Hire Indian developers from the US: 2026 rates, contracts and vetting
What an Indian developer costs depends on who is quoting and what the figure measures: a marketplace's past contracts, a firm's list price or an employee's salary.

Overview
This page sets published rates side by side, read in October 2026, with their sources and dates, then covers the four ways US companies hire in India, what a dedicated-developer contract should say, and how to vet a team before paying, ours included. We place developers by the month too, quoted once we know the stack and the hours.

Quick answer
What does an Indian developer cost a US company in 2026?
Upwork's own pages, read on October 25, 2026, put Indian web developers at $16–$35 an hour and app developers at $18–$39, based on past contracts. Wise's guide for US businesses puts juniors at $15–$25, mid-level engineers at $25–$40 and senior specialists at $40–$50 an hour. At 160 hours a month, $25 an hour comes to $4,000. Figures outside those ranges exist at both ends, so ask what a number measures before comparing it. We quote a monthly developer once we know the stack and the hours; this page lists no rate of ours.
- Marketplace rates describe past contracts, not quotes
- Salary figures are employee pay, not what a contractor bills
- Get a named developer, the hours and a notice period in writing
- Our developers keep IST hours, not US hours

Indian developer rates in 2026, source by source
Each figure below was read on the page linked in its row, on the date shown. They measure different things, which is why they disagree: Upwork's web developer cost page reports $16–$35 an hour from past contracts, while its Indian programmers page lists $30, $57 and $179 an hour for beginner, intermediate and advanced. On top of the freelancer's rate, Upwork charges clients a 5% service fee on its Basic plan.
| Source | What it measures | Figure | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upwork: Indian web developers | Typical hourly ranges of past contracts on Upwork | $16–$35 an hour | Read October 25, 2026 |
| Upwork: Indian app developers | Typical hourly ranges of past contracts on Upwork | $18–$39 an hour | Read October 25, 2026 |
| Upwork: Indian programmers | Rates typically charged, by experience | $30 beginner, $57 intermediate, $179 advanced, an hour | Read October 25, 2026 |
| Wise: hiring developers in India, for US businesses | Contract rates by level | $15–$25 junior, $25–$40 mid-level, $40–$50 senior, an hour | Dated October 24, 2025 |
| Arc: freelance developers in India | The range across Arc's freelancers in India | $10–$80 an hour | Read October 25, 2026 |
| Payscale: software developer salary in India | Average employee salary, from 1,799 salary profiles | About $7,500 a year: 712,061 rupees at the Federal Reserve's 94.96 rupees per dollar | Updated October 10, 2026 |
| US Bureau of Labor Statistics: software developers | US median annual wage, for comparison | $135,980 a year (May 2025) | Read October 25, 2026 |
Three readings keep these numbers honest. A salary is not a contract rate: the Payscale figure is what an employee in India is paid, and a contractor or a firm bills well above it to cover tools, gaps between projects, leave, taxes and margin. An hourly rate becomes a monthly cost at about 160 hours: $25 an hour is $4,000 a month, and $40 an hour is $6,400. And marketplace ranges describe past contracts, so the rate a strong developer quotes you this month can sit at the top of the range or above it.

Four ways to hire in India, and who each one suits
A freelancer on a marketplace
Upwork, Arc and similar platforms keep reviews, escrow and dispute handling in one place, and Upwork charges clients a 5% service fee on its Basic plan or 10% on Business Plus (Upwork pricing). It suits a defined task you can manage yourself, and if you already have a freelancer you trust there, keeping the work on the platform is often the right call. Our own profile shows 5.0 from 35 Upwork reviews, and work found there should be hired there. The risk is one person: a holiday, a better-paid contract or an illness stops the work.
An Employer of Record
An Employer of Record employs the developer in India on your behalf and runs payroll, contracts and compliance; Wise's guide describes it as the way to hire directly without an Indian company of your own. You choose the person and direct the work. It suits a long-term hire you want on your own team, and you take on the recruiting, the management and the provider's monthly fee.
A large Indian IT services firm
Account managers, a bench of replacements and formal processes, with pricing and contracts built for large programs. It suits programs that run several teams for years, or a procurement department that needs a large supplier. For one or two developers it is usually more structure than the work needs.
A small founder-led team
That is us: Codingclave, run by Ashish Sharma in Lucknow. You deal with the founder, the developer works inside your repository and your tickets, and a fixed-price project is on the table whenever the scope can be written down. The trade-off is a smaller bench, so ask how a holiday or a resignation is covered before you sign, with us or anyone else.

What a dedicated developer should mean in the contract
Dedicated is a sales word until a contract defines it. These are the clauses to get in writing from any vendor. Where a term is already fixed on our side, the item says so; everything else is agreed in writing before the developer starts.
A named developer
The contract names the person, with a code sample or a repository you can read, and says what happens if the vendor wants to swap them for someone else.
Hours, days and holidays
The hours a month (about 160 for full-time work), the working days and the public holidays. Ours: Mon–Sat 10:00–19:00 IST, with Sundays and Indian public holidays off, such as Republic Day (January 26), Independence Day (August 15), Gandhi Jayanti (October 2) and festival days whose dates move each year.
Notice and replacement
How much notice either side gives to end the arrangement, and how fast a replacement takes over if the developer leaves, including the handover between them. With us, both are set in the agreement before the start.
Code, accounts and access
The code goes into your repository from the first commit, on accounts your company owns, and access is removed on the last day. On our projects, all source code and IP pass to you on final payment; for monthly work, the point at which each month's code becomes yours is written into the agreement.
How progress reaches you
A written note at the end of each working day, pull requests your team reviews, and a video call when you ask for one, at a time agreed in writing.
One monthly figure
One price for the agreed hours, what happens to hours that go unused, and the billing date. With us the monthly price is quoted once we know the stack and the hours, and it is paid in US dollars by direct bank transfer to our USD account.

Our developers keep Indian hours, not US hours
Our working day runs Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 19:00 IST, and our developers keep it; they don't switch to US hours. During US daylight time (second Sunday in March to first Sunday in November) that is 12:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Eastern, so a 9-to-5 Eastern day shares its first 30 minutes with ours; in US standard time it is 11:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Eastern and shares none. On the Pacific coast our day falls in your night in both seasons. The table shows every US zone.
What works across the gap
Tickets written at the end of your day, pull requests reviewed in your morning and, if you want one, a short written note from the developer when their day ends. A team that already works in writing barely notices the gap.
What doesn’t
A developer at your 10 a.m. standup every day, pair programming in US hours, or same-day fixes during your business day. If the role needs those, hire in the Americas or choose a vendor whose developers keep US hours, and check that the contract says so.
Calls by agreement
A video call at a time agreed in writing, for example at the start of your day, which is the end of ours. There is no standing US call window.

When a fixed-price project beats a monthly developer
A monthly developer makes sense when the work is a backlog with no end date: a product already in production, a queue of features, an agency's steady flow. When the work can be written down as a scope, a fixed price usually costs less and moves the risk of an overrun to the vendor.
Choose a fixed price when
you can describe the first version on two pages, you need one figure for the budget, and you would rather review results than manage hours. Custom software projects with us run $2,500–$15,000, priced once the scope is agreed; MVP development cost and custom software development cost break that down by tier.
Choose a monthly developer when
the backlog changes every week, your own team sets the priorities, and you want the same person learning your codebase month after month.
Or combine them
A common pattern is a fixed-price first version, then one developer by the month for what comes after launch. Defects in the fixed-price work are covered by free bug fixes for 6 months after launch, so the monthly hours go to new features.

How to vet a team in India before you pay, ours included
6 points to check
- Open live work. Ask for URLs, not screenshots, and click through them on your phone. Ours include esmed.org and gpunnao.com (one of 20+ UP Government Polytechnic websites).
- Read reviews on platforms you know, left by clients who paid for the work. Ours: 5.0 from 35 Upwork reviews and 5.0 from 58 Freelancer reviews.
- Ask for a code sample from a similar job, and have one of your engineers read it.
- Meet the developer who will do the work, not only the person selling it, on a short video call at a time you agree.
- Start with a small paid task with a fixed price and a clear finish line before you sign anything monthly.
- Time a real question. Send one before you sign and note how long the answer takes and how specific it is. Our replies come within 2 hours in our working hours (IST).

Stacks our developers work in
These are the stacks we take monthly and project work in. There are no rates in this table: a monthly developer is quoted once the stack and the hours are known.
| Stack | Typical work | Our work in it |
|---|---|---|
| React and Next.js | Web apps, dashboards, marketing sites with a headless CMS | correctprices.com, a retail pricing-audit app; the app itself needs the client's login, so just its home page is public; the Dubai Digital Xchange summit site ran on Next.js with Sanity, but its domain has since moved |
| Node.js | APIs, integrations, background jobs | The correctprices.com app's back end, behind the client's login |
| Flutter and React Native | iOS and Android apps from one codebase | Ask for samples in your brief |
| PHP and Laravel | Portals, back-office tools, custom WordPress features | gpunnao.com, one of the UP polytechnic sites (it now runs on Laravel); esmed.org (WordPress and PHP) |
| Python | Data scripts, automation, AI and API work | Ask for samples in your brief |
| WordPress and WooCommerce | Custom themes and blocks, stores, upkeep | esmed.org; also a WooCommerce pharmacy site for Anand Medico Chemist, since replaced by a different stack, so our build is no longer online |
| Shopify | Themes, app setup, migrations | richakhemka.com, a storefront we worked on; its footer credits Overnight Digital |
| UI/UX in Figma | Screens and clickable prototypes before a build | Ask for samples in your brief |

How we put this page together
Written with AI help on October 25, 2026; Ashish Sharma checks it before it goes live. Every rate on this page is a published third-party figure, read that day on the page linked beside it (Upwork, Arc, Payscale and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics) or dated by its publisher (Wise, October 24, 2025). The rupee salary is converted at the Federal Reserve's H.10 rate for October 16, 2026. No USD developer rate of ours appears on this page; the only USD price of ours on this page is the custom software project band from our USD price list.
