Quick answer

What is the going rate for custom software development in London, Ontario?

Between about CAD 35 and CAD 426 an hour, depending on who you hire (figures read 16 October 2026). ManagePoint, a London IT and software firm, publishes about $25,000 (currency not stated) for simple automation and $75,000 to $200,000 for a business system. Four of the six London-listed Clutch studios we checked show USD 100–300 an hour (about CAD 142 to 426), and two show USD 25–49 (about CAD 35 to 70). An employed developer in the London region earns a median CAD 46.50 an hour before payroll costs. Codingclave charges CAD 30–60 an hour. Most of our scoped builds land between CAD 6,000 and 60,000. The quote is free.

London prices, side by side

An hourly rate, a project price and a wage measure different things, so read across rows with care. Of the four London software firms we checked on 16 October 2026 (STEP Software, CoreSolutions, ManagePoint and Acumen Consulting), only ManagePoint prints project prices. It doesn't name a currency; we've assumed CAD. Clutch rates are generally understood to be US dollars, so we converted them.

Published price levels for London, Ontario software work, read 16 October 2026. US-dollar figures multiplied by 1.4196, the Bank of Canada rate for 15 October 2026. Tax excluded.

Two London-listed studios overlap our hourly band, so rate alone won't settle it. The written terms will; the shortlist questions further down cover them.

If your job sits under the minimums above (up to USD 10,000+ at some studios, or ManagePoint's $25,000 starting tier), a narrow tool can still be built by the hour at CAD 30–60.

What pushes a quote from CAD 6,000 towards 60,000

A 12-screen tool can cost less than a 5-screen one. These five things move the price.

  • How many roles, and how many approvals

Supervisors who approve, office staff who edit and floor staff who see only their own jobs mean permission rules and tests on every screen. A two-step approval with an audit trail is usually the biggest single line on the quote.

  • What it has to talk to

QuickBooks Online, with its published API, is the lighter case. Sage 50 runs on a desktop in your office, so syncing it takes more work. A supplier's EDI file needs careful mapping, because one malformed line can stop a whole batch.

  • Moving data out of the old tool

Ten years of Access or Excel rows hold surprises: one customer entered three ways, dates typed as text, a column someone repurposed in 2019. Cleaning and mapping is priced as its own line, not buried in the build.

  • A public portal built to AODA level

With 50 or more Ontario employees, plan for WCAG 2.0 AA from the first screen (the rules are below). Building it in adds design and testing time; retrofitting it after launch costs more.

  • Tablets on a shop floor with patchy Wi-Fi

Bigger buttons and barcode scanning are cheap. Offline sync isn't: if two people edit one job while disconnected, you need a rule for whose change wins, and that rule needs testing.

Before the first call, write three lists: everyone who uses the tool and what they may change, every system it touches, and a row count for each table you would move. Those answers set most of the figure. The screens come last.

Employ a developer, or pay for one project?

Start with risk, not salary. With one employee, the knowledge of how the system fits together leaves when they do. With a vendor it can too, unless the handover is written into the contract: repository, hosting and credentials in your firm's name, set-up notes, and a bug-fix period after launch.

Then the cost. Job Bank puts software developers and programmers in the London economic region at CAD 30.32 an hour low, 46.50 median and 72.72 high (Small Area Estimation, 2024), with the median CAD 1.58 under Ontario's 48.08. At 2,080 paid hours that median is about CAD 96,700 a year, before CPP, EI, benefits and recruiting. Our page on what employing a developer in Canada costs (CPP, EI, benefits) works through those sums.

Employ once software is a permanent part of what you sell, with years of work ahead and someone senior enough in your firm to review the code and set priorities. For a tool built once and changed now and then, a scoped project fits better. The single-developer risk is covered in more depth in freelancer vs agency.

When the workbook, Access file or student-built app stops coping

Most custom-software jobs start with a tool that already runs the business and has stopped coping. Four versions are worth recognizing.

  • A shared Excel workbook

Two people save at once and one loses their work, or the macros run only on the author's laptop, and nobody can say who changed a price last Tuesday. A small web app with logins, an edit history and an Excel export usually replaces it.

  • Microsoft Access on a shared drive

If the file locks the moment a second person opens a form, or needs compact and repair every week, it's at its limit, and a corrupted file on a network drive can take years of records with it. We can move the tables to PostgreSQL or SQL Server and rebuild the forms as web screens.

  • A FileMaker solution

Licence costs climb with every seat, and fewer developers still work in it each year. The real danger is the one consultant who knows the file moving on. Sometimes keeping and maintaining it is the cheaper answer; the quote prices both routes so you can choose.

  • An app a student built on placement

It works, but the code sits on a former placement student's personal GitHub and the hosting bills an expired card. Securing the accounts and the repository comes first; only then does it make sense to extend or rebuild.

Screenshots, a redacted copy or a short screen recording are enough for a first written quote. A replacement runs beside the old tool until both give the same numbers; our guide to modernizing legacy software sets out that method.

None of our past projects is a London factory, food plant or clinic. The closest in shape is the template system that runs websites for 20+ government polytechnics in Uttar Pradesh: one codebase serving many sites, which is the same problem as one tool used by several plants or branches. Before you shortlist anyone

Two places list London software firms; neither says which one fits.

Put these five questions to every firm on the list, in writing.

  • When does the code become ours?

Look for a contract clause naming the moment ownership passes, and whose account the repository lives in meanwhile.

  • Is the price fixed, or hourly?

Either can be fair. What matters is that a fixed price comes with a written scope and a list of exclusions.

  • What happens after launch?

Ask how long bugs are fixed free, how fast an outage gets attention, and how later changes are priced.

  • Where is our data hosted, and who can reach it?

Hosting region and access location are separate questions. Get both answers.

  • What if the firm disappears?

With code, hosting, domain and credentials in your name, another developer can pick the work up. Insist on that with anyone.

Our answers, for comparison: code and IP become yours with the final payment, and we can set up the repository in your account from the start. The price is fixed once the scope is in writing; small or open-ended work goes by the hour. Bug fixes are free for six months after launch, emergencies on a live system get a 24/7 response, and later changes are quoted. We can host in a Canadian region if you need it, though our developers reach it from India.

When a London firm is the better call

Four situations where a firm you can drive to will serve you better.

  • Someone has to be on your floor for weeks

Rolling software out across a plant, training each shift in person, or wiring scanners and label printers into a line needs someone there. We work only remotely, so nobody from Codingclave will be on your floor.

  • You want one firm to run your IT too

Some London firms we checked, ManagePoint among them, pair software with managed IT: help desk, networks, phones and cybersecurity. If you want one firm answerable for servers and software, choose a managed-IT provider with people in London, which we are not.

  • Hospital or health-authority systems

These are bought through public procurement, with vendor requirements a remote supplier in another country rarely meets. This page doesn't cover that work; for health, we can build for private clinics and home-care providers.

  • An SR&ED claim rides on the work

Work a contractor performs outside Canada generally can't be claimed under SR&ED, which can tip the numbers towards a London firm. The CRA policy is linked from the SR&ED note on work done outside Canada.

Founder-led by Ashish Sharma

Ask on WhatsApp

How much does custom software development cost in London, Ontario in 2026?

Published London figures start at about $25,000 for simple automation at ManagePoint (currency not stated), and four of the six London-listed Clutch studios we checked on 16 October 2026 list USD 100–300 an hour. The gap to our CAD 30–60 an hour comes mostly from salaries and overhead in each country, not from a different kind of work. Most of our scoped builds land between CAD 6,000 and 60,000. Compare the written terms, not only the rate.

Is it cheaper to hire a software developer in London, Ontario than to outsource?

Only if there is steady work for a year or more. At the London median of CAD 46.50 an hour (Job Bank, 2024 estimates), a full-time developer costs about CAD 96,700 a year in wages, before CPP, EI, benefits and recruiting. A one-off internal tool rarely fills that much time, and someone in your firm still has to review the code. Our page on employer payroll costs does the full sum.

Is custom software worth it over off-the-shelf or SaaS for an Ontario firm?

Usually not, if a subscription covers most of what you need. Custom pays when per-seat fees climb with every hire, when staff run the real process in a spreadsheet beside the product, or when the way you quote, schedule or trace stock is what sets you apart. Our build-vs-buy checklist walks through the questions to ask before you commission anything.

Can you turn our Microsoft Access or FileMaker database into a web app?

Yes, we can. The tables move into a server database, the forms and reports are rebuilt as web screens with logins and an edit history, and the old file stays in use until both give the same numbers. Send screenshots or a redacted copy for a written quote. If staying on FileMaker and maintaining it suits you better, the quote says so and prices that route too.

Can a London clinic or home-care agency use booking software built in India?

Yes, provided the clinic keeps control. Under PHIPA the clinic, as health information custodian, stays accountable for any booking service it uses, and a provider that isn't its agent may use health information only to deliver that service; your privacy adviser confirms the details. Budgets and clinic features are on our clinic software cost guide.

Who owns the source code when an Indian team builds our software?

Your firm does. On a fixed-scope project with Codingclave, all code and IP pass to you with the final payment. We can create the repository in your GitHub or GitLab account at the start and put hosting and the domain in your name. Whoever you hire, here or abroad, get the ownership answer as a clause in the contract, not a promise on a call.

Is there anyone in London, Ontario we can meet in person?

No. Nobody from Codingclave is in London or anywhere else in Canada; the whole team works remotely from Lucknow, India. Meetings are video calls inside the live-call window, and day-to-day questions go through WhatsApp or email. If your project needs someone in the room regularly, such as a plant rollout or shift training, a London firm is the better choice.

Which London, Ontario firms publish their software prices, and how do I shortlist a reputable one?

Of the London software firms we checked on 16 October 2026 (STEP Software, CoreSolutions, ManagePoint Technologies and Acumen Consulting), only ManagePoint prints project prices. Clutch lists about 50 developers for London, some in Kitchener, Tillsonburg or St. Thomas, and says it may earn a fee for some placements. To judge reputation, ask each firm in writing who owns the code and when, what is fixed after launch, and where your data sits.
