numbers can reach only a limited number of customers a day, rising as quality holds. This applies on both providers, so no 1 lakh blast in week one.

Onboarding, the green tick and time to go live

Both providers need the same Meta pieces: a verified Meta business portfolio, a phone number, an approved display name and approved templates.

  • WATI: sign up, start the trial and connect your number from the dashboard. The connection usually takes hours.
  • Gupshup self-serve: create an account, fund the wallet and register the number. Going live depends on how quickly your developer wires the API into your systems.
  • Gupshup enterprise: allow time for commercial talks and a scoped implementation.

The real delays usually come from Meta: business verification (documents must match your legal name and website), display-name review and template rejections.

Keeping the WhatsApp Business app. Meta now offers "coexistence" onboarding, which lets some numbers stay on the WhatsApp Business app while also connecting to the API. It has feature limits and not every provider supports it, so ask each vendor about Indian numbers.

The green tick. Meta decides who gets the verified badge. Neither provider can guarantee it, and you do not need it to send messages.

Before you sign up with either, have these ready:

  • The same business name on your GST certificate, website and Meta business portfolio
  • A number you control, and a decision on coexistence
  • Five to ten templates drafted: order update, OTP, offer and reminder
  • An opt-in point on your website or checkout, with records saved

Marketer vs developer: 6 questions that settle it

  1. Who replies to customers, and where?
    • Lean WATI: people reply every day and you have no helpdesk.
    • Lean Gupshup: replies go into an existing CRM or helpdesk, or a bot handles most of them.
  2. Who owns the integration next year, not just next week?
    • Lean WATI: nobody on staff.
    • Lean Gupshup: a named developer with time for template changes, failed webhooks and Meta API updates.
  3. What will your volume be in 6 months?
    • Lean WATI: under 20,000 messages a month.
    • Lean Gupshup: 1 lakh+, where ₹14,500–₹48,500 a month is at stake.
  4. Do you need SMS, OTPs or RCS too?
  5. What must it connect to?
    • Lean WATI: Shopify, HubSpot, Zoho or Salesforce.
    • Lean Gupshup: a custom ERP, core banking system or your own app.
  6. How does finance want to pay?
    • Lean WATI: a predictable monthly plan.
    • Lean Gupshup: pure usage from a prepaid wallet.

The break-even on question 3

The developer's case holds only if fee savings repay the build. Labelled assumptions, not a quote:

  • A minimum Gupshup self-serve setup covers sending templates, receiving webhooks, storing opt-ins and a basic reply screen. We plan about 2–4 weeks of one experienced developer's time for that.
  • At a fully loaded cost of ₹1,00,000 a month for that developer, the build costs roughly ₹50,000–₹1,00,000, plus ongoing upkeep.
  • At 2,000 messages a month you save ₹3,150–₹3,850 a month, so payback takes 13–32 months. WATI wins.
  • At 20,000 messages a month you save ₹8,100–₹14,900 a month, so payback takes about 3–12 months. It depends on how long you will stay.
  • At 1 lakh messages a month you save ₹14,500–₹48,500 a month, so payback takes about 1–7 months. Gupshup wins, provided someone maintains the build.

If your answers are mixed, question 2 decides it: an unmaintained Gupshup integration costs more than WATI's margin. For outsourced bot budgets, see chatbot development cost.

Running both is a valid answer. Some teams use WATI for marketing and support, and Gupshup for OTPs and alerts. Remember that one number can be connected to only one provider at a time, so you will need two numbers.

Who should choose WATI

Your situation Why WATI fits Watch out for
Up to 3 people replying, fewer than 15,000 broadcasts Growth covers it with no code A 4th user or more volume means Pro
Support team of 4–8 agents Pro includes 5 users Seat costs and message margin grow together
Shopify store Catalog tools and a Shopify add-on Per-message rates at campaign volume
Lead forms and bookings in chat WhatsApp Flows builder on Pro Not available on Growth
HubSpot, Zoho or Salesforce CRM Native connections by plan Salesforce needs Business

Who should not choose WATI: developer-led teams that want full API control, businesses sending 1 lakh+ marketing messages a month on thin margins, and anyone whose main need is SMS or OTP delivery. If you like the no-code approach but want to compare similar tools, see WATI vs Interakt vs AiSensy.

Who should choose Gupshup

  • Teams with developers, in-house or through a partner, who want WhatsApp inside their own app, CRM or core systems.
  • Multichannel senders who already send SMS OTPs and want RCS and WhatsApp through one contract.
  • High-volume senders. At 1 lakh+ messages a month, the per-message gap outweighs any subscription.
  • Banks, insurers and lenders negotiating SLAs and security reviews anyway; ask for compliance and data-handling documents during procurement.

Who should not choose Gupshup: a two-person marketing team with no developer expecting a finished multi-agent inbox from self-serve. You would pay for that gap in helpdesk fees or agency hours.

When neither fits: pay-per-use without a subscription

PayPerWA is our product, so weigh this section with that in mind and check the numbers.

Some businesses have no developer for Gupshup self-serve and volume too uneven for ₹2,999–₹6,499 a month on WATI, such as a coaching institute at admission season or a D2C brand with two big sales a year.

PayPerWA is built for that case:

  • ₹0.20 per message plus Meta's charges, which is about ₹1.06 per marketing message all-in
  • No monthly subscription, no setup fee and no lock-in
  • Failed messages are refunded to your wallet
  • Bulk campaigns, a 2-way team inbox, a drag-and-drop chatbot builder, CSV import and delivery/read tracking, all on Meta's official WhatsApp Cloud API

Gupshup self-serve is cheaper per message (₹0.95 against ₹1.06), so with a developer its fee wins. PayPerWA is WhatsApp-only, so for SMS or RCS, Gupshup fits better. For a direct comparison with WATI, see PayPerWA vs WATI.

Switching later: number, templates and opt-ins

General guidance; confirm details with both vendors:

  • Number: Meta supports moving a number between providers. You usually have to turn off two-step verification first, so ask the new provider for exact steps.
  • Templates: keep a copy of every approved template's text, as templates may need re-approval under the new account.
  • Opt-ins: export contacts and consent records regularly, including when and how each person opted in.
  • Bots and history: chatbot flows, automations and inbox history generally do not transfer. Budget time to rebuild them.
  • Money: check refund terms before you pay for an annual plan or load a large wallet balance.

Your next step: test the choice against your real numbers

Frequently asked questions

On fees alone, Gupshup self-serve is cheaper at every volume. It adds a Gupshup fee from $0.001 (about ₹0.09) to Meta's rate and charges no subscription. For marketing templates, ex-GST, that is about ₹4,750 at 5,000 messages, ₹19,000 at 20,000 and ₹95,000 at 1 lakh. WATI comes to roughly ₹8,150–₹9,850, ₹27,100–₹33,900 and ₹1.09–₹1.43 lakh, using its monthly plan price plus an estimated per-message rate. The Gupshup figures leave out the developer time or inbox tool you will probably need.

WATI bills each message at its own rate by country and category and does not publish its margin over Meta. Estimates on our site range from about 20% to about ₹0.51 over Meta's ₹0.86 marketing rate, so read the rate card inside your WATI account before you budget. Gupshup publishes its self-serve fee: from $0.001 per message, charged on top of Meta's fee from a prepaid wallet. Gupshup's support documentation says the fee applies to session messages as well as templates. Enterprise pricing is quoted by Gupshup's sales team.

For some jobs, yes. Gupshup's console includes Bot Studio, a drag-and-drop bot builder with hand-over to live agents, so a marketer can build simple journeys without code. Connecting your CRM, storing opt-ins, handling delivery webhooks and giving 5–10 agents a shared place to reply usually still needs a developer, a partner or Gupshup's enterprise tools. If nobody on your team will own that work, WATI or a no-code pay-per-use tool is the more practical choice for day-to-day conversations.

No. WATI bills monthly, quarterly or annually. Monthly costs more: on WATI's INR page, Growth was ₹2,999 a month on monthly billing against ₹2,199 on annual billing when we checked on 30 September 2026. WATI has a 7-day free trial, and India-based customers can start on a ₹999 one-time Pay-As-You-Go plan that includes ₹999 of message credits for three months. Gupshup's self-serve tier has no subscription, so there is nothing to trial. You load a prepaid wallet and pay only for messages sent, which means a small test costs very little.

If you have developers and already send OTPs by SMS, Gupshup can put SMS, RCS and WhatsApp with one vendor, which simplifies contracts and billing. Running both is also common: Gupshup for OTP and alert traffic, WATI for marketing and support conversations. One WhatsApp number can be connected to only one provider at a time, though, so a split setup needs two numbers. WhatsApp authentication messages are not free in India, so compare their cost against SMS for each use case.

For off-the-shelf tools, WATI is easier. It has a Shopify add-on at $4.99 a month, HubSpot on Pro, Salesforce on Business and a Zoho CRM plugin that needs Zoho CRM Professional or higher. Gupshup works with almost anything through its API, but a developer or partner builds and maintains the connection. For a custom CRM, ERP or core banking system, Gupshup's API depth is the stronger fit. WATI's API and webhooks are limited below the Business plan.
