Overview
Our team builds remotely from Lucknow, India; I'm Ashish Sharma, the founder who reads your catalogue and sets the price. Fixes run CAD 30–60 an hour. A new store sits in our CAD 1,500–12,000 band, and every build or move gets one fixed price once the scope is agreed.

Quick answer
WooCommerce or Shopify: which should a Canadian online store run on?
Stay on WooCommerce if articles bring your traffic, if wholesale or B2B pricing runs the catalogue, or if you want to choose your own host. Move to Shopify if nobody on your side wants to keep WordPress, PHP and plugins patched. Card fees rarely decide it: on a CAD 100 sale, WooPayments or Stripe takes CAD 3.20 and Shopify Payments on Basic takes CAD 3.10. Where they differ is Moneris, which WooCommerce leaves alone and Shopify Basic tops up with its own 2%.
- Fees read 16 October 2026, in CAD, on a Canadian card before sales tax
- Moneris on Shopify Basic: your Moneris rate plus Shopify's 2%
- A move turns /product/ into /products/, so each old URL needs a 301
- Plan prices tier by tier: the Shopify cost guide for Canada

Build, fix or move: the three store jobs we take on
Most store work I'm asked to price is one of three jobs. Send the URL and I'll tell you which one yours is, and whether it's an hourly job or a fixed-price one. If you only need a site with no checkout, the WordPress website cost guide is the better place to start.
A new store on WooCommerce or Shopify
Products and collections, checkout, sales tax from your own registrations, Canada Post or flat-rate shipping, and the refund, delivery, terms and contact pages. A typical store takes 2–6 weeks from agreed scope to first real order.
A WooCommerce store that already trades
A plugin conflict, a checkout error, an overdue PHP or WooCommerce upgrade, slow product pages, a shipping rate that vanished overnight. This is hourly work. When one fix is all you need, a developer for a few hours is enough, and I'll say so.
WooCommerce to Shopify
A move planned around the redirect map, with a plain list of what an export leaves behind agreed before anything is imported.
Integrations
Stripe is the gateway we set up most often. Moneris, PayPal, Canada Post or an inventory feed goes in through the provider's own plugin or API. When no plugin does what your store needs, a wholesale price rule or an odd shipping zone, we can build that piece.

What store owners ask before hiring us from India
How do the hours work across a 9½ to 10½ hour gap?
Lucknow is 10½ hours ahead of Toronto in winter and 9½ in summer. Most store work needs nobody awake at once: notes you leave on staging at the end of your day are usually worked on before your next morning. Kickoff, staging review, domain switch and test order happen live in the window below, which is my evening.
How can I judge the work before paying for a build?
For Shopify, open Richa Khemka: our build for a Kolkata fashion designer who sells her clothing collections there. For WooCommerce, look at the online pharmacy store for Anand Medico Chemist in India; the live site has since moved to a different stack. No client migration of ours is public yet, so start small if you like: one paid hourly fix on your current store, judged before you commit to a build.
Is Codingclave in Shopify’s partner program?
No, and your store doesn't need it. You open the Shopify account in your business's name and add us as staff, and you can remove that access whenever you like.
When do I pay, and when is it mine?
A fixed-price build is paid in three parts: 40% to start, 40% at the mid-project milestone named in your quote, and 20% at launch. The code and IP become yours on that final payment.
What if the store breaks after launch?
For 6 months after launch, any bug in our work is fixed at no charge. A live store that stops taking orders gets a 24/7 emergency response, whatever the hour.

WooPayments, Stripe or Moneris: fees on a taxed Canadian order
Card fees are normally charged on the full amount the customer pays, sales tax included. A CAD 100 basket is a CAD 113 charge in Ontario with 13% HST, and CAD 105 in Alberta with 5% GST, at the CRA's published rates (all provinces). This table is written from the WooCommerce side, with Shopify Basic beside it for comparison.
| Set-up | Rate | On CAD 100 | On CAD 113 (Ontario, 13% HST) | International card on CAD 100 (Shopify: also Amex) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WooCommerce + WooPayments | 2.9% + 30¢ | 3.20 | 3.58 | 4.20 (1% surcharge) |
| WooCommerce + Stripe | 2.9% + 30¢ | 3.20 | 3.58 | 4.00 (0.8% surcharge) |
| WooCommerce + the Moneris extension | Your Moneris rate; no per-sale fee from WooCommerce (the extension itself is paid) | Moneris's rate | Moneris's rate | Moneris's rate |
| Shopify Basic + Shopify Payments | 2.8% + 30¢ | 3.10 | 3.46 | 3.80 (3.5% + 30¢) |
| Shopify Basic + Moneris or another provider | Provider's rate + Shopify's 2% | Provider's fee + 2.00 | Provider's fee + 2.26 | Provider's fee + 2.00 |
- The CAD 113 column assumes fees on the tax-inclusive charge: normal card practice, but our inference, so check your first payout.
- Currency conversion adds 2% on WooPayments and on Stripe.
- Disputes cost CAD 20 each on WooPayments, refunded if you challenge one and win. Stripe charges CAD 15 per dispute, plus CAD 15 if you counter it; the counter fee comes back if you win.
- WooPayments lists Canadian fees in plain dollars; we read them as CAD.
Grow, Advanced and Plus lower Shopify's surcharge on outside providers to 1%, 0.6% and 0.2%; per-plan figures are in the cost guide's CAD 100 table. WooCommerce is free to download, so hosting, a theme and paid extensions are its running cost.

WooCommerce and Shopify checkout in Canada: GST/HST, Canada Post and Moneris
A checkout should charge only the taxes you are registered for: GST/HST under your federal number, plus QST or British Columbia, Saskatchewan or Manitoba PST where you hold those registrations too. The CRA publishes the rates. Registering federally is compulsory when you go over CAD 30,000 of taxable sales, whether in a single calendar quarter or across the last four quarters combined, as Shopify Help sets out. Your accountant confirms where you stand.
| Job | On WooCommerce | On Shopify | What you supply |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales tax | Canadian rates typed into the tax-rate table or imported by CSV, or the WooCommerce Tax extension, which supports Canadian stores and calculates at checkout but doesn't file or remit | Settings > Taxes and duties > Canada, collecting per registered region. Basic Tax is only offered where the store collected Canadian tax before 13 May 2026; otherwise Shopify Tax or manual rates | GST/HST number (123456789RT0001 format), plus any QST or PST numbers |
| Canada Post rates | Canada Post Shipping Method extension (paid yearly): live commercial or counter rates from your own account; needs Canada as base country, CAD, and a weight and dimensions on every product | Shopify Shipping, or a Canada Post app using third-party calculated rates, which Basic doesn't include (an add-on on Grow, included on Advanced and Plus) | A Canada Post account, which is free to register |
| Canada Post labels | The extension's listing describes rates only, so labels come from a separate label plugin on the same account | Shopify Shipping or a Canada Post app; check what your plan includes | Parcel sizes and weights |
| Moneris | Official extension on Moneris Checkout: Canadian merchants only, CAD store currency, Subscriptions and Pre-Orders supported; Apple Pay isn't compatible with the Cart and Checkout blocks | Counts as a third-party provider, so Shopify's 0.2–2% applies on top; confirm with Moneris that it covers your online checkout | A Moneris merchant account and Checkout profile |
| Stripe or Shopify Payments | Stripe's plugin, or WooPayments | Shopify Payments, with no extra Shopify fee | The account in your business's name |
Moneris and the Canada Post tools are set-ups we can do; Stripe is the one we do most. Get your tax and shipping set-up priced.

Stay on WooCommerce, move to Shopify, or run both
We charge the same hourly band on either platform, so which one you pick doesn't change our bill. Here is how I'd decide.
Reasons to stay on WooCommerce
Articles and guides bring the traffic, and they live in WordPress. Wholesale tiers or B2B rules run the catalogue. You want to pick the host, a Canadian data centre included. Or you take Moneris payments and don't want Shopify's surcharge on every sale.
Reasons to move to Shopify
Nobody keeps WordPress, PHP and the plugins current, and every update is a risk to checkout. Your current gateway charges more than 2.8% + 30¢ on Canadian cards. You want fewer moving parts between cart and payout. Shopify hosts the store, so you give up the choice of server region.
Running both
The WordPress blog stays and Shopify runs the shop, through Shopify's Buy Button on WordPress pages or a shop subdomain, with stock synced by an app or an integration we build. What it costs you is upkeep: WordPress still needs patching, and sales and blog traffic are read in two places.

WooCommerce to Shopify: the redirect map comes before the products
Products and customers come across through Shopify's imports, and blog posts are copied over separately. Every address changes, though: Shopify puts products under /products/ and categories under /collections/, so each URL that earned clicks or links needs a 301. I write the redirect map myself from your crawl before anyone imports a product, because it decides every handle on the new store, and it's the part a cheap migration skips.
| WooCommerce URL | Shopify destination | Note |
|---|---|---|
| /product/blue-mug/ | /products/blue-mug | Fixed prefix; keep the old slug as the handle |
| /product-category/mugs/ | /collections/mugs | Nested categories flatten into single collections |
| /shop/ | /collections/all | Shopify's catch-all collection |
| /product-tag/gift/ | The closest collection | No direct equivalent |
| /shipping-policy/ (a WordPress page) | /policies/shipping-policy or /pages/shipping-policy | Shopify's built-in policies sit under /policies/; a policy written as an ordinary page sits under /pages/ |
| /2024/05/post-name/ or /blog/post-name/ | /blogs/news/post-name | "news" is the usual default blog handle; check yours |
| /?product=123 and other parameter URLs | That product's new URL | Found in Search Console, not the sitemap |
| /my-account/ | /account | Customers sign in again here |
- Export every live URL from the sitemap, a full crawl and Search Console's top pages, which catch addresses the sitemap forgot.
- Rank them by clicks and inbound links. On most stores a small share of URLs carries most of the search traffic (the 80/20 pattern), and I check those by hand. Every other URL still gets a redirect, and none is dumped on the home page.
- Build the redirect CSV and bulk-import it under Content > Menus > View URL redirects, before the domain moves.
- Switch the domain on a quiet sales day, during the call window, on a call with you.
- Submit Shopify's sitemap.xml in Search Console and watch the crawl errors.
- Expect re-indexing to take what Shopify Help calls "anywhere from a few days to a few weeks".
For staging blocks, canonicals and the first month after the switch, read the separate checklist on our blog. Send your WooCommerce store for a migration quote.

What a WooCommerce export leaves behind
Five things don't move by themselves: reviews, customer passwords, subscriptions, order history and products with more than 3 options. Shopify Help covers them on separate pages, so here they are in one place.
| Item | What happens | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Product reviews | Can't be exported or migrated | Re-imported with a reviews app (Judge.me, Loox, Yotpo) |
| Customer passwords | Can't be migrated by CSV; customers are invited to create new ones | Account invites sent after launch, timed with a short note from you |
| Subscriptions | Moved by third-party apps, not Shopify, and only with Shopify Payments, Stripe or Authorize.net as the primary gateway | Planned with the subscription app; old billing paused on switch day so nobody pays twice |
| Order history | Not in the standard import; Shopify points to LitExtension, Matrixify or Ablestar | Imported with one of them if customers need to see past orders |
| Products with more than 3 options | Shopify allows 3; extra options aren't imported | Split into separate products, or the variants restructured |
| Weights | Shopify's product file takes grams | Converted from your WooCommerce unit (lb ×453.6, kg ×1,000) and spot-checked against shipping rates |
| Marketing consent | A yes or no column; Shopify says to email only customers who opted in | Your recorded CASL consent carries across; nobody is switched to yes |
The free route, Shopify's Store Migration app (early access, desktop only) or a product CSV, suits a few dozen simple products with no subscriptions. Order history, subscriptions, products past 3 options or pages with search traffic are where paid help earns its cost. Ask whether the free tools are enough for your store.

Launch day: the test order we place together
Handover isn't an email with a login. The refund, delivery, terms and contact pages go live, and one real order goes through on a call with you. If a line below fails, we fix it and run the order again, and we don't hand over until every line passes.
| Check | How we test it | Passes when |
|---|---|---|
| Tax | Orders to Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia postal codes | 13% HST, GST plus QST (9.975%) or GST plus BC PST (7%), each only where you're registered |
| Shipping | A Canada Post rate for a real postal code | It matches the commercial or counter rate on your account |
| Payment | A live card through your gateway | The charge shows in your Stripe, Moneris or Shopify Payments dashboard |
| Refund | A full refund from the store admin | It shows as refunded in the gateway dashboard, and the customer email goes out |
| Emails | Order confirmation and an abandoned-cart reminder | Opt-in box unticked by default; unsubscribe works; refund, delivery, terms and contact links open from the footer |
| Redirects (moves only) | The top old URLs plus a random sample | One 301 each to the right page, with no chains |
| French (Quebec stores) | The language switcher and the order-confirmation email | Your approved French shows on product, cart and checkout pages and in the email |
| Accounts | We list every login and who owns it | Shopify owner or WordPress admin, domain, gateway, Canada Post and Search Console are all in your name, and our staff access can be removed |

Quebec French, AODA and CASL: what your store has to do
These duties sit with the business that sells, not with whoever built its store. We build to the written requirements you or your counsel set.
| Rule | Applies to | What the store needs | Who answers for it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quebec's Charter of the French language, s.52 | Businesses in Quebec; sellers elsewhere who market to Quebec shoppers should ask counsel whether it reaches them | Commercial publications in French, which the OQLF's 14 November 2025 notice applied to those on a website. Our reading: the catalogue, product pages and promotions | The business; we supply the French copy, checked by a fluent French reviewer |
| Ontario's AODA | Ontario businesses and non-profits with 50 or more employees, and designated public sector bodies | WCAG 2.0 Level AA on the public website since 1 January 2021 | The organisation controlling the site (Ontario's guidance) |
| CASL | Commercial email and texts; treat abandoned-cart reminders as commercial | Consent before sending, sender identification and a working unsubscribe; we build the opt-in box unticked | The sender, who must be able to show consent; the most serious violations can reach CAD 10 million for a business (ISED) |
We deliver the French copy, a fluent French reviewer checks it, and you sign it off. We build the bilingual structure around it: WPML or Polylang on WooCommerce, or Shopify's language settings, with a switcher on product, cart and checkout pages. Plan a French storefront.

How we put this page together
Written by Ashish Sharma, who scopes and prices Codingclave's store projects. Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe, CRA, Ontario, OQLF and ISED pages were read on 16 October 2026; the CAD 100 and CAD 113 fee figures are our arithmetic from those published rates. Only the hourly rate, the store band and the payment terms are our own figures.
