Which Function replaces each Script
Shopify's developer changelog, posted 9 April 2026, set two dates: no Script could be edited or published from 15 April 2026, and none executed after 30 June 2026. If your theme still advertises "buy 2, save 10%" and checkout ignores it, that is why. If you swapped in an app that almost fits, or a quick Function that misfires on big carts, the repair starts from the same report.
Scripts were written in a limited Ruby in the Script Editor app, in three kinds: line item, shipping and payment.

Your plan decides whether a custom Function can run
Before you hire a Shopify Plus developer, or anyone else, read one line in Shopify's Function docs: a custom app containing Function APIs runs only on Shopify Plus. Public App Store apps with Functions work on any plan, unless an API page says otherwise.
On Plus
The replacement is a custom app with Function APIs, installed on your store only and carrying the rules from your report. You decide what it does next year.
On Basic, Grow or Advanced
A custom Function won't run for you. Your options are a public App Store app that contains Functions, Shopify's built-in discounts and shipping profiles, or a move to Plus, which starts at CAD 3,400 a month on Shopify's Canadian pricing page. Other plan fees are in our Shopify store cost guide.
Some features stay Plus-only even inside a public app. Cart Transform's lineUpdate, which rewrites a line's price or title, is one (Cart Transform API), so we read the API page for your rule before quoting.
Where a new app lives since 1 January 2026
From 1 January 2026, new legacy custom apps can't be created in the Shopify admin; existing ones keep working (Shopify changelog). New apps come from the Dev Dashboard, and we can register yours under an organization you own, so it stays with you if you change developers.

Buy an app or pay for a Function?
If an app or a built-in feature already does what your Script did, buy it and skip the developer. App fees vary by listing, so weigh the monthly charge against a one-off build plus upkeep. A custom Function pays off when the rule belongs to your store and nobody else's.

Resource limits that set the scope of a rebuild
Shopify publishes hard resource limits for every Function (Function APIs). A rebuild that ignores them passes on a three-item test cart and fails on a 150-line wholesale order.

Shopify strongly recommends Rust for large carts; JavaScript suits a small rule on short carts, and the quote says which we'd use. A Function also keeps no record of earlier orders, so a "first 50 orders" promotion needs a counter kept outside it.

Canadian checkout rules a Function can enforce
We haven't built these for a Canadian store yet. Each is a rule a Function API or checkout UI extension can enforce, and we can build it.
Remote northern addresses
Under Canada Post's addressing guidelines, postal codes starting with X belong to the Northwest Territories or Nunavut, Y to Yukon, and a 0 in second place marks a rural code. A Delivery Customization Function can read those characters and hide a free or express option your carrier can't honour there.
Province shipping blocks
Maybe a supplier won't ship to one province, or you hold a licence in one province only. Cart and Checkout Validation stops checkout with a clear message when the address and an item don't mix, instead of a refund afterwards.
Prices in CAD and USD
If US shoppers pay in US dollars, a "free shipping over CAD 100" rule must decide what a USD cart counts as. Ask any developer to show you in the API reference which currency the cart amounts arrive in.
GST/HST and PST after a discount goes live
None of the Function APIs Shopify lists calculates tax. After a new discount Function goes live, check a week of GST/HST and PST figures before your next filing.
Quebec shoppers
If you sell into Quebec, Function messages and checkout extensions can carry French text. We supply that French, checked by a fluent French reviewer, and your lawyer confirms what Quebec's language rules require of your store.
Ontario accessibility (AODA)
Ontario businesses and non-profits with 50 or more employees must make public web content posted after 1 January 2012 meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA, apart from live captions and pre-recorded audio descriptions, and stay responsible when a contractor builds it (Government of Ontario). What Shopify developers earn and charge in Canada
Job Bank has no Shopify category. The closest is web developer (NOC 21234): a national median of CAD 38.46 an hour, 40.00 in Ontario and 40.23 in Alberta, in Job Bank's wage report updated 19 November 2025. Those are employee wages before payroll costs, which our Flutter hire page adds up. Market figures measure other things, so read the last column first.

Putting a Function live without breaking a sale
A discount Function that misfires on a Saturday morning costs more than the build did. If your rules must work for Black Friday on 27 November 2026, have them built and tested by mid-November, so launch day isn't also test day.
Settings in metafields, not code
Thresholds, tag names, province lists and percentages sit in a metafield your staff can edit, so moving free shipping from CAD 100 to CAD 120 is an admin change, not a redeploy.
Tested against carts shaped like yours
Each Function runs locally through Shopify CLI against saved cart inputs, including carts shaped like your largest orders with customer details removed. A live result that looks wrong is replayed from its logs, so the fix is tested on the cart that failed.

A paid test task for any Functions developer, ours included
Set a small paid task before you sign anyone up. Interview answers can be rehearsed; rebuilding one of your own Scripts can't.
The task
Pick one real Script, such as 10% off 3 or more items and 15% off 5 or more, for customers tagged wholesale only. Ask for a Discount Function in a development store with the tiers and tag held in one JSON metafield, an input query shown to cost under 30, and the repository handed over.
