Fintech in Coimbatore: chits, gold loans and the Registrar you will answer to
Checked
I write this from Lucknow, but Coimbatore's fintech buyers follow a pattern. They are not payment gateway startups. They are chit companies, gold loan lenders, daily finance firms, cooperative societies and the back offices of pump and textile units.
Coimbatore is the chit fund capital of Tamil Nadu
The Tamil Nadu Registration Department's policy note for 2024-25 lists 2,158 registered chit companies in the state as on 31 March 2024. The Coimbatore zone alone has 548 of them, more than Chennai (299) and more than any other zone. The city also hosts one of the state's three Chit Arbitrators; the other two sit in Chennai.
Chits are regulated by the Registration Department, not the RBI. The Inspector General of Registration is the Registrar of Chits, and the Coimbatore District Registrar is your Deputy Registrar of Chits. Every group needs a Previous Sanction Order backed by a security deposit before it starts. The filing fees are small but constant: Rs 100 to file the agreement, Rs 50 for each set of minutes, Rs 100 per subscriber substitution or removal, and Rs 1,500 for the audited balance sheet. A good chit system is really a filing calendar with a ledger attached.
Gold is the second pillar
Tamil Nadu held Rs 4.12 lakh crore of public sector bank gold loans on 31 March 2026, about 36 percent of the all-India PSB total (Lok Sabha reply). Coimbatore district has over 2,000 gold jewellery manufacturing units, 40,000 home-based workshops and 1.5 lakh people in the trade (The New Indian Express, November 2024). A Rs 126 crore gold jewellery park is coming up at the SIDCO estate in Kurichi. A lot of lending here is pledge-based, which the RBI's 2025 gold and silver collateral directions tightened from 1 April 2026: tiered LTV caps, a valuation certificate with a photo of the pledge, and prescribed auction and release procedures. That is where my gold loan conversations start now.
Who buys this software, and where they are
| Buyer type | Where in the city | What they usually ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Chit companies | Peelamedu, Gandhipuram, Ram Nagar | Auction, collector app, Registrar filings |
| Gold loan NBFCs and jeweller-financiers | RS Puram, Oppanakara Street area, Town Hall | LTV engine, pledge photos, auction notices |
| Cooperative societies | Across Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts | Share ledger, loan EMI, member passbooks |
| Industrial back offices | SIDCO Kurichi, Ganapathy, Saravanampatti | Payroll, GST billing, vendor payments |
The Coimbatore District Central Co-operative Bank, registered in 1910, lists 1,079 affiliated societies across Coimbatore and Tiruppur on its last published count (2015) and runs 38 branches. Many still run on spreadsheets and want a small loan and share ledger, not a credit-scoring platform.
Tamil Nadu was India's fifth largest UPI state with 2.33 billion transactions in April to June 2025 (NPCI data via Medianama). Collectors take UPI on the doorstep, so a collector app without QR and automatic receipt matching gets rejected by field staff within a week.
The local supply side
Coimbatore has its own software industry. Saravanampatti is the IT corridor, KGISL is a Coimbatore-headquartered BFSI software company, and ThePrint counted startups rising from 271 in 2020 to 1,350 in 2024. In June 2024 the state said StartupTN would add a regional hub in Coimbatore. Several local vendors sell off-the-shelf chit and finance software, usually Windows desktop, priced per branch with a yearly AMC.
When a Coimbatore vendor is the better choice: you want someone to sit in your Gandhipuram office on auction day and you run a single branch with no plans to expand. When we are the better choice: you need a web and mobile system that works across branches, you want the Registrar exports and RBI rules built in rather than bolted on, and you are fine with WhatsApp and screen-share instead of a visit. We are in the same time zone, I reply personally, and the payroll and billing products on this page have live demos. For anything touching chits or gold, I ask for one call with your auditor before quoting, because the filing calendar decides the scope.
Common questions
- Can you build chit fund management software that matches what the Registrar of Chits in Coimbatore asks for?
- Yes, and chit funds are a large part of Coimbatore's finance market. The Chit Funds Act 1982 and the Tamil Nadu Chit Fund Rules 1984 are administered by the Registration Department, so the District Registrar in Coimbatore acts as Deputy Registrar of Chits. Your software has to produce what that office wants to see: the chit agreement, the Previous Sanction Order reference per group, auction minutes for every draw, subscriber substitution and removal records, and an audited balance sheet per group. I build those as exports your auditor can file as-is, with Tamil receipts and SMS for subscribers. I do not file on your behalf; your auditor or agent does that.
- We are a gold loan NBFC or jeweller-financier in Coimbatore. What changed on 1 April 2026 and does your software handle it?
- The RBI Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral Directions 2025 took full effect on 1 April 2026. For Coimbatore lenders the practical change is the tiered loan-to-value cap: 85 percent for loans up to Rs 2.5 lakh, 80 percent from Rs 2.5 to 5 lakh, and 75 percent above that, plus a purity and valuation certificate with an image of the pledge handed to the borrower. I build the LTV rule into disbursement so a branch cannot override it, store the assay certificate and photographs against each pledge, and generate the release and auction notices the directions require. If you already run on a desktop tool bought locally, we can migrate the pledge ledger rather than start over.
- Our members and collectors in Coimbatore read Tamil. Do you deliver Tamil interfaces, or is it English only?
- Tamil is a requirement, not an option, for most Coimbatore fintech work I do. Field collectors for chits, daily finance and cooperative societies key entries on phones, and subscribers expect receipts and payment reminders in Tamil. I ship the collector app, receipts, SMS and WhatsApp templates in Tamil with English as the back-office default, and the admin can switch either way. Translation is done with a Tamil speaker from your own team reviewing the strings, because financial terms like auction discount and foreman commission have local usage that a dictionary gets wrong. Budget about a week extra for this on a mid-sized build.
