What I have learnt selling websites in Gorakhpur

Checked

I have sold websites into Gorakhpur from Lucknow for years, and the city has changed under my feet. Here is who buys, what they need, and when to go local instead.

Who is buying a website in Gorakhpur right now

Three groups keep coming back.

GIDA manufacturers. The Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority dates from 30 November 1989, but most of the growth is recent. Organiser reported in September 2026 that more than 500 industries now run in Gorakhpur, with roughly 50,000 jobs, and that in 2025-26 alone GIDA allotted 182 acres to 54 new units carrying Rs 5,800 crore of proposed investment. The names are serious: PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, Gyan Dairy, APL Apollo Tubes, Ankur Udyog. The big plants bring their own IT. The ancillary units making plastics, packaging and food ingredients do not, and they are the ones asking me for a catalogue site and a dealer enquiry form. The revived HURL fertiliser plant (about Rs 8,600 crore, 12.7 lakh tonnes of neem-coated urea a year) has pulled in suppliers who need the same.

Old-city traders. Golghar is still where the busy shops are. These owners rarely want e-commerce. They want to be found on Google by someone travelling in from Deoria, Kushinagar or Maharajganj, and they want the phone to ring.

Schools, coaching centres and colleges. The page above already lists BRD Medical College and MMMUT, so one note only: admissions peak March to July, and a site that is not live by February has missed the year.

Facts about the place that change the brief

  • Gorakhpur is bigger than its 2011 number. The census counted 673,446 people in the city. Since then 31 villages were merged, the municipal area went from 145.5 to 226.6 sq km, and on 22 November 2021 the state declared Gorakhpur a metropolis, a region of about 2.5 million people across 1,041 sq km. Your "local" customer now lives in Taramandal or Rapti Nagar, not just the old wards.
  • Nepal is a real market, not a footnote. Sonauli is 90 km away, and the 79.5 km four-lane Gorakhpur-Sonauli highway was about 89 percent complete as of July 2026, per The Tribune. Nautanwa market already draws shoppers from Nepal. If you sell electronics, garments or medical supplies, show rupee prices, use WhatsApp, and expect Hindi.
  • Terracotta is the one Gorakhpur craft that sells online. Gorakhpur Terracotta got its GI tag in 2019-20 and is the district's ODOP product. The potters sit in Aurangabad village in Bhathat block, now being developed as a Special Tourist Village. Clay breaks in transit, so I build these sellers an Instagram-first storefront with order-on-WhatsApp instead of a full cart.
  • Gita Press shows what trust looks like here. Founded 1923, over 417 million books in 14 languages, Gandhi Peace Prize 2021. Buyers here trust a long record and a plain presentation: a clear address, a real phone number and a photo of the owner beat a startup-style landing page.
  • STPI arrived in March 2026. The 71st STPI centre opened at GIDA on 14,500 sq m with plug-and-play offices and an incubation floor, aiming at 1,500 to 2,000 direct jobs in the first phase. Local developer talent will grow from here; today it is thin.

Compliance I get asked about

Shops and traders need a trade licence from Gorakhpur Nagar Nigam. It is a live service on the state e-NagarSewa portal, also reachable through Nivesh Mitra. I cannot file it for you, but I put the licence number, GSTIN and registered address in the footer, because distributors and payment gateways check for exactly that.

Local vendor or us

Gorakhpur has freelancers and small shops; the ones I get compared against usually quote a WordPress template under Rs 10,000. Some are good. Choose local if you want someone in your shop for an afternoon and that template is enough. Choose us if you need a Hindi and English site that loads fast on a Jio phone in Kushinagar, a payment or ERP integration, or someone who still answers in year three. We work it over WhatsApp and video, with a design preview in your browser within three days, same time zone, same-afternoon fixes.

Questions we get from What I have learnt selling websites in Gorakhpur buyers

I run a unit in GIDA and my buyers are distributors in Bihar and Nepal. Do I need a website or is a brochure PDF enough?
If you sell to distributors, a website is your catalogue that never goes out of date. I build GIDA manufacturers a simple site with a product list, specs as downloadable PDFs, a dealer enquiry form that lands on WhatsApp, and a Hindi toggle because many Bihar and Terai buyers prefer it. Keep it to five or six pages; that is Rs 25,000 to 40,000 with us. Add a dealer login later only if you actually have repeat orders worth tracking. I would not spend on e-commerce for B2B tube, plastic or dairy products; nobody in that chain pays by card online.
My shop is in Golghar. Half my customers are walk-ins from Deoria, Maharajganj and across the Sonauli border. What should the site do?
For a Golghar retailer the website's real job is to win the Google search someone does on the bus before they reach the city. So I set up the Google Business Profile properly, put the shop on a map with a landmark (Bank Road, the Junction), list opening hours and a WhatsApp number, and show photos of actual stock, not catalogue images. A catalogue page with prices in rupees helps Nepali customers who compare before crossing. Online payment is optional; most of these buyers still pay cash or UPI at the counter. Budget Rs 15,000 to 25,000, finished in about ten days.
Will you come to Gorakhpur for meetings, or is everything on a call?
Everything starts on WhatsApp and a video call; that is how we have run projects across UP since 2017 and it keeps your cost down. For a larger build, a school ERP or a factory portal, I do come to Gorakhpur for the kickoff and the handover. Lucknow to Gorakhpur is a morning train or four to five hours on the road, so it is not a big ask. For a small business site, honestly, the visit adds cost and no value; you will see the design in your browser on day three and we fix it live on the call.
