LMS Development Cost India 2026: ₹2.5L-₹50L Full Breakdown
LMS Development Cost India 2026: The Honest ₹2.5L-₹50L Breakdown
I'm Ashish Sharma, founder of Codingclave. Since 2021, we've built 14 learning management systems for Indian and Gulf clients — JEE/NEET coaching brands, corporate training platforms, K-12 schools, professional certification academies, and one Series-A edtech startup that crossed 80,000 paying users.
The cost question is the first thing every founder asks me. The answer most agencies give you is garbage — "₹3L to ₹50L, depends on features." That's useless. So this guide breaks down the real ranges, feature-by-feature, with the hidden costs nobody tells you about upfront.
A quick anchor before we start: a Bengaluru-based corporate L&D founder we worked with last year burned through ₹4.8L on a ₹2.2L quote before coming to us — vendor disappeared mid-build, code was unrecoverable, full restart. That's the cost of choosing on price alone. Use the ranges below as guardrails — if a quote is more than 40% below them, ask hard questions.
TL;DR — LMS Build Profiles at a Glance
| Build Profile | Cost Range | Timeline | Who It's For |
|---|---|---|---|
| SaaS reseller (Graphy, Classplus, Teachable) | ₹15K-₹2L Year-1 | 7-21 days | Under 1,000 users, validating idea |
| MVP custom LMS (web only) | ₹2.5L-₹6L | 8-12 weeks | 500-2,000 users, paid courses, India-specific needs |
| Professional LMS (web + 1 mobile app) | ₹7L-₹18L | 14-22 weeks | 2K-10K users, SCORM, DRM, certificates |
| Full custom (web + iOS + Android + live) | ₹18L-₹35L | 22-34 weeks | 10K-50K users, coaching/edtech scale |
| Enterprise LMS (multi-tenant, white-label) | ₹35L-₹60L+ | 30-50 weeks | 50K+ users, SaaS resellers, government, conglomerates |
| Moodle / Open edX custom deployment | ₹50K-₹12L | 4-16 weeks | Academia, NGO, traditional training |
Pick the row that matches your real Year-2 user count, not your Year-1 fantasy. Most founders overbuild — the ₹18L "full custom" with zero users is a worse outcome than the ₹3L MVP that learns from 800 users in 6 months.
SaaS vs Custom-Built LMS — Honest Cost Comparison
Most "should I build or buy" content is biased by who's writing it. SaaS vendors say buy. Agencies say build. Here's the real math.
When SaaS Wins (Year-1 cost ₹70K-₹4L)
TalentLMS — $69-$429/month (~₹5,800-₹36,000), best for corporate training under 1,000 users. Free plan for 5 users + 10 courses.
Teachable — $29-$499/month (~₹2,400-₹42,000), best for solo creators selling courses. Razorpay integration via Stripe Atlas.
Thinkific — $0-$499/month, similar to Teachable. Free plan exists but transaction fees apply.
Graphy by Unacademy — ₹3,500-₹25,000/month, India-built, mobile app included, Razorpay native, used by 30,000+ Indian creators.
Classplus — ₹2,000-₹15,000/month, India-built for coaching institutes, white-label mobile app on Play Store/App Store, used by 1L+ Indian coaching businesses.
Moodle Workplace — ₹120-₹1,710/month per plan tier (corporate-grade Moodle).
For under 1,000 users with generic content, SaaS is the right answer. The total Year-1 cost is under ₹4L, no engineering hires, no maintenance headache.
When Custom Wins (Year-1 cost ₹6L-₹40L)
Custom builds become the right answer at one or more of these triggers:
- You're paying SaaS over ₹3L/month — that's ₹36L/year, and custom build pays back in 18-24 months
- Content protection is critical — paid coaching, premium professional courses where piracy costs you over 25% of revenue
- India payment gateway integration deep — UPI Autopay, Razorpay subscriptions, EMI options, partial payments
- White-label for resellers — coaching franchises, B2B SaaS to other training companies
- Regional language UX — Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi tuned UX (most SaaS only translates strings)
- Custom assessment + certification — government certifications, NCVET-aligned skill assessments, proctored exams
If three or more apply to you, start budgeting custom. If zero apply, stay on SaaS — your money is better spent on content and marketing.

Hidden Costs That Buyers Miss
Every founder I onboard has a budget that misses these. Add them up before you sign anything.
1. Video Storage + Bandwidth
A 100-hour course library at 1080p is roughly 500 GB. At Vdocipher rates that's around ₹50,000/month all-in for 5,000 monthly active students streaming 4-6 hours each. Custom CDN via Bunny.net or Cloudflare Stream can drop this to ₹15,000-₹30,000/month but adds ₹2L-₹5L upfront for DRM integration. Annual budget: ₹3L-₹15L just for video.
2. SCORM and xAPI Compliance
If you need to import existing course content (most corporate L&D buyers do), full SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 compliance adds ₹1.5L-₹4L and 4-6 weeks. xAPI (Tin Can) for mobile and offline tracking adds ₹1L-₹3L. Skip this only if you're authoring all content natively in your LMS.
3. Live Class Infrastructure
100ms costs roughly ₹0.50 per student-hour for HD video. A coaching institute running 200 live class hours/month with 1,000 average attendees racks up ₹1L/month. Agora is similar. At 50K students, you're looking at ₹5L-₹15L/month. This often shocks founders who priced live classes off the demo plan.
4. App Store Approvals + Rejections
Apple App Store rejects 20-40 percent of first submissions. Plan for ₹50K-₹2L in App Store Optimization (ASO), screenshots, video previews, and 2-4 review cycles. iOS subscription IAP integration adds ₹80K-₹2L if you support in-app purchases (Apple takes 30 percent cut, 15 percent after Year-1).
5. Maintenance + Bug Fixes
Industry-standard maintenance is 15-20 percent of build cost annually. A ₹10L LMS needs ₹1.5L-₹2L/year in steady-state engineering for bug fixes, security patches, dependency upgrades, minor features. Anyone quoting 5 percent maintenance is lowballing you.
6. Scaling Refactors
Going from 5K to 50K active users almost always requires architectural rework — database sharding, read replicas, multi-region CDN, queue-based job processing. Budget ₹3L-₹10L for the mid-life scaling refactor around Year 2.
Total hidden cost burden: 35-55 percent of build cost in Year-1, 25-35 percent ongoing.
Cost by Feature Set (Basic / Advanced / Enterprise)
Basic LMS (₹2.5L-₹6L)
What you get: web-only, course catalog, video player with HLS streaming, quiz engine (MCQ + true-false), Razorpay integration, certificate auto-generation, student/admin dashboards, email notifications, basic analytics. Up to 2,000 active users on standard cloud hosting.
What's missing: mobile apps, SCORM/xAPI, DRM, live classes, gamification, advanced analytics.
Who this is for: solo course creator, niche professional certification, small coaching institute validating demand.
Advanced LMS (₹7L-₹18L)
What you get: everything in Basic plus React Native or Flutter mobile app (iOS + Android), Vdocipher DRM integration, SCORM 1.2 + 2004 compliance, descriptive question grading, gamification (XP, badges, leaderboards), instructor revenue share, discussion forums, advanced analytics dashboards, WhatsApp + SMS notifications. Handles 10,000 active users with autoscaling.
Who this is for: established coaching institute, corporate L&D rollout, edtech startup post product-market fit.
Enterprise LMS (₹18L-₹50L+)
What you get: everything in Advanced plus native iOS + Android apps, live class integration (100ms/Agora) with breakout rooms and whiteboards, AI doubt-solving (RAG over course content), adaptive learning engine, multi-tenant white-label architecture, SSO (SAML, OAuth, OIDC), custom DRM infrastructure, proctored exam engine, offline-first mobile with sync, advanced reporting + BI dashboards. Handles 50K-500K active users multi-region.
Who this is for: scaled coaching brands (JEE/NEET/UPSC), large corporates, government skill missions, edtech aiming at Series B+.
For Indian coaching institutes specifically worried about content protection at scale, my DRM-protected LMS for coaching institutes guide gets into the encryption tradeoffs in detail.
Real Anonymized Project: ₹14.2L LMS for a UP-based Banking Exam Coaching Institute
Client profile: 6-year-old banking exam coaching institute (SSC, IBPS, RBI, SBI prep), 8,500 paying students/year, ₹12Cr annual revenue. Previously on Classplus, hit feature limits — needed custom branding, deeper analytics, and stronger DRM after losing ₹35L+ to Telegram piracy in a single quarter.
Build scope: Professional LMS tier
| Line Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Discovery + UX design (3 weeks) | ₹1.4L |
| Frontend web (Next.js + Tailwind) | ₹3.8L |
| Backend (Node.js + Postgres + Redis) | ₹2.9L |
| React Native mobile app (iOS + Android) | ₹3.5L |
| Vdocipher DRM integration | ₹65K |
| Razorpay + UPI Autopay subscriptions | ₹55K |
| Live class integration (100ms) | ₹85K |
| Admin dashboard + content moderation | ₹95K |
| QA + bug fixes (4 weeks) | ₹40K |
| Total build | ₹14.2L |
| Year-1 hosting + DRM + payment fees | ₹6.8L |
| Year-1 maintenance retainer | ₹2.4L |
| Year-1 all-in | ₹23.4L |
Build timeline: 18 weeks. Launched with 8,500 existing students migrated over 3 weekends. 6 months post-launch: piracy losses dropped ₹35L → ₹4L per quarter, conversion on free-trial-to-paid rose from 6 percent to 11 percent. Payback on full Year-1 cost: 8 months.
This is the "professional LMS" tier — not the cheapest, not the most expensive. It's where most founder-grade Indian coaching institutes land.
SaaS LMS Subscription Pricing (India-Tuned)
For comparison, here's what SaaS costs at the same 8,500-student scale:
| Platform | Monthly Cost | Year-1 Cost | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| TalentLMS Premium | ₹4.3L | Per-user cap, weak DRM, no India payment depth | |
| Teachable Pro | $119 (~₹10K) | ₹1.2L + 5% txn fees | No native mobile, weak content protection |
| Thinkific Plus | $499 (~₹42K) | ₹5L | Similar to Teachable Pro |
| Graphy Pro | ₹25K | ₹3L | India-tuned, mobile app, decent DRM, capped customization |
| Classplus Premium | ₹15K | ₹1.8L | India-tuned coaching, white-label mobile, limited UI control |
| Disprz | ₹80K-₹3L | ₹10L-₹36L | Enterprise corporate training, India-built |
| Wise.live | ₹15K-₹2L | ₹2L-₹24L | India-tuned, coaching-focused |
| Moodle Workplace | $120-$1,710/mo | ₹1L-₹17L | Self-hosted, requires DevOps team |
At 8,500 students with paid content, the math at this client tilted clearly to custom — Graphy/Classplus couldn't deliver custom DRM workflows, branded mobile app, or the analytics depth they needed. SaaS Year-1 at Graphy Pro tier would have been ₹3L, which sounds cheaper than the ₹14.2L custom build. But the SaaS option couldn't stop the ₹1.4Cr/year piracy loss they were eating — the custom DRM-protected build recovered ₹1.24Cr in the first year alone. Always do the math on what the SaaS option doesn't fix, not just what it costs.
What if this same institute had been smaller?
The same client at 800 students would have been better off staying on Classplus or Graphy. The ₹14.2L build economics only work because they had revenue scale and piracy loss to justify it. At 800 students with ₹2.4L/year piracy loss, custom DRM payback would have been 5+ years — wrong call. This is the math founders skip: every custom LMS build needs payback in under 24 months on either (a) saved SaaS spend, (b) recovered piracy revenue, or (c) higher conversion from better UX. If none of those clear ₹50K/month, custom is premature.
How to Vet an LMS Development Agency
Six questions that filter out 80 percent of bad vendors before you sign anything.
-
"Show me 3 live LMS deployments you built with over 5,000 monthly active users." If they can only show demos or under-1K-user installs, they haven't built for scale. Most "₹2L LMS" vendors fail this question.
-
"Who owns the source code after handover and is it on my GitHub from day 1?" Correct answer: you own it, code is on your repo from sprint 1. If they're hosting code on their private repo "for now," you'll get held hostage at handover.
-
"What's your SCORM / xAPI compliance approach?" If they don't know the difference between SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, and xAPI, they haven't built corporate-grade LMS.
-
"How do you handle video DRM and what's the per-student/month cost at scale?" Correct answer references Vdocipher, AWS MediaPackage, Bunny Stream, or similar. If they say "we use Vimeo Pro," they haven't dealt with paid content.
-
"What does Year-2 maintenance look like and what's the hourly rate after warranty ends?" If they won't quote post-warranty rates upfront, expect blank-check invoicing in Year-2.
-
"What's your test coverage and CI/CD setup?" Correct answer: 60-80 percent test coverage on critical paths, GitHub Actions or similar running on every PR. If they say "we test manually," your bug rate in Year-2 will be catastrophic.
When to Build vs When to Buy (Decision Framework)
Use this as a 30-second triage:
Stay on SaaS if:
- Under 1,000 paying users
- Generic course content (not specialized assessment, not regulated certifications)
- Single language (English or Hindi only)
- No reseller / white-label needs
- Engineering team smaller than 3 people
Build hybrid (SaaS + custom layer) if:
- 1,000-5,000 paying users
- SaaS limits hitting in 1-2 areas (custom branding, specific payment flow, branded mobile)
- Want to test custom incrementally without ₹15L upfront
Build fully custom if:
- 5,000+ paying users
- Paying SaaS over ₹2.5L/month
- Content protection is critical (paid coaching, premium credentials)
- Need multi-tenant, white-label, or reseller distribution
- Need deep India payment integration (UPI Autopay, EMI, partial pay, multi-installment)
- Need offline-first mobile
For founders weighing custom vs no-code more broadly, my SaaS founder custom vs low-code guide walks through the same tradeoff for full SaaS products.
