Overview

Fixes and upkeep are CAD 30–60 an hour. A new site, a WordPress rebuild or a headless Next.js build gets one CAD figure once the scope is agreed, and it doesn't move afterwards. Ashish has priced 200+ projects worldwide since 2017 and still scopes each website himself. Six months of bug fixes follow every launch, and we set up the .ca, hosting and logins in your name.

Quick answer

Can a team in India build and look after my Canadian business website?

Yes. Codingclave builds from Lucknow and has no office or phone line in Canada. You deal with Ashish Sharma and the developers on your project over WhatsApp and email, with live calls 8am to 12pm Eastern on weekdays, and a 24/7 response for emergencies on live systems. The price is set in CAD once the scope is agreed. You pay in CAD or USD by bank transfer to our Canadian account: 40% at the start, 40% at a mid-project milestone written into the scope (working pages on staging, for example) and 20% at launch. The code and IP pass to you with that last payment.

  • Good fit: a new business site, a WordPress rebuild, or a site another developer walked away from
  • Cheaper elsewhere: a hosted builder, for one location and a few pages
  • You talk to the people doing the work; there is no sales desk
  • At launch you hold the .ca, hosting and admin logins; the code follows with the final payment

Builder, freelancer, studio or a remote team: which suits you?

Pick the route before you pick the firm. A hosted builder (Shopify, Squarespace, Wix, WordPress.com) does the job when you run one location, need a few pages, have nothing to connect and are happy editing it yourself; spend the savings on photos and copy. Pay for a built site when the builder blocks something you need: booking rules it can't express, several editors, a French version, or pages that still load on a weak phone signal.

Four ways to get a business website, compared (published figures read 16 Oct 2026)

If you already have a site: fix, maintain, rebuild on WordPress or move to Next.js

If your WordPress site has slowed down, runs on a theme nobody updates, or was built by a developer who's stopped answering, start with an audit rather than a rebuild. We can take over sites other people built. The audit recovers access, lists every plugin with its last update and licence holder, checks the PHP version and the backups, and ends in a written fix list. Send the URL and you'll hear, free and within a day, what the audit covers and what it costs.

What we usually recommend, by symptom
What you're seeingLikely routeHow it's priced
Locked out of the admin, or the previous developer has goneRecover access, then a written auditAudit quoted once scoped; fixes by the hour
Plugin or PHP warnings, broken forms, a hacked pageFix in place, tested on a staging copy firstCAD 30–60 an hour
Slow on phones, a heavy page builder, an abandoned themeRebuild on WordPress with a lighter themeA fixed CAD price once the scope is agreed
Content changes daily, several editors, speed matters for searchHeadless: Next.js front end, Sanity for editingQuoted once the scope is agreed
Cart, checkout or product problemsSee e-commerce developmentPriced on that page
Member logins, a client portal or an internal workflowSee custom softwarePriced on that page

Rebuilds lose rankings when old URLs aren't redirected; the migration checklist walks through that, and WordPress vs a custom website helps you pick the base.

Website maintenance, month to month. Once the six months of bug fixes end, updates and small changes are billed at CAD 30–60 an hour for the time used. For comparison, Little Dragon in Toronto lists care tiers with 30 minutes of support a month on its first two tiers, and unused time doesn't roll over.

WordPress development and fixes for Canadian businesses

  • Hourly WordPress fixes

A contact form that stopped sending, a white screen after an update, a plugin conflict, a menu that breaks on phones. Each is billed at CAD 30–60 an hour and fixed on a staging copy before it touches the live site.

  • Plugin, theme and PHP upgrades

Moving an older install to a current PHP version usually breaks one or two plugins first. We find which ones on staging, replace or patch them, and only then switch the live server.

  • Speed work on page-builder sites

Heavy page builders, oversized images and a dozen plugins loading on every page are the usual causes. Sometimes trimming is enough; sometimes only a rebuild on a lighter theme will fix it, and you hear which before any hours are spent.

  • WooCommerce

Stores and checkout work sit on the e-commerce development page.

  • English and French on one install

A multilingual plugin can carry both languages with paired URLs and a switcher. We set up the structure and can deliver the French copy too (see the Quebec section below).

Register the .ca yourself, and keep every login

For the domain this is more than good practice. Under CIRA's Canadian Presence Requirements, only the individuals and entities CIRA lists, Canadian citizens among them, may register and hold a .ca, and they do it through a CIRA-certified registrar. Codingclave is an Indian LLP, so you register your .ca and give us access where the work needs it. We recommend the same for every other account, and set each one up in your name.

Before launch day, check each of these is yours:

7 points to check

  1. The domain, at a CIRA-certified registrar.
  2. Hosting, billed to your own card.
  3. The CMS administrator account; ask for our access to be removed at handover if we're not staying on.
  4. Google Analytics and Search Console, owned by you, with user access for us.
  5. Sanity, Stripe and any booking or email tools.
  6. The code repository, transferred with the final payment.
  7. A redirect map from every old URL to its new address, live before the DNS changes.

If a project ends badly, with any firm, you still hold the domain, the hosting and the customer list.

The small figure is how many hours of a 9am–5pm local working day the window covers. Times are worked out from the IANA time-zone database when this page was built. Written replies come within 2 hours, and there is a 24/7 response for emergencies on live sites and apps.

Day to day, the gap works like an overnight shift. Feedback you leave on staging in your afternoon reaches Lucknow in the small hours, so small changes can be waiting when you next look. Bigger changes get an estimate in hours before anyone starts, so you know which list a request is on. Calls are for decisions; detail goes in writing, which leaves you a record.

Websites for gyms, salons, law firms, tutors, wedding planners, immigration consultants and realtors

The site underneath is the same; each trade needs one rule or feature on top. These are things we can build to order, not past projects.

  • Gyms and fitness studios

A class timetable members can filter, online membership sign-up, and recurring billing through your own Stripe account.

  • Salons and spas

Online booking that takes a deposit with the slot and shows your cancellation policy before the client pays.

  • Law firms

Your law society's marketing rules govern the copy, so the firm approves every page, and no results or client quotes go up without its sign-off.

  • Tutors and coaches

Booking against your real availability, payment taken when the session is booked, and email reminders.

  • Wedding planners

Galleries that stay quick on a phone, and an enquiry form that asks for the date, venue and guest count up front.

  • Immigration consultants

Your CICC licence number shown in the wording you confirm against the College's rules, with no outcome promises.

  • Realtors

Does Ontario’s AODA website rule apply to your business?

Only if you have 50 or more employees or are a designated public-sector organization, according to ontario.ca. Smaller firms still carry other duties, just not the website one. The table summarizes the province's pages as read on 16 October 2026.

Ontario accessibility duties by organization size (summarized from ontario.ca, read 16 Oct 2026)
WhoWebsite dutyReportingEvery size also must
Business or non-profit, 1–19 employeesNone under the AODA website ruleNo compliance reportProvide accessible formats on request, on time, and never charge more for them
Business or non-profit, 20–49 employeesNone under the website ruleA compliance report every three years, next due 31 December 2026As above
Business or non-profit, 50+ employeesPublic websites and content published after 1 January 2012 meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA, except live captions (1.2.4) and pre-recorded audio description (1.2.5); a multi-year accessibility plan is posted on the siteA compliance report every three years, next due 31 December 2026As above
Designated public-sector organizationWCAG 2.0 Level AA, with the same two exceptionsSet by the public-sector rules on ontario.caProvide accessible formats on request
  • The site owner carries the duty. Ontario puts it on the organization that controls the website, directly or through a contract, so hiring a developer doesn't move it off you.
  • A business's intranets and extranets are exempt from WCAG 2.0, though alternate formats must still be provided on request.
  • 2.1 or 2.2 is your call. The legal floor is WCAG 2.0 AA, but you can write 2.1 or the current WCAG 2.2 AA into the scope, and we can build and test to the level written there.
  • An overlay widget isn't conformance. A toolbar script leaves the underlying markup as it was, so we don't sell one as a fix.
  • Outside Ontario, check your province's rules before scoping.

Selling to Quebec, collecting emails or running analytics: what changes in the build

Three sets of rules reach into the build: Quebec's language rules, Canada's anti-spam law and Quebec's privacy law. You or your counsel decide how they apply, and we build to that decision.

  • A French version for Quebec customers

The OQLF's guide for businesses says commercial documentation must be at least in French whatever the medium, websites and social networks included. Another language may sit alongside if the French is at least equivalent and as easy to reach, and the duty falls on whoever publishes, even when someone else wrote the content.

We build the bilingual structure: separate language URLs, hreflang tags so search engines pair each page with its translation, and a switcher on every page. We also deliver the French copy, read line by line by a fluent French reviewer; a machine-translation widget never stands in for it.

  • Newsletter and contact forms

ISED's CASL guidance says each commercial email needs consent, sender details and an unsubscribe honoured within 10 business days, and implied consent from an enquiry lasts up to six months. So the newsletter opt-in gets its own unticked box, apart from the contact form, and the site logs when and where each person signed up.

  • Cookies and analytics for Quebec visitors

Law 25 added rules on technology that can identify, locate or profile a person, and McCarthy Tétrault's analysis explains how they reach cookies. We can keep analytics and ad tags off until a visitor opts in, the cautious setting; your counsel makes the call.

  • Your privacy notice

Say plainly that form data is handled by a team in India. The cross-border rules, PIPEDA and Law 25's assessment before data leaves Quebec, are set out on our developer-hiring page rather than repeated here.

  • Hosting region

Canadian regions exist if you want your data kept in Canada: AWS, for one, runs Canada (Central) and Canada West (Calgary). It's your choice, not our default; a Canadian region can cost more than the nearest US one, so the options are priced side by side.

How it works

From your current site, or a blank page, to launch

Start on WhatsApp
  1. Send your URL or a page list

Add your province, whether you sell into Quebec and roughly how many people you employ, since headcount decides the Ontario accessibility rule.

  2. Scope and a fixed CAD price

Pages, features, the WCAG level, the languages and the launch date are written down, and the price is fixed against them.

  3. Design on staging

After the first 40%, work starts on a staging copy you can open on your phone at any point.

  4. Content goes in

Your text and photos are loaded; the French version comes from our side once a fluent French reviewer has checked it.

  5. Mid-project milestone review

The second 40% falls due at the milestone named in your scope, often working pages on staging. Before launch we can test accessibility and speed against the level in the scope.

  6. DNS switch, logins and the final 20%

The final 20% covers the DNS switch, redirects, and handover of logins and code. Six months of bug fixes follow, then hourly help if you want it.

FAQ

Common questions about hiring us from Canada

Can’t see yours? Ask on WhatsApp and get a straight answer, not a sales script. Replies come within 2 hours.

Founder-led by Ashish Sharma

Ask on WhatsApp

What do you charge for a website, and how long does one take?

A new site gets a fixed CAD price once the scope is agreed, and fixes or upkeep run CAD 30–60 an hour. The launch date is written into the same scope, next to the price, and what usually moves it is how quickly the text and photos arrive. The website cost guide compares prices across Canada.

Do I own the website, the code and the .ca domain when it's finished?

Yes. CIRA only lets eligible Canadian registrants hold a .ca, so the domain is registered in your name from the start, and we recommend the hosting, CMS admin and analytics are too. The code and IP pass to you with the final payment. If you ever move to another developer, you hand over logins you already hold.

Is a custom website still worth it in 2026, or is Wix or Shopify enough?

For a single shop with a few pages, a builder is often enough. The cost shows up later: the design rarely moves with you when you outgrow it, so you pay for a rebuild, not an upgrade. If you expect bookings, a French version or several editors within a year or two, building once on WordPress or Next.js usually costs less over that time. Mostly selling products? See the Shopify store cost guide.

How do I choose a web development company in Canada?

Ignore list position: on Clutch, sponsored and featured firms come first. Ask for reviews you can open on the platform itself, a domain registered in your name, a WCAG version in the contract and a price in CAD. The full set of questions, with our answers, is in the checklist above; hold every firm on your shortlist to it.

Can you take over a WordPress site another developer built?

Yes. Takeovers start with access: the registrar, hosting and WordPress admin logins, plus licence keys for premium plugins and themes, often still in the old developer's name. The site is then copied to staging, the plugins and PHP version are checked, and you get a written fix list. The audit is quoted after a first look, and fixes are billed at CAD 30–60 an hour.

Can I hire a WordPress developer by the hour for maintenance?

Yes. After the six months of free bug fixes that follow a launch, updates, fixes and small changes are billed at CAD 30–60 an hour for time used. Fixed plans elsewhere cap what you get: Parachute Design lists maintenance from CAD 600 a month, and some Toronto care tiers include 30 minutes of support. Hourly billing suits a site that needs a little work most months.

Does the AODA apply to my small business website?

The website rule doesn't, unless you have 50 or more employees: Ontario requires WCAG 2.0 Level AA only from designated public-sector bodies and from businesses or non-profits with 50+ staff. With 20 to 49 employees you still file a compliance report every three years, next due 31 December 2026, and every Ontario business or non-profit with at least one employee must provide accessible formats on request at no extra charge.

Which WCAG version does Ontario require: 2.0, 2.1 or 2.2?

WCAG 2.0 Level AA for web content published after 1 January 2012, minus live captions (1.2.4) and pre-recorded audio description (1.2.5), according to ontario.ca (page updated 21 September 2026). WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 add success criteria, including ones on keyboard focus and target size, and you can choose either at AA instead. Whatever you pick goes into the scope, and we can build and test to it.

Does my website need a French version if I sell in Quebec?

Usually, yes: the OQLF treats a business website as commercial documentation that must be at least in French. In practice that means real French pages at their own URLs, kept as current as the English ones, not a translate button. Budget for the French copy, which we can deliver with a fluent French reviewer, and for updating both languages whenever a page changes. Your counsel can confirm how the rule applies to you.

Are there government grants for a business website, and can I capitalize the cost?

The federal program most owners remember has ended: the Canada Digital Adoption Program concluded on 31 March 2025, according to ISED, and its website grant went with it. Provincial or regional programs may still exist, so check your province's small-business site. Whether you capitalize or deduct the cost is a question for your accountant; we can itemize the work in the quote so they can classify it.
