Overview
Shopify bills you separately for the plan, card fees, apps and any paid theme, and this guide prices each of those from Shopify's own pages.

Quick answer
How much does it cost to have someone build a Shopify store?
With us, $600–$1,200 for a store on a ready-made theme, $1,200–$2,500 when the theme is customized and products move over from another platform, and $2,500–$3,500 for a custom theme from your design, each a fixed price once the scope is agreed. Shopify's own costs come on top: $39 a month on Basic or $105 on Grow, billed monthly, card fees from 2.9% + 30¢ per online sale, apps, and a theme if you buy one. The smallest of the three example stores below comes to $1,134–$1,734 for its first year before card fees.
- Theme setup: $600–$1,200, 2–3 weeks
- Customized theme with apps and a product move: $1,200–$2,500, 3–5 weeks
- Custom theme from your Figma design: $2,500–$3,500, 4–6 weeks
- Shopify and the app makers bill their fees to you directly
- Free bug fixes for 6 months after launch

Three build tiers, and what each one leaves out
Most Shopify builds take one of three shapes. The tier depends on how far the design moves away from a ready-made theme and how much data has to come across from an old store, not on the number of pages.
| Tier | What you get | Price and weeks | Not included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Theme setup | A free or paid theme from the Shopify Theme Store set up with your logo, colors and fonts; your products loaded from a spreadsheet (the quote states how many); Shopify Payments, shipping zones and rates, tax settings; refund, delivery, terms and contact pages | $600–$1,200, 2–3 weeks | Custom sections, product photos, copywriting, the price of a paid theme |
| Customized theme | Everything in theme setup, plus custom sections and templates, apps installed and configured (reviews, email, subscriptions), and products and customers moved from WooCommerce, Wix or Squarespace with redirects from the old addresses | $1,200–$2,500, 3–5 weeks | App subscriptions, which each app bills to you; past orders unless the quote lists them |
| Custom theme | A theme coded in Liquid from your Figma design, with sections and blocks your team can edit in the theme editor, plus everything in the other two tiers | $2,500–$3,500, 4–6 weeks | The Figma design itself (quoted as UI/UX work), custom apps, Shopify Plus checkout work |
Where a store lands inside its band depends on the product count, the variants and filters each product needs, and how many apps have to be set up and tested together. The written quote names the tier and the figure. Stores that need Shopify Plus, a custom app or a headless front end are quoted on their own.

What Shopify itself charges a US store in 2026
Shopify bills you directly, and none of it passes through us. Shopify shows prices by the visitor's country, and from India its pricing page lists rupees, so the US figures below come from the Internet Archive's copy of shopify.com/pricing captured on October 24, 2026, which shows the US prices. The plan line-up matched the live pricing page when we checked it on October 25, 2026.
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly, per month | Online card rate | Card in person | Extra fee with another payment provider | Staff accounts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39 | $29 | 2.9% + 30¢ | 2.6% + 10¢ | 2% | None |
| Grow | $105 | $79 or $89 | 2.7% + 30¢ | 2.5% + 10¢ | 1% | 5 |
| Advanced | $399 | $299 or $359 | 2.5% + 30¢ | 2.4% + 10¢ | 0.6% | 15 |
| Plus | From $2,300 | Not listed | 2.25% + 30¢ | 2.3% + 10¢ | 0.2% | Unlimited |
Four details change what a store actually pays:
- Premium and international cards. Online premium card rates were 3.5%, 3.3%, 3.1% and 2.95% plus 30¢ across the four plans, and a card issued outside the US adds 1%.
- Yearly prices moved during October. Copies of the page captured on different days showed Grow at $79 or $89 a month and Advanced at $299 or $359 on yearly billing. The monthly-billing prices were the same in every copy, so check the yearly figure on the screen where you pay.
- The trial offer. When we read the page, a new store got 3 days free and then $1 a month for 3 months. The example totals further down leave that offer out, because its terms change.
- Sales tax is not a Shopify fee. What you collect from buyers depends on the states where your business has to register, which is a question for your accountant.

How much Shopify takes from a $10 sale
On Basic with Shopify Payments, a $10 online card sale costs 59¢ in fees, so $9.41 reaches your payout. The table runs the same sale through each plan and each way a customer can pay, using the rates above. It is our arithmetic on Shopify's published rates, not a figure Shopify prints.
| How the customer pays | Basic | Grow | Advanced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard card online, Shopify Payments | 59¢ (you keep $9.41) | 57¢ (you keep $9.43) | 55¢ (you keep $9.45) |
| Premium card online | 65¢ | 63¢ | 61¢ |
| Card issued outside the US | 69¢ | 67¢ | 65¢ |
| Card in person, Shopify POS | 36¢ | 35¢ | 34¢ |
| Another payment provider at 2.9% + 30¢ | 79¢ (20¢ to Shopify, 59¢ to the provider) | 69¢ (10¢ to Shopify) | 65¢ (6¢ to Shopify) |
The fixed costs weigh most on small orders. The 30¢ is 3% of a $10 sale but 0.3% of a $100 one, and the plan fee spreads across every order: $39 a month over 100 orders is 39¢ each. A store that sells mostly low-priced items should set prices with both in mind. Moving up a plan pays off on card fees alone only at high volume: Grow's online rate sits 0.2 percentage points under Basic's, which saves $2 per $1,000 of card sales, while Grow costs $66 more a month on monthly billing. The break-even is about $33,000 of online card sales a month; below that, choose Grow for its staff seats or shipping features, not for the card rate.

First-year totals for three example stores
Each example adds the build price to twelve months of Shopify and the apps that store needs, at the prices read on October 24 and 25, 2026. Card fees are left out because they follow your sales. The first store pays one month of Grow while the build runs, for the reason explained under store access.
| Example store | Build | Shopify, 12 months | Theme | Apps, 12 months | Year-one total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example store 1: a 40-product candle shop on a free theme, on Basic after launch | $600–$1,200 (theme setup) | $534: one build month on Grow at $105, then 11 months of Basic at $39 | $0, a free theme | $0: Judge.me reviews and Shopify Email on their free plans | $1,134–$1,734 |
| Example store 2: 300 skincare products moved from WooCommerce, with subscriptions, on Grow | $1,200–$2,500 (customized theme) | $1,260: Grow at $105 a month | $320, a one-time paid theme | $1,608: Recharge Starter at $99, Klaviyo email at $20 and Judge.me at $15 a month | $4,388–$5,688, plus Recharge's 1.49% + 19¢ per subscription order |
| Example store 3: a 90-product furniture brand with a custom theme from its Figma file, on Grow | $2,500–$3,500 (custom theme) | $1,260: Grow at $105 a month | $0: the theme is the build | $240: Klaviyo email at $20 a month, reviews on Judge.me's free plan | $4,000–$5,000 |
Two lines deserve a second look against your own plans. A store that runs on Basic needs no staff seats after launch, so its build month on Grow is a one-off $66 difference on monthly billing. Apps are where the second year grows: each one bills monthly, and a dozen modest subscriptions can cost more than Shopify itself. Our quote lists every app the scope needs and what each one costs, so the running total is known before the build starts.

Apps and themes: what they cost, and what you can’t get back
A paid theme is a one-time purchase with no refund
The Shopify Theme Store listed 24 free and 1,323 paid themes on October 25, 2026, and the paid ones we sampled across its pages cost $100 to $500. Shopify's refund policy makes theme purchases final sale, though you can try any theme in your store before buying it. So the theme you are weighing goes onto an unpublished copy with your own products first, and you buy it only once you have seen them in it.
Apps bill every month
Prices on the Shopify App Store, read on October 25, 2026: Judge.me reviews are free, or $15 a month on its Awesome plan. Klaviyo is free up to 250 active profiles and 500 emails a month, then $20 a month for 251–500 contacts. Recharge subscriptions cost $25 a month with no transaction fees for the first 50 subscribers, or $99 a month plus 1.49% + 19¢ per transaction on Starter. Shopify Email sends your first 10,000 emails a month free. Some apps bill you outside your Shopify invoice, and refunds for third-party apps are up to each app's developer, not Shopify.
Fewer apps, each one tested
Every app adds code or settings to the store, and an app can leave snippets in the theme after you remove it. Before adding one, check whether the theme or a built-in Shopify feature already does the job. In a build, each app in the scope is installed on the unpublished theme, tested on a phone and a desktop, and listed in the handover notes with its monthly price.

Build it yourself, hire a freelancer, or hire a team
Paying someone is not always the right call. This is how the three routes compare for a US store owner.
Do it yourself
A free theme, a few dozen products and flat-rate shipping are within reach of an owner with a free weekend and Shopify's setup screens. You pay only Shopify's fees. It stops being cheap when the job needs a migration with redirects, products with many variants, or a design the theme editor can't produce, because the hours go into learning instead of selling.
A freelancer
On Upwork's page for Shopify developers in India, read on October 25, 2026, visible profiles ranged from about $10 to $30 an hour, and Upwork put the typical global rate at $15 to $29 an hour. A good freelancer suits a defined job. The risk is that one person holds the whole store, so ask who covers a holiday or a sick week before launch.
An agency or a team
A Shopify agency's 2026 cost guide puts a startup launch at $2,500 to $4,000 and a growing direct-to-consumer brand at $5,000 to $15,000 (ECORN). With us, the same jobs sit in the $600–$3,500 tiers above, because a team in Lucknow costs less to run. What you give up is a shared working day: our hours fall in the US night, so reviews and feedback travel in writing.

We are not a Shopify Partner: what that changes for your store
Shopify Partners are agencies and developers enrolled in Shopify's partner program. We are not one. For a store owner that changes one thing: how we get into your store.
You own the store from the first day
You open the store with your own email, choose the plan and connect your own bank account to Shopify Payments. We never ask for your owner login. Everything we build lives in your account, and all source code and IP, including a custom theme, pass to you on final payment.
We work through a staff account
You add us as a staff member with the permissions the job needs, and remove us after handover or when a care plan ends. Shopify's help center says stores on the Basic or Starter plan can't add staff users, while Grow allows 5 staff accounts and Advanced 15.
If your store will run on Basic
Keep it on Grow for the build month, then move it down. Shopify applies a change to Basic at the end of the current billing cycle, so on monthly billing the build month costs $105 instead of $39. The other route is collaborator access, which uses no staff seat and works on every plan, but it can only be requested from a Shopify Partner account, and we don't have one.
When to hire a Shopify Partner instead
If you want a developer listed in Shopify's directory, or an agency that builds the store in its own account and then transfers it to you, look for a Shopify Partner. For a store on Grow or a higher plan, a staff account gives us everything a build needs.

What gets checked before the store goes live
A Shopify build with us takes 2–6 weeks, and its last days go to these checks, the ones that cost sales when they are skipped.
Policy and contact pages
Refund, delivery, terms and contact pages written into the store with your business name, return address and support email, and linked from the footer and the checkout. Payment providers can ask to see them when they review a new store.
The payment setup
Shopify Payments needs your business details, bank account and identity checks completed in your name. We send you Shopify's setup checklist with a note on each step, so nothing is still pending when the first order arrives.
Shipping and tax settings
Shipping zones and rates match what the product pages promise, including any free-shipping threshold. Tax collection is switched on for the states you tell us you collect in.
A live test order, placed together
Before handover, a real order goes through on a live card with you, and we check the confirmation email, the order in your admin and the payout line before refunding it. A test-mode order proves the theme works; only a live one proves the payment path does.
Redirects for a moved store
When a store moves from WooCommerce, Wix or Squarespace, the old product and page addresses are redirected to their new Shopify ones, so links, bookmarks and search results keep working.

A Shopify storefront you can open, and store work beside it
We don't name US clients on this page. This is a store you can open yourself today, plus one we can only describe.
Shopify
richakhemka.com, a Shopify storefront we worked on (the site's footer credits Overnight Digital), for a Kolkata fashion designer. Open a product page on a phone and see how the images, the product options and the cart behave.
WooCommerce, if you are weighing it against Shopify
We built a WooCommerce pharmacy store for Anand Medico Chemist. That site has since switched platforms, so our version can't be opened, but it shows the other route: WooCommerce runs on WordPress hosting you control, with no monthly Shopify fee but with updates and hosting to look after.

How we put this page together
Written with AI help and checked against the sources below on October 25, 2026; Ashish Sharma reviews it before it goes live. Shopify shows prices by the visitor's country, and its pricing page lists rupees when read from India, so the US plan prices, card rates and staff limits come from the Internet Archive's October 24, 2026 copy of shopify.com/pricing, compared with its copies from September 1, October 15 and October 19, 2026. The Shopify Help Center, Theme Store, App Store, Upwork, ECORN and W3Techs figures were read live on October 25, 2026. The $10-sale and first-year tables are our arithmetic on those figures. Every build and care price on this page is ours: the e-commerce band of our USD price list, split into three Shopify tiers in October 2026.
