Selling school and college software in Mysuru: SATS, UUCMS and the Kannada question

Checked

I run Codingclave from Lucknow. Mysuru is not a city I can drive to, so here is what I actually know about it as an education market.

The size of the market, from the district's own numbers

The district administration's statistics handbook for 2016-17 (school figures from the DDPI Mysuru) counts 1,091 lower primary and 1,548 higher primary schools, 700 high schools with 85,381 students, and 248 PU colleges with about 62,400 students. Mysuru taluk alone had 334 high schools and 134 PU colleges. Roughly 26,500 PU students, about 42 percent, sat in private unaided colleges, which is the segment that pays for software. All 14 of the district's engineering colleges, with around 4,500 students, were private and in Mysuru taluk. The shape has not changed since: a dense city core, and rural taluks where a school may have no case for a paid ERP.

Two state systems you have to live with

Every Karnataka school already feeds the Student Achievement Tracking System. SATS, the state's school portal, carries enrolment, attendance, CCE results, promotion and transfer certificate issue, and each child is identified by an STS number. The SSLC is no longer a single sitting either; KSEAB's own notices refer to the 2026 SSLC Examination 1 and 2. A school ERP that ignores the STS number, the SATS student master and more than one board exam window doubles the office's work.

Colleges face the same thing one level up. UUCMS, the Karnataka government's Unified University and College Management System, is where admissions, the student record and results for the state universities now sit. The University of Mysore, founded in 1916, has roughly 127 affiliated colleges and around 53,000 students across four districts, and those colleges still need internal assessment, fees, hostel, library and placement handled somewhere. That is what I sell.

Kannada is not optional

The Kannada Language Learning Act 2015 (Karnataka Act 22 of 2015) made Kannada a compulsory language subject in the state's schools. Mysuru's literacy rate was 86.84 percent in the 2011 census, well above the state figure, but literacy here means Kannada first. Parent screens, receipts and SMS in Kannada are in my scope by default.

Who buys here

Buyer Where they sit What they actually ask for
Private unaided schools Mysuru city and taluk Fees, parent app, SATS-shaped student master
Affiliated degree and PU colleges Across the district IA marks, attendance shortage, fee instalments
Trusts running many institutions JSS Mahavidyapeetha, headquartered in the city, runs 350+ institutions Multi-branch, consolidated reporting
Corporate and skilling academies Hebbal and Hootagalli industrial areas LMS with assessments and certificates

The last row matters more here than in most cities. Infosys opened its Global Education Centre in Mysuru in 2002 on a 337 acre campus that can train 14,000 people at a time, and the Hebbal and Hootagalli estates around it are KIADB industrial areas, not school zones. Academies feeding that pool want an LMS with proctored tests, not a bell schedule.

The local supply side

Mysuru has serious education software of its own. Excelsoft Technologies, incorporated in 2000, is a Mysuru software company selling learning and assessment SaaS, e-marking and online proctoring globally, and the city is Karnataka's second largest software exporter after Bengaluru. Local vendors mostly point at global enterprise, not at a 600-student school.

When a Mysuru vendor is the better choice: you want someone in the staff room during admissions week, or you need an on-site team for twenty campuses. When we are the better choice: you want a web and mobile system priced like a product (school ERP Rs 39,999 one-time or Rs 3,999 a month, college ERP Rs 79,999 or Rs 7,999 a month, LMS Rs 49,999 or Rs 4,999 a month), you are fine with WhatsApp and screen-share, and you want SATS and UUCMS designed in rather than patched on. The school product has a live demo you can click through before we speak; the college ERP and LMS are guided walkthroughs. Same time zone, and I reply myself.

Questions we get from Selling school and college software in Mysuru: SATS, UUCMS and the Kannada question buyers

Our school in Mysuru already enters everything into SATS. Why would we pay for a separate school ERP?
SATS is the department's record, not your school's operating system. It holds enrolment, attendance, CCE results, promotion and TC issue for the department, and it is built for compliance, not for your front office. It does not collect fees, send a Kannada SMS to a parent, run your bus route or let a teacher mark attendance from a phone in ten seconds. What I build keeps the student master in the shape SATS expects, with the STS number on every child, so your clerk enters data once and updates SATS from a clean export instead of keeping two registers. If a clerk already manages SATS comfortably in an hour a week, you may not need me yet.
We are a University of Mysore affiliated college. Admissions and results already run on UUCMS. What is left for college software to do?
Quite a lot, because UUCMS covers what the state wants to see: admissions, the student record and results across the state universities. It does not run your internal assessment marks before they are finalised, your library, hostel, fee instalments, attendance shortage letters, placement cell or alumni. Most affiliated colleges I have spoken to keep those in Excel or in a locally bought desktop tool. I build the college ERP around the UUCMS student ID so you never have two identities for one student, and I design the IA marks module to produce the exact sheet your exam coordinator uploads. I do not touch UUCMS itself; nobody outside the department should.
Do you deliver Kannada interfaces, or is everything in English?
For a Mysuru school the parent app and SMS must work in Kannada, and that is before anyone mentions the 2015 Act. Teachers and principals are usually fine with English in the back office, but the parent of a class 3 child in Nanjangud or Hunsur is not, and fee reminders in English get ignored. I ship the parent app, receipts and message templates in Kannada with English as the admin default, and the switch is per user. Translation is reviewed by a Kannada speaker on your own staff, because school vocabulary such as unit test, fee concession and TC has local usage that machine translation gets wrong. Budget about a week extra on a school build for this.
